Mission Bhagiratha – Success

Achievements

 Mission Bhagiratha’s goal is to guarantee the supply of PIPED drinking water that is safe and
sustainable.
 All the targeted 23,839 rural habitations were covered with treated water supply. Through
individual solar programs, 136 isolated habitations received access to drinking water. A bulk
supply was also provided to 121 urban local bodies.
 All the targeted 57.01 lakhs rural households in the state were provided with Functional
Household Tap Connections
 In addition to this, all the schools, anganwadi, and all Public institutions were provided with
FHTCs.
 In order to encourage people to drink only piped water rather than going after branded and
packaged drinking water, Telangana government created its own brand ‘Mission Bhagiratha'
which are supplied free of cost to government offices and in public meetings.
 The project also contributed to increase in green cover by 7.8% in which amounts to a total
increase of 33%
 The project also allocates up to 10 per cent of water for industrial use which in turn will
create employment and catalyze economic growth.
Impact
 The mission put a check on water -borne diseases. After the implementation of mission
Bhagiratha there is a decline in cases of Acute Diarrheal Disease ( 8000 cases in 2015 to
1000 cases in 2022), typhoid(6000 cases to 1800 cases) and kidney infections due to
consuming contaminated water. There is a considerable reduction in cases related to vector-
borne diseases such as malaria (6196 cases to 77 cases) and dengue which caused by storing
water for long due to water scarcity.
 The Mission helps reduce tensions in the relationship between people and politics by
increasing public trust in local government’s management of basic needs such as water.
 The project has created new employment opportunities in construction and other sectors, by
helping to meet local employment needs.
 During the rainy season, the availability of piped water ensures the harvest and thus reduces
the losses of small and marginal farmers.
 The availability of piped water in the project saved women and girls as they were responsible
for fetching water from distance water resources in many rural areas. This project relieves
them from physical strain and time consuming process and enabled them to do more
productive and economic activities.
Appreciation
 HUDCO awarded Telangana government thrice for contribution in infrastructure sector.
 The project received 1st prize in National Jal Jeevan Mission – 2019 for increasing efficiency
by 20% and 2 lakhs cash prize.
 The Mission Bhagiratha won Scotch Award in 2018 for developing online monitoring system
and mobile apps developed in-house.
