Operator Training Simulator
Operator Training
▪ Challenges:
– Retirement of experienced operators leave the plant with inexperienced
operators increasing the operational risks as well as deteriorating the
performance of the plant
– Operation of new plants or process units would require training of operators
to perform unfamiliar processes
– Maintain operational best practices

▪ Solution:
– Aspen Operator Training used to develop OTS solutions based on Aspen
HYSYS Dynamics
– Provides the same experience as with control room DCS displays
– Enables connection between dynamic simulation models for different
operating units

▪ Benefits:
– Reduce time and effort required for development of OTS solutions using
same simulation models across the assets lifecycle
– Train operators earlier, Bring plant online faster, Reduce safety incidents &
Maximize production

Operator Training System Applications

Operator Training
• Emergency scenarios training
• Plant Startup training
• Operators' familiarization with the process and the DCS displays

DCS Checkup and Validation

• DCS logic checkout: make sure the DCS logic works correctly before going live with the actual plant
• Emergency Shutdown (ESD) Logic Checkout
• DCS Alarm settings
• DCS Control Loop Tuning
• Check the DCS Displays

Engineering Test Simulators

• Plant Engineers (not familiar with Process Simulators) study aspects of their plant using a rigorous dynamic simulator
• OTS Systems provide a display that emulates the control screens that plant engineers are familiar with

Operational Decision Support:
Compressor Surge Analysis
Operational Decision Support : Compressor Surge Analysis
▪ Challenges:
– Compressor surge can damage expensive equipment and affect the
whole process operation resulting in high temperature, vibration &
flow reversal.
– Hard to determine safe operating conditions for the compressor
based on the operation of the anti-surge controller

▪ Solution:
– Aspen HYSYS Dynamics offers rigorous dynamic simulation of
compressor and adjoining equipment operations including anti-
surge controller enabling
❑ Evaluation of safe operating conditions for the compressor
❑ Analysis of current anti-surge controller strategy & effect of anticipated
operational changes on compressor performance

▪ Benefits:
– New users supply minimal inputs with pre-made templates,
scenarios & results forms
– Empower everyone to use dynamics

Thank You!
How Aspen Operator Training Works?
Components of an Operator Training System
(1) Dynamic process model or models (large models are broken
into sections to improve performance)
(2) OTS executive (or “framework”) manages model execution
and communications between the segregated models and 1 Dynamic Models 4 DCS Emulator
other solution components
(3) DCS Console graphics emulate the control room screens – in
some cases the operator graphics may be the actual
operator screens from the DCS solution provider 2 OTS Executive

(4) DCS emulator(s) – emulate the distributed control system

solutions (may also be actual DCS hardware)
(5) Instructor station – allows the instructor to create & launch
scenarios such as “power failure”, to monitor user sessions,
and may provide some level of “grading” 5 Instructor Station
