TUTARIAL 2
Date of Submission: 2081/03/18

Submission Date: 2081/03/25

One Way Slab

1) Design a simply supported roof slab for a room 7.5m x 3.5m clear size. The slab is carrying an
imposed load of 5 kN/m2 (excluding self-weight) and a live load 3 kN/m2. The materials to be
used are grade M25 concrete and grade Fe415 reinforcement. The slab is outside buildings
which subjected to 1 hr fire resistance and design for 50 years design life. The support wall is
230 mm thick.
2) A simply supported slab of a Hospital building has a clear span 2.5 m and is supported on beams
230 mm width. Design the slab, if the slab is carrying a live load of 5 kN/m2. Use M20 concrete
and HYSD Fe 415 steel.
3) Design a RCC slab for a room having inside dimensions 3 x 7 m. the thickness of supporting wall
is 300 mm. the slab carries 70 mm thick lime concrete at its top, the unit weight of which may
be taken as 20kN/m3. The live load on the slab may be taken as 2 kN/m2. Assume the slab to be
simply supported at the ends. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
4) Design a simply supported slab supported on masonry wall with following details, Clear span 4
m, live load 3000 N/m2, Assume modification factor 1.4, assume permissible nominal shear
stress 0.3 N/ mm2.
5) Design a cantilever slab for an overhang of 1.2 m. The imposed load on slab consists of 1 kN/m2
of live load and weight of finishing is 800 N/m2. Use fck= 20N/mm2, fy= 415 N/mm2.
Continuous Slab

6) Design a reinforced concrete slab for a hall measuring 8 x 16 m. The slab is supported on RCC
beam 250 mm wide and spaced at 4.0 m c/c. The superimposed load is 4 kN/m2. Use M20 and
Fe415. Bearing of beams is 200 mm.
7) Design a continuous RCC slab for a Campus Assembly hall 6.5 m wide and 13.5 m long. The slab
is supported on RCC beams each 240 mm wide which are monolithic and spaced 3.375 m c/c.
The end of the slab supported on 300 mm wide wall. The hall floors are finished by cement sand
40mm thick screeding and at top 20 mm thick marble. The chair and tables were not fixed, hall is
used for multipurpose. Use M20 and Fe415 steel.

8) Design a RCC slab for a bed room of clear dimensions 4x 5 m. The slab is supported on walls of
width 300 mm. The floor finished is 40 mm thick c/s screeding and 20 mm thick wooden plank.
M20 concrete and Fe 415 steels are used. The corners of slab are held down.
9) Design a two way slab for a room 5.5 x 4.0 m clear in size if the superimposed load is 5kN/m 2.
Use M20 and Fe415 steel.
a. Edges simply supported – corners not held down
b. Edges simply support - corners held down.
10) Design a two adjacent sides (edges) discontinuous reinforced concrete slab for room having
clear dimensions of 3.5m x 4.5m. The slab rest on 250 mm wide beam. Consider 25 mm thick
PCC floor finish and Live load on slab as 4.0 kN/m2 and partition wall load on slab as 1.0 kN/m2.
Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Check also the safe in shear deflection or not? Show the
reinforcement and arrangement in plan and section.
11) A rectangular slab panel 5m x 4m (Clear Span) is continuous over three edges and discontinuous
over one short edge. The slab is rest on 250 mm wide beam. Design the slab and check whether
the provided section satisfies the deflection criteria. Also, sketch the arrangement of
reinforcement bars at the support and at the mid-span with torsional bars.
