(a) 2 (b) 2 (c) 2 (d) 2

3. The focal length of a convex lens of refractive index 1.5 is f when it is placed in air. When
it is immersed in a liquid it behaves as a converging lens its focal length becomes xf (x < 1).

4. The angle of a prism is 30◦ . The rays incident at 60◦ on one refracting face suffer a deviation

(a) 0◦ (b) 30◦ (c) 60◦ (d) 90◦
5. A liquid of refractive index 1.33 is placed between two identical plano-convex lenses, with
refractive index 1.50. Two possible arrangements P and Q are shown. The system is

(a) divergent in P , convergent in Q (b) convergent in P , divergent in Q

(c) convergent in both (d) divergent in both

6. A converging lens of focal length 20 cm and diameter 5 mm is cut along the line AB. The part
of the lens shown shaded in the diagram is now used to form an image of a point P placed 30
cm away from it on the line XY . Which is perpendicular to the plane of the lens. The image
of P will be formed

(a) 0.5 mm above XY (b) 1 mm below XY

(c) on XY (d) 1.5 mm below XY
7. There is an equilateral prism of refractive index 3 on which a light ray is incident normally on
one face as shown in the figure. Find the length of the path travelled by the light ray inside
the prism.

√ √
(a) 23 L (b) 3L
(c) 3L/2 (d) L
8. When an object at a distance u1 and u2 from the optical centre of a convex lens, a real and
virtual image are formed respectively, with the same magnification. The focal length of the
lens is
u2 u1 +u2 u1 −u2
(a) (u1 + u2 ) (b) u1 + 2 (c) 2 (d) 2

Medium-Level Questions

1. Two blocks each of mass m lie on a smooth table. They are attached to two other masses
as shown in the figure. The pulleys and strings are light. An object O is kept at rest on the
table. The sides AB and CD of the two blocks are made reflecting. The acceleration of the
two images formed in those two reflecting surfaces w.r.t. each other is:
(a) 5g/6 (b) 5g/3 (c) g/3 (d) 17g/6

2. A bird is flying up at angle sin−1 (3/5) with the horizontal. A fish in a pond looks at that bird
when it is vertically above the fish. The angle at which the bird appears to fly (to the fish) is
[nwater = 4/3]
(a) sin−1 (3/5) (b) sin−1 (4/5) (c) 45◦ (d) sin−1 (9/16)

3. In the figure shown a point object O is placed in air. A spherical boundary separates two
media. AB is a principal axis. The refractive index above AB is 1.6 and below AB is 2.0. The
separation between the images formed due to refraction at a spherical surface is:

(a) 12 m (b) 21 m (c) 14 m (d) 10 m

4. A convex lens of focal length f and a plane mirror are y distance apart. An object O is kept
on the principal axis of the lens at a distance x from the lens. The values of x and y for the
final image of O to fall exactly (position and size) on the object ’O’:

5. The given lens is broken into four parts and rearranged as shown in the figure. If the initial
focal length is f then after rearrangement the equivalent focal length is

f f

Hard Questions

1. Show that the maximum magnification achievable with a magnifying glass of focal length f is
1 + D/f , where D is the least distance of distinct vision.

2. The distance between an object and its real image, formed by a converging lens, is held fixed.
Show that there are two possible positions for the lens, and that the size of the object is given
by (h1 h2 )1/2 where h1 and h2 are the sizes of the two images.

3. Remote objects are viewed through a converging lens with a focal length F = 9 cm placed at
a distance a = 36 cm in front of the eye.
Estimate the minimum size of the screen that should be placed behind the lens so that the
entire field of view is covered. Where should the screen be placed? Assume that the radius r
of the pupil is approximately 1.5 mm.

4. A cylindrical transparent vessel of height h (h << Rves ), where Rves is the radius of the
vessel, is filled with an ideal gas of molar mass µ at a temperature T and a pressure p0 . The
dependence of the refractive index n of the gas on its density ρ obeys the law n = 1 + αρ. The
vessel is rotated at an angular velocity ω about its axis. A narrow parallel beam of light of
radius rbeam is incident on the axis of the vessel.
Determine the radius R of the spot on the screen placed at right angles to the vessel axis at
a distance L behind the vessel, assuming that the change in gas pressure at each point of the
vessel due to rotation is small as compared with p0 . The effect of the end faces of the vessel
on the path of the rays should be neglected.
