1-Introduction

Literary essays are litearry texts which include short


story,memoir,travelogue,periodical,personal,formal,autobiography and
criticism essays.However,expository,descriptive,narrative and persuasive
essays are the types of essays.Functions,characteristics,and elements of essays
will also highlighted.

2-Body

2-1-Definition of key terms

*Literary

It refers to literature. Means concerned with or connected with the


writting,study,or appreciation of literature.

*Essay

The term ‘’Essay’’ derived from a French word essayer,which means to


attemtp,or to try. An essay is a short form of literary composition based on a
single subject matter,and often gives personal opinion of an author. Oxford
Dictionary describes it as ‘’a short piece of writting on a particular subject’’. In
simple words,we can define it as a scholarly work in writing that provides the
author‘s personal argument.

*Literary Essay
Literary essay is a piece of writing in which the author identifies a theme,or big
idea,from a text by generating a thesis statement.

2-2-Types of Essays

There are two forms of essays ;literary and non-literary.

a.Literary essays

Literary essays are of four types :

*Expository essay

In an expository essay,the writers give explanation of an idea ,theme or issue


to the audience by giving their personal opinions . This essay is presented
through examples,definitions,comparison,and contrast.

*Descriptive essay

As it sounds like,it gives description about a particular topic or describes the


traits and characteristics of something or a person in details. It allows artistic
freedom and creates images in minds of readers through the use of five
senses.

*Narrative essay

Narrative essay is non-fiction,but describes a story with sensory descriptions.


The writers not only tell story,but also make a point by giving reasons.

*Persuasive essay

In this type of essay ,a writer tries to convince his readers to adopt his position
on a point of view or issue after he provides them solid reasoning in this
connection. It requires a lot of research to claim and defend an idea. It is also
called an argumentative essay.

b.Non-literary essays

Non-literary essays could also be of the same types but they could be written
in any format.

*Expositoy : Is just to inform or explain.


*Technical : to instruct or explain a proces.

*Persuasive : to convince or call to action.Non-literary essays are more


concerned with information,facts and reality to dociment issues or to explain
or analyze something or event argue for certain viewpoint.

2-3-Functions of literary and non-literary essays

a.Functions of literary essay

The following are functions of literary essay :entertainment,cultural


purposes,education and criticism of social ills.

*Entertainment

Literary essays get the readers entertained when reading them.

*Cultural purposes

Literary essays express the culture of people of a given society. These cultures
may be traditions,beliefs,norms,or customs

*Education

Through literary essays,knowledge can be transmitted to the members of the


society.They educate the youth on what is good to do and what is bad to leave.

*Criticism of social ills

Through writing,one can easily criticize the society to point out the challenges
and suggests to the society solutions for solving them

b.Functions of non-literary essays

Literary essays’function is to inform,instruct,order and create entertaintment

a.Characteristics of literary essay

Literary essay should be :

*Short as monograph
*Subjective and personal,means based on the rigor of the authenticity of the
information

*Allow to publicitize a wide variety of topics(politics,ethics,society)

*Aime at a general and broad audience.

*Present a free structure(in general it maintains the introduction at the


beginning and a closing at the end)

*Personal and rigor : The author of an essay is characterized by writing a


subjective text in which he or she reveals his or her interpretation of a specific
topic that has been priviously studied and analysed. A subject is exposed and
presented under critical eye of the author,soi t is usually objective

b.Characteristics of non-literary essay

Non-literary essay are as follows :

-Engaging visual images,short and direct sentences,and a call to action,which


involves asking to the audience to act

2-5-Elements of literary essay

The elements of literary essay are

*Plot :is just what happens in the story

*Setting : is where the action takes place

*Characters :representation of a person in a work fiction

*point of view :the author’s ideas or thoughts

*Figurative language :language used to describe something in the story

*Style :is the way story is told

3-Conclusion

Literary essay is counted as one of the major genres in literature. It is found


alongside dramaturgy,narrative and poetry,with a more didactic nuance. It is a
short text written in prose where the author examines,analyzes or interprets a
topic in a subjective but documented way. Its purpose is to argue about a
specific topic.
