CHAPTER ONE

1.0 SIWES – STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE MALLAM AMINU KANO INTERNATIONAL

AIRPORT

Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is an international airport serving Kano, the capital

city of Kano state of Nigeria. It was a Royal Air force station before the country became

independent. It is the main airport serving Northern Nigeria and was named after the 20 th century

politician Aminu Kano. The airport has an international and a domestic terminal and was

commissioned on 23rd May, 2011. In 2009 the airport handled 323,482 passengers. The bulk of

Mecca.

1.2 HISTORY OF SIWES

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was initiated in 1973 by the

Industrial Training Fund (ITF). This was in response to the mandate given to the ITF through

Decree 47 of 1971, charging it with the responsibility of promoting and encouraging the

acquisition of skills in industry and commerce with a view to generating a pool of trained

indigenous manpower sufficient to meet the needs of the economy.

SIWES has come to be recognized as the major avenue of bridging the gap between theory

acquired by students of tertiary institutions and the industrial practice of the various professions

and disciplines essential to the technological and economic development of Nigeria. Since its
1
introduction by the ITF in 1973, the scheme has gone through serious reforms and restructuring.

For instance, its management has changed hands from the ITF to the various regulatory agencies,

National University Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and

National Commission for College of Education (NCCE) and back to ITF. Similarly, the structure

and operational framework have been reviewed and streamlined to make it more functional at the

various levels of operations.

1.3 AIM OF SIWES

 To expose students to machines and equipment, professional work methods and ways of

safe-guarding the work area and workers in industry and other Organization.

1.4 OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

• Provide an avenue for student in the Nigerian University to acquire industrial skills and

experience in their course of study.

• Prepare students for industrial work situation they are likely to meet after graduation

• Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery

that may not be available in the university Make the transition from the university to the

world of work easier and thus enhance student contacts for later job placement.

• Provide students with opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work

situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.

• Enlist and strengthen employer involvement in the entire educational process of preparing

University graduates for employment in the industry.

At the aeronautical information service department I learnt so much about an aerodrum with my

Few listed experience.

3) I was also thought how to receive flight plan whenever any information wants to be passed

through each receiving tower & department,

international flight or local flight.

5) Also how to document all data on a Hard copy form and also in the (ATFN) the AIS

5
CHAPTER FIVE

5.1 CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

The main problem I encountered was transportation, it was quite challenging for me that live in a

far place to get me to the establishment (Kano Airport).

5.2 CONCLUSION

My three-four month at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport Kano has been one of the

interesting, productive, and instructive and educative experience to me through the training &

gained insight and more comprehensive understanding about the Kano International Airport

working condition and has greatly improved my interpersonal skill. As a result of the programme

I am now confident to build my future career which, have already started developing in my day

to day activities as geographer.

My recommendation is that the department of geography at the Federal University Dustin-Ma
