What is Grooming?
Grooming is, according to Cambridge Dictionary, the things that you do to
make your appearance clean and neat, for example brushing your hair or
dressing up in neat clothes. Grooming is an on-going practice, which can only
be perfected over a lifetime. It aids you in engaging your guests, understanding
what they want and involving with them better to make their stay comfortable
and unforgettable.

Grooming is the combination of style and discipline. It is to project an image of


organization’s culture and ethics to our esteemed costumers which is our guests.
It also enhances the personality of an employee, character of an organization
and value of the company.

Importance of Grooming in the Hospitality Industry


While grooming requirements will vary between men and women, it is
important that both look clean and presentable while they are on the clock.
Make sure all your employees know the dress code, and provide them with a
clear outline of what is expected. Give guidelines for both men and women that
dictate appropriate hairstyles, accessories and shoes. You may even get as
detailed as outlining nail polish colors, the appropriate amount of make-up for
women or asking employees to wear deodorant.
Power dressing has been known to attract more attention towards oneself and
that’s exactly what the organization you’re working for needs.
Points that the hotel focuses on about their employees:
Attire: Generally, most organizations have a dress code or a uniform. This
depends a lot on the brand image they want to give their customers. Think about
the difference between employees at a fast food restaurant and those at a
reputed hotel chain like Taj. There needs to be consistency in dress
code/uniform and the message the brand wants to convey.
Hair: There’s nothing hair-raising about the fact that hair needs to be trimmed
and well-kept. For men, a clean-shaven look or a neatly trimmed beard is
acceptable. If they have long hair, it should be tied back neatly. Women also
need to ensure their hair is well-groomed and tied. Norms vary across
organizations, so it’s a good idea to be aware of the standards.
Accessories and Tattoos: Accessories should fall in line with an organization’s
dress code, and the general rule is that flashy stuff is out. Tattoos should be
discreet. Accessories and tattoos carry marks of a person’s individuality. No one
is saying that you should compromise on your identity, but it’s important to
express it in a socially acceptable manner.

So, the hotel shouldn’t only focus on maintaining the property but the
employees as well. The employees also must bring their best foot forward and
present themselves in a neat and well groomed manner.
