Casing Collar Locator Chapter 1. Description
1 DESCRIPTION
The Sondex CCL (Casing Collar Locator) is a magnetic device that detects changes in metal
volume such as at tubing collars and perforations. The CCL028 operates as part of a toolstring,
deriving power and control from a suitable system controller (e.g. UMT). The line conductor passes
through the tool from the upper to lower heads.
As the tool passes a collar, or similar change in metal volume, the lines of metal flux between the
two opposing permanent magnets are disturbed. The disturbance induces a low frequency voltage,
or EMF, in a coil mounted between the magnets. The resulting signal is amplified and compensated
for line speed, in order to maintain a high signal gain in all circumstances. The signal is then con-
verted by a voltage-controlled oscillator for recording in the UltraWireTM section of the tool.

2 SAFETY
2.1 GENERAL
The intent is to operate and service the tool without personal injury or damage to the tool. Please
work safely, in accordance with local directives.
In addition to heeding those cautions which may be contained within other sections of this manual,
pay particular attention to the Chapter 2 cautions which follow.
2.6 MAGNETS
The magnets are relatively fragile and can be cracked by small mechanical shocks. Care must be
taken not to drop them. They must be carefully wiped free of any swarf before re-assembly. This is
easily accomplished with a steel brush.
Do not store CCL with PGR or PGC tools. Keep at least 1 foot apart. Magnetic field

may magnetise pressure housing and seriously reduce sensitivity.

The magnets exert enough force to come together forcefully, causing injury (for

3.2 DESCRIPTION
The tool detector is comprised of a coil mounted between two opposing permanent magnets as
illustrated in Figure 3.1 CCL028 Block Diagram.
The fields of two opposing permanent magnets pass through a coil positioned between them. It is
the movement of the lines of flux through the coil as they are altered by the variation in steel volume
and position alongside the tool that produce a change in EMF across the coil output. The output
from this coil is the conventional low frequency CCL signal which is sent to surface in wireline tools.
This axial arrangement of 2 magnets minimises the unwanted signal from sideways motion in the
well.
3.3 ELECTRONICS
The low frequency CCL signal is amplified and filtered before modulating a voltage controller oscil-
lator, which has a typical centre frequency of 19 kHz. This frequency is stored in the FPGA logic
and is read out over the UltraWireTM toolbus in response to requests from the telemetry controller
(i.e., UMT) or other crossover.

4 OPERATING PROCEDURE
4.1.1 MECHANICAL

1. Ensure that upper and lower electrical connectors are clean, dry and undamaged.
4.1.3 OPERATING
Note: UltrawireTM tools must be connected to a toolstring controller (i.e., UMT or XTU) and data acquisi-
tion system (i.e., MEMLog, MIDAS) in order to function.
Move a magnetic material such as a steel screwdriver past the measure point. A positive and nega-
tive variation (±100Hz typical) from the centre frequency should be observed. Faster and closer
movement causes a larger signal.
Note: MEMLOG and MIDAS have optional normalisation filters to subtract any drift of the CCL015's
centre frequency.
Note: The CCL tool is meant to run at the top of the toolstring.

• Slower logging speeds will reduce the magnitude of the CCL signal.
2. Ensure the well fluid does not reach the electrical connectors.
Always store and transport in the case provided with the thread protectors fitted.
Note: • Store the CCL at least one foot away from FDR or PGR tools containing photomultiplier tubes.
Magnetism can impair photomultiplier tube functionality.
• Do not store CCL tools along side each other; magnet strength may be reduced.
• Do not subject the CCL to extreme shock (i.e., dropping, hard blows).

5 MECHANICAL
This Chapter instructs on disassembly and reassembly of the CCL.The intent is to assemble and
disassemble the tool without personal injury or damage to the tool. Review Chapter 2: Safety.
5.1 DESCRIPTION
The bottom sub assembly (Item 5) threads into the base of the housing (Item 1), which encases the
sub’s detector and electronics. The sub terminates at the tool bottom in a socket connection. The
top sub assembly (Item 6) threads into the opposite end of the housing, forming a female connec-
tion at the top of the tool.

The brass shafts are threaded at both ends. Each threads into other assembly components,
thereby forming a linear join between the bottom sub go, the coil core, and the bottom block. The
bottom block and top block are secured to parallel PCB rail supports with screws.
2. Unthread and remove the top sub from the housing. Discard the sub seals and o-rings, if flawed.
Should the sub connector need replacement, refer to Section 5.4.2 Assemble the Top Sub,
reversing the order of operations to access the components.
3. Unthread the housing from the bottom sub. Discard the sub seals and o-rings, if flawed.
4. Refer to Prepare the Top Block to disconnect the top block from the rails. If the wiring of the line
connector needs replacement, refer to Prepare the Top Line Connector.
5. Note that teardown of the magnet and coil detector assembly is not recommended.To replace a
magnet or coil, complete Steps 1 through 3 of Section 5.3 Disassembly Electronics. Refer to
Section 5.4.5 Assemble the Detector, reversing the order of operations to access the compo-
nents.

To check the circuit-board-to-detector wiring, test the CCL circuit board, or to swap out the board,
perform Steps 1 through 4 of Disassembly Mechanical and refer to Install the CCL Circuit Board.
• These instructions are provided for the sole and express purpose of optimizing tool function. All
procedures are to be carried out by qualified personnel in a properly equipped environment.
Employ static handling procedures when working with circuit boards.
• Practice good soldering technique. Use high temperature/high pressure solder, otherwise the
solder will melt under normal operating conditions! It is imperative that all flux be removed com-
pletely. Flux has resistive qualities which can influence electrical functionality. Always tin
stripped ends. Always apply HT/HP compatible heat shrink over joins.
• Coat the threads of the shafts and/or screws with 242 Loctite®®, unless otherwise stated.
• Lubricate o-rings, seals, GO threads and cavities as instructed in Section 7.1.1 Lubricant.

2. Thread one end of the brass rod into a banana pin (Item 5).
3. Thread the opposite end of the rod into an SX brass feedthru (Item 3).
6. Lubricate the exterior of the feedthru and the interior of the insulator.
7. Insert the brass feedthru in the insulator, male pin facing toward the top of the insulator.

1. If the wire-to-spring feedthru (Item 4) has not been wired, refer to Section 5.5.1 Prepare the Wir-
ing and wire the feedthru.
3. Lubricate and install an o-ring (Item 6) on the go pin seal insulator (Item 3).
4. Install the feedthru into one end of the compression spring (Item 2).
5. Install the brass socket (Item 7) into the opposite end of the compression spring.
6. Feed the wire coming off the feedthru through the insulator (Item 3).
7. Lubricate the feedthru over the o-ring and seat the feedthru in the insulator.
1. Feed the red wire through the bottom sub (Item 3).
2. Seat the bottom connector (see Section 5.4.3 Build the Bottom Connector) - socket facing out -
in the neck of the bottom sub.
3. Use a 3/16” hex nut screwdriver to press down on the washer and compress the spring.
4. Insert the retaining ring (Item 9, Drawing9-4-03-SBTMSXC1) and work the ring into position with
an o-ring pick.
COMPRESSED SPRING!
Warning! This tool contains a compressed spring, which has the potential to cause injury if
proper precautions are not taken during servicing (i.e., safety glasses and steel-toe
footwear).
5. Lubricate and install the o-rings (Item 4) and seals (Item 1 & 2) on the sub.
1. Apply 242 Loctite® to the threads at one end of a magnet shaft (Item 7).
2. Feed the red wire through the shaft and thread the shaft into the bottom sub.
3. Feed the wire through a spacer (Item 8) and seat the spacer against the sub.

4. CAREFULLY determine and note the polarity of the magnets. The magnets MUST be installed
with like polarity facing towards the coil. CAUTION!
MAGNETIC FORCE!
Warning! The magnets exert enough force to come together forcefully, causing injury (for
example, to fingers). Take proper precautions.
5. Feed the red wire through the first magnet (Item 9) and install the magnet while holding the red
wire taut. CAUTION! The magnet can attract and trap/shear the wire, if proper care is not exerted.
7. Orient the coil (Item 6) with the wires coming off the coil facing away from the bottom sub and
feed the red wire through the coil. Thread the coil onto the shaft.
8. Apply 242 Loctite® to the threads at one end of the second shaft.
9. Feed all the wires through the shaft and thread the shaft into the coil.
10. Orient the second magnet with like polarity facing toward the coil. Feed the wires
through the magnet, hold the wires taut and install the magnet.
11. Feed the wires through the second spacer and install the spacer.
12. Apply 242 Loctite® to the threads of the shaft and thread the bottom block (Item 10) onto the
shaft, flat face oriented toward the spacer.

1. Refer to Section 5.5.1 Prepare the Wiring and prepare the wires.
3. Seat the ground button (Item 2), spring (Item 3), and button cover plate (Item 4) in the top line
connector (Item 1).
4. Hold the plate down, seat the ground wire and install installing the screws, as illustrated in the ref-
erence drawing.
5. Sparingly apply 242 Loctite® to the banana jack threads (Item 6).
ELECTRICAL CONTACT!
Warning! Apply Loctite® sparingly. Excessive amounts of Loctite® will insulate the contact of
electrical connections and impede functionality.
8. Add the second washer, slip the terminal ring (Item 8) attached to the 24” red wire over the jack,
and secure with the nut.
Note: Install washers with shoulders facing the top line connector.

9. Tighten the install with a 3/8” Hex Nut Driver and pliers.
1. Insert the ground bolt (Item 15) into the top block (Item 14) and feed the wires coming off the top
line connector through the ground bolt.
2. Loctite® the threads of the ground bolt and secure the top line connector to the top block with the
ground bolt.
3. Install one rail (Item 11) with screws (Item 12), joining the top block and dector sections.
Note: Do NOT use Loctite® on the screws. The board must be removable.
2. Seat the CCL circuit boards (Items 16 & 17) in the grooves of the bottom blocks (Items 10 & 14).
1. Lubricate the interior threads of the housing (Item 1) and the exterior seals of the assembled bot-
tom sub.
2. Fit the housing over the tool and thread onto the bottom sub. Wrench tight.
5. Lubricate and install an o-ring (Item 4) in the o-ring grooves of the male plug (Item 3).
6. Lubricate the threads of the male plug and thread into the top sub.
1. Cut three lengths of 24AWG wire: 14” and 5” lengths of red wire, one 5” length of black wire.
2. Solder a terminal ring (Item 9, 9-4-03-00TLC001) to one end of the black wire, and install a
socket at the opposite end of the wire.

3. Solder a terminal ring (Item 8, 9-4-03-00TLC001) to one end of the 5” length of red wire, and
install a socket at the opposite end of the wire.
4. Solder a GO pin feedthru (Item 4, 9-4-03-SBTMSXC1) to the 14” red wire, and install a socket at
the opposite end of the wire.
5. Trim the black and green wires coming off the coil (Item 6, 9-4-03-252BMR01 1/2) to 8” in length
and install sockets on the wires.

6 ELECTRICAL DESCRIPTION
The CCL028 operates with UltrawireTM telemetry protocol. UltrawireTM telemetry is modulated onto
the line as 1V AMI (Alternate Mark Inversion) at 500 kbaud., as illustrated below:

UltrawireTM words are 20 bits long. The first bit and the last two bits are for synchronisation. The
first bit is always '1'. The intervening 16 bits are tool data.
The UltrawireTM telemetry is a master-slave protocol. The controller, which is always the master,
sends a command to the tool. The command may be a global command directed to all the tools, or
a tool-specific command directed to one tool via the tool’s address. Tool-specific commands are
acknowledged by the tool(s); global commands are executed, but not acknowledged.
The potential exists for commands to be sent to the CCL at a rate exceeding the tool’s capacity to
acquire measurements. The UltrawireTM TimeStamp feature accounts for this possibility. The
general sequence of events is as follows:
1. The controller issues a global TimeStamp command to all the tools in the toolstring. This effec-
tively tells the tools the current time.

2. The controller issues a global SampleNow command, triggering the CCL transmitter to fire and
the receivers to capture the resulting sonic receipts.
3. The controller polls each of the tools on the string with a tool-specific SendData command.
4. If the CCL has data on receipt of SendData, it sends back a data packet containing the TimeS-
tamp associated with the SampleNow that initiated the measurement. Due to the large amount
of data generated by the CCL sensors, each complete frame of data is sent back in multiple pack-
ets. Typically, a complete frame of data for an 8-channel radial contains seven packets of 43
words. One packet is sent for each SendData command.
5. If the CCL has not acquired data on receipt of the SendData command, it returns a DataN-
otReady reply.
U5 provides a stable 5.00V reference which is amplified to provide 10V power for the amplifier/filter
(U1), 6V analogue ground and 9V power for the 555 oscillator U2.
CCL coil is capacitively coupled to the CCL board. refer to the WD 2523501 for details.
Amplifier U1b has a gain of around 20 set by R1 (on the WD 2523501, 2.5kΩ) and R1, R2 and R3
(on PCB 80062). R3 reduces the effect of temperature drift on the coil.
Low pass filter, U1a, compensates for line speed by attenuating the larger CCL coil signals obtained
by fast magnetic field variation.
U2 is configured as an oscillator, usually set to a nominal 19 kHz. The CCL signal modulates the
'Control Voltage' pin, therefore the 19 kHz carrier frequency is modulated.

7 EXTENDED CHECKS
This Chapter outlines diagnostic checks for the CCL and provides help in resolving problems.
Detailed information is provided with particular emphasis on troubleshooting the electronics.
These instructions are provided for the sole and express purpose of testing
Warning! tool function. Sondex CSS cautions that all testing procedures are to be car-
ried out by qualified personnel in a properly equipped environment. Employ
static handling procedures when accessing the circuit boards.
7.1.1 LUBRICANT
The judicious use of greases and lubricants is essential to the maintenance of all Sondex Group
downhole equipment. Sondex recommends o-rings, T-seals, TeflonTM rings, and threads be lubri-
cated with Liquid O-ring® 101, or equivalent. Criteria in selection must include high temperature and
high pressure performance.
• using copper-loaded greases, as some types may induce electrical leaks, and
• using lubricants which degrade the seals (for example, Viton® fluoroelastomer o-rings).
Greases which contain volatiles may induce electrical failure; in high temperature/
Warning! high pressure conditions the volatiles may vaporize, inducing a corrosive environ-
ment within the tool.
7.1.2 MECHANICAL
4. Check for loose or missing fasteners (i.e., screws, nuts, bolts). Repair or replace, as required.
5. Check connectors for cleanliness and loose/bent pins. Repair or replace, as required.
7.1.3 ELECTRICAL

4. Connect the tool to a logging system and check the signal as described in 4, Operating Proce-
dure. Check for correct data. Apply some gentle vibration, rotation and invert the tool to expose
potential failure.
5. With an oscilloscope, check line for +1V and -1V, 2μS pulses. Make sure to check tool pulses
not those from the controller which occur first (See Figure 6.1).
6. Pulses should have no ringing, if ringing is observed, attach a bottom tool (CTF, other bottom
flowmeter, or toolstring terminator).
Electronics aging failures can occur with prolonged tool deployment at high temperatures. Expect
failures after 4000 hours at 150οC. Each 10οC temperature increase halves tool life expectancy.
Vibration and/or corrosive gas inside the chassis accelerate the process. A visual inspection and
review of the logging history is recommended, but may not predict premature failure.
Test a tool, if age or log response warrants. Heat the tool to 120οC. Then vibrate the tool via a mod-
erate blow with a wooden hammer. DO NOT USE A METAL HAMMER!
Sondex does not generally recommend heat testing at temperatures above 150οC, because it
shortens tool life expectancy. If needs be, test at a temperature slightly above the expected well
temperature and do not keep at temperature for more than 1 hour.

7.2 TROUBLESHOOTING
Check for:
Initial inspection
• Damaged wires.
• Damaged components.
• Electrical components shorting to the chassis.
• Heat or chemical damage (i.e., discoloured components).
• Incorrect thread grease or excessive quantity, see Section 7.1.1.
• Tight fittings.
Excessive Disconnect wires to isolate fault to:
current • Upper head isolation assembly.
• CCL Coil (see Faulty CCL coil below).
• Line wire through lower pressure feedthrough and connector.
• PCB 82269.
• PCB 80062 (coil disconnected).
Upper Head, line wire and lower connector may be tested to 250V
relative to chassis to check for electrical leak. Line connection to 82269
circuit must be disconnected. Resistance should exceed 100MΩ.
Upper head, line wire and lower pressure feedthrough and connector
may be disassembled to locate fault.
Isolate high current to either PCB 82269 or PCB 80062. Fault find or
replace PCB.
Little or No On PCB 82269 check LINE = 18V, V+ = 12V and Vc = 5V and 0V wire
current connects to chassis. Fault find or replace PCB.
No Telemetry On PCB 82269 check LINE = 18V, V+ = 12V and Vc = 5V and 0V wire
Counts connects to chassis. Fault find or replace PCB.
Check line for +1V and -1V, 2μS pulses from the controller and similar
pulses from the tool.
If no tool response words on the Line, fault find or replace PCB 82269.
Faulty CCL coil Disconnect coil from circuit and check:
• resistance 5-6 kΩ
Small signal Weak magnets: re-magnetise or replace.
Magnets not fitted with poles opposing: check orientation.
