Region 9

ZAMBOANGA PENINSULA

 officially designated as Region IX, is an administrative region in the Philippines


occupying the western section of Mindanao and lies between Moro Gulf and Sulu Sea

 came from the Malay word “sambangan” meaning “a place where wild flowers grow”

 the regional center is the City of Pagadian

 home to ZAMBOECOZONE, the only economic zone and freeport in all Visayas and
Mindanao

 the No. 1 marine fish producing region in the country making it the “Sardines Capital of
the Philippines”

 3 Provinces ( Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay) and 5
Cities (Isabela, Zamboanga City, Dipolog, Dapitan, Pagadian)

FARMING SYSTEM

 Crop Production - they grow different crops such as rice, corn, coconut, which is
widely grown in regon 9, rubber, mango, and other fruits to supply the region’s need

 Livestock and poultry - Hog raising was the top livestock activity in all provinces of
Region 9, and raising chicken was the primary poultry raising activity

 Fisheries and aquaculture - Zamboanga Peninsula has rich fishing grounds and a
significant number of fishponds. They also do Eucheuma farming as an important
livelihood.

MAJOR COMMODITIES

coconut, mango, seaweed, sardine

 Zamboanga del Norte - coconut, mango, seaweed

 Zamboanga del Sur - coconut, fisheries, livestock

 Zamboanga Sibugay - rubber, coconut, rice

 Isabela - coocnut, rubber, commercial crops


 Zamboanga City - fish, seaweed, processed food

AGRO-SECTOR CONSTRAINTS

 Climate - The increasing frequency of extreme weather events like droughts,


floods, and typhoons, destroying crops and disrupts agricultural activities.

 Seaweed resource depletion - constant gathering/harvesting and no proper


conservation and propagation, results to the depletion of their seaweed
resources.

 Soil degradation - overuse of land, deforestation, and improper soil management


practices leads to decreased soil fertility and lower crop yields.
