Women's Soccer

Do you think that soccer is a sport for men only? Well, you may be surprised that the first women's
soccer match took place back in 1895 ... and the first international match (between an English and a
French team) was in 1920. However, just a year later the Football Association (FA) in England
banned women from playing soccer. That's why for many years, soccer was a game for men only.
Things started to change in the 1960s, when the position of women in society became more equal.
Increasing numbers of women took up the sport. The Women's Football Association was formed in
1969 in the U.K. In 1971 the English FA permitted women to play once again. Many other countries
started their own women's leagues.

These days things are changing quickly. More women are playing the game than ever before. In
fact, soccer is the most popular female team sport in the world today. FIFA estimates that there are
around 26 million girls and women playing soccer around the world ... that's 10% of all the players
in the world. One in every five new players is female. Most of the growth has happened since 2000.
More people, both men and women, are enjoying women's soccer as spectators.

There are hundreds of international matches every year. Every four years, national teams compete
against each other in the UEFA European Women's Championship. There is also a Women's World
Cup, which started in 1991. The winners then were the U.S. However, in international competitions
Germany is often the strongest team.

Women's soccer is also becoming more professional. In 2009 the Women's Professional Soccer
(WPS) league began in the U.S. Japan and Italy also have professional leagues. It seems that women
are successfully overcoming cultural barriers and enjoying the sport of soccer. (300 words)
