1.0 SCOPE
This procedure details the general method for Grit blasting and painting of external
surfaces of Above Ground steel works for the Project “Support Services for Gas
Gathering project”
KOC-Spec. No. KOC-P-001 for painting and coating of metal surface – New
Construction.
BS 381C- Specification for Color for Identification, Coding and Special Purposes.
Prior to Grit/Garnet blasting, all rough welds, weld spatter and other sharp projection
etc., shall be ground smooth and clearance shall be obtained by all concerned parties.
All oil, grease or any other impurities on the blasting surface shall be removed by using
an approved material or other suitable means prior to Grit blasting.
Any Corroded material found after surface preparation shall be replaced with new.

4.1 The grit /Garnet shall be dry, salt free, graded and with neutral PH value.
4.3 Grit/Garnet shall be hard and small and shall have a breakdown rate of less
than 10% and shall give 1-3 mils anchor pattern.
4.4 Grit /Garnet shall be kept dry at all times and covered by night.
4.5. All painting/coating materials such as the primers, thinners, paints etc., shall be
as per Client’s specification and from one manufacturer.
4.7 The use of materials not as per the client’s Specification or which have
deteriorated is strictly forbidden and such materials shall be removed from site
immediately upon being notified by the Inspection.
4.8 Sample of proposed primers, paints etc. shall be submitted for inspection and
approval from time to time as required during the progress of work.
4.9 Stock of paint’s primers and thinners shall be rotated regularly to ensure that
only “fresh” materials are issued for use.
4.10 The abrasive materials and paint the Manufacturer’s Specifications shall be
submitted for approval by Joint Operations prior to commencement of Painting
activities.
Grit/Garnet blasting or painting shall not be carried out when the relative humidity is 85%
or higher (or at any lower relative humidity stipulated by the paint manufacturer) unless
specifically approved in writing by the Inspection / Client.
Grit/Garnet blasting or painting shall not be carried out when the wind velocity is 30
knots or higher.
Grit /Garnet blasting or painting shall not be carried out during dusty/ rain or fog weather.
Painting / Coating shall not be undertaken when the atmospheric and surface temperature
of the steelwork to be coated is 50° or 3° C above dew point or when ambient temp.
below 5° C and specified by the manufacturer.
All surfaces specified shall be blasted to Swedish Standard SA 2½. using Grit /Garnet
under nozzle pressure of 100 PSI. The blasting medium shall satisfy the quality levels
required.
a) All blasting pots and compressors shall be fitted with efficient moisture traps.
Blasting hoses shall be physically in good condition and provided with dead man
handle safety valve of air receiver to have valid TPI calibration certificate.
c) The Grit/Garnet shall be dry, salt free, free of impurities and inclusion and with a
neutral pH value.
d) Grit / Garnet shall be covered properly to be free from contamination prior to use.
f) All external surfaces shall be cleaned / Grit or Garnet blasted as per the paint
manufacturer’s recommendations.
g) All spent sand, dust and debris shall be removed from surface by vacuum, brush or
compressed air before priming.

The Mixing & Thinning of Paints shall be as per the Client’s Specification. It shall
comply with the following:
a) The pot life & the expiry date of thinners and other components of paints along with
the certificate shall be checked prior to use.
b) Only paint containers that are plainly marked with name, formula, specification,
batch number, color and date of manufacture and prior to expiry shall be used.
c) All containers of painting material shall remain unopened required for use.
d) Only Sufficient number of containers that will be used during one day shall be
opened.
e) All paints and thinners shall be stored in a well-ventilated place, free from excessive
heat, or direct rays of the sun. Open-air storage shall be avoided particularly heavy
paints, such as primers and undercoats, and special paints, which are, supplied as
two or more components in separate containers. All safety requirements shall be
implemented in accordance with inflammable material Storage Procedure.
f) All the ingredients in a container shall be thoroughly mixed before use with a
mechanical mixer which shall be fitted with an on-off control speed regulator to a
smooth and uniform consistency.
g) Painting material shall not be mixed or kept in suspension by using a bubbling air
stream.
h) Do not add thinner unless necessary for proper application. Thinning shall not
exceed limitations established by the manufacturer.
i) The mixing ratio of the two component materials shall be in accordance with the
paint manufacturer’s specification’s minimum & maximum times for over coating
laid down in the Manufacturer’s specifications shall be strictly adhered.

k) Under no circumstances shall any thinner be added to paint without the approval of
the Inspector / Client. The thinner, which is recommended by the paint
manufacturer, should only be used. The use of kerosene or similar items will not be
permitted.
l) When use of thinner is permissible, it shall be added during the mixing process.
Painters shall not add thinner after paint has been thinned to the proper consistency.
All mixing should be done in the presence of the JO Inspector / Company
Representative, and all thinning shall be done under the supervision of one
acquainted with the correct amount and tape to be added.
m ) Ensure that surfaces are clean, dry and free from any contamination before starting
the paint application.
n) Trained and experienced operators will only conduct the surface preparation and
application of paint system.
Paint Application:
a) Blast cleaned surfaces shall be coated with one complete application of coating as
soon as practicable but in no case more than 4 hours after blasting to prevent
oxidation of the newly blasted surfaces. This period may be reduced in periods of
high humidity. The coat of paint shall be applied before any deterioration of the
prepared surface occur, otherwise sweep blasting to be carried out in case of delay
in painting.
b) Particular attention shall be given to surfaces such as welds and difficult locations
where the paint shall be patted on with the side of the brush to ensure that a full
coating is obtained.
c) Any adjacent painted surface damaged during blasting, or in the course of the work,
shall be made good with the relevant primers to the entire satisfaction of the
Inspection / Client.
d) All brushes shall be of good quality and not more than 100mm wide. Extended
handles shall not be used.

e) All painting appliance shall be cleaned immediately after use, with the cleaner
recommended by the paint manufacturer.
h) Surface shall not be coated in rain, fog, mist, snow, wind, dust or when injurious
air-borne elements exist.
i) Surface shall not be coated when the steel surface temperature is less than 3 0 C
above dew Point or Steel surface temperature above 500C, relative humidity is
greater than 85% and when air temperature is below 50 C.
j) Application of paint by roller or brush shall not be permitted (in case there is no
access or structural corners then only allowed to paint by brush).
k) No paint shall be force dried under condition, which will cause wrinkling,
blistering, formation of pores or will detrimentally affect the condition of the paint.
n) Drying intervals between the successive coats shall be according to the paint
manufacturer’s instructions.
o) Each coat shall be checked prior to the application of the next coat to ensure
uniformity of thickness and coverage and repairs observed shall be carried out.
p) For each coat of paint, dry film thickness (DFT) at random spots shall be carried
out.
q) No single point of measured film thickness shall be less than 80% of the
designated film thickness.
s) Subsequent layer shall have different colors to cover full service area.
t) Adhesion test shall be conducted for each batch of painting carries out.
u) The Painting System for the External Surfaces of External surface of Above ground
piping & Steel structure works shall be as following as per mentioned in KOC-P-
001 Rev-05 System A1.1.

All safety rules and regulation of Joint operation shall be implemented as work permit,
JSA (job safety analysis), ventilation, Application, ……... Etc.
QA/QC Engineer/ Inspector and the blasting / painting supervisor shall implement / sign
off all the required Check List in order to the documents and all the operations.
