Chapter 3: Motion In A Plane Assignment 1

1. Two vectors 𝐴⃗ and 𝐵

⃗⃗ are inclined to each other at an angle θ. Using laws of vector addition, find the magnitude and direction of their
resultant. Hence deduce the law of cosines and sines.
2. For a given 𝐴⃗ = 2𝑖̂ + 4𝑗̂ − 𝑘̂ , then what is its magnitude and direction?
3. If 𝐴⃗ = 2𝑖̂ + 4𝑗̂ − 3𝑘̂ and 𝐵
⃗⃗ = 𝑖̂ − 2𝑗̂ − 𝑘̂ , find |𝐴⃗ + 𝐵
⃗⃗ |.

4. What is the position, velocity, and acceleration of a particle, describing its path as 𝑟⃗= 5t2 𝑖̂ - 7t𝑗̂ + 4𝑘̂ at instant t=3sec?
5. A particle starts from the origin at time t=0 with a velocity of 10.0 î ms-1 and moves in the x-y plane with a constant acceleration of
( - 2.0 î + 3.0 ĵ) ms-2. (a) What is the position vector of the particle at t = 4sec? (b) What is the speed of the particle at this time?
6. A projectile is fired horizontally with a velocity u from a cliff of height h. Show that its trajectory is a parabola. Also derive expression for
(a) time of flight (b) horizontal range (b) velocity at any instant.
7. A body projected horizontally moves with the same horizontal velocity although it moves under gravity. Why?
8. The equation of trajectory of an object is given as 𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 5𝑥 2 . What trajectory is followed by the object?
(a) straight line (b) circular (c) parabolic (d) cannot be defined
9. What is the angle between velocity vector and acceleration vector in uniform circular motion?
10. Consider a ball moving with constant speed around a circle centered at the origin, as shown in the fig. When it is
at point B, its coordinates are x = - 2 m , y = 0 and its velocity is 4 m/s 𝑗̂. What will be Its acceleration at point A?
11. What is the angle between velocity and acceleration at the highest point of a projectile motion?
12. When does the following are maximum for a projectile: (i) height attained by a projectile and (ii) horizontal range?
13. What will be the effect on horizontal range of a projectile when its initial velocity is doubled keeping angle of projection same?
14. A projectile is fired with Kinetic energy 1 KJ. If the range is maximum, what is its Kinetic energy, at the highest point?0
15. What is the angle between velocity and acceleration at the highest point of a projectile motion?
16. Find the magnitude of the centripetal acceleration of a particle on the tip of a fan blade, 0.30 m in diameter, rotating at 1200 rev/min.
17. The greatest height to which a man can throw a stone is h. What is the greatest distance up to which he can throw the same stone?
18. Show that there are two angles α and β projections for the same horizontal range, such that α+β=900.
19. Prove that the maximum horizontal range is four times the maximum height attained by the projectile, when fired at an inclination to
have maximum range.
20. Two projectiles A & B having masses 10 kg and 20 kg are projected at an angle 30° and 60° respectively, with the same speed from
the same point. What is the ratio of maximum height attained by A and B?
21. A cricket ball is thrown at a speed of 28 m/s in a direction 30° with the horizontal. What will be the time taken by the ball to return to
the same level? What will be the distance from the thrower to the point where the ball returns to the same level?
22. A bullet fired at an angle of 30° with the horizontal hits the ground 3 km away. By adjusting the angle of projection, can one hope to hit
the target 5 km away? Assume that the muzzle speed to be fixed and neglect air resistance.
23. A rescue pilot drops a survival kit while her plane is flying at an altitude of 2000.0 m with a forward velocity of 100.0 m/s. If air friction is
disregarded, how far in advance of the starving explorer’s drop zone should she release the package?
24. A cyclist starts from center O of a circular park of radius 5m, moves along the path OPRQO as shown. What will be
his distance and displacement at the end of the journey? If he maintains constant speed of 10 ms–1, what will be his
acceleration at point R in magnitude & direction? If the cyclist at point R applies brakes and reduces his speed at the
constant rate of 10 ms–2, what will be the magnitude and direction of the net acceleration of the cyclist on this circular turn?
