MODULE 3 WEEK 3 QUARTER 2
What I Need to Know
Students of the 21st century must be able to locate, understand, evaluate, and use written information in their personal and
academic lives. Fisher and Frey (2008). Every time you engage in writing whether it is for academic purposes or for the
professional field, it is a requirement that you identify first your purpose.

disciplines. EN11/12RWS-IVdg-12;
a. Book Review and Article Review. EN11/12RWS-IVdg-12.1
b. Literature Review. EN11/12RWS-IVdg-12.2
c. Research Paper. EN11/12RWS-IVdg-12.3
d. Project Proposal. EN11/12RWS-IVdg-12.4
e. Position Paper

What you are expected to learn

By the end of this module, you will have been able to:
1. Identify the unique features and requirements in composing a text.
2. Define the different features in composing a text.

Handbook of Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Climate Change
and Natural Disasters
By Yingigba Akenyemi
Climate change is increasingly of great concern to the world community. The earth has witnessed the build-up of
greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere changes in biodiversity, and more occurrences of natural disasters. Recently, scientists
have begun to shift their emphasis away from curbing carbon dioxide emission to adapting to carbon dioxide emission. The
increase in natural disasters around the world is unprecedented in earth’s history and these disasters are often associated to climate
changes. Many nations along the coastal lines are threatened by massive floods and tsunamis. Earthquakes are increasing in
intensity and erosion and droughts are problems in many parts of the developing countries. This book is therefore to investigate
ways to prepare and effectively manage these disasters and possibly reduce their impacts. The book takes an in-depth look at
climate change and its association to socio-economic development and cultures especially in vulnerable communities; and
investigates how communities can develop resilience to disasters. A balanced and a multiple perspective approach to manage the
risks associated with natural disasters is offered by engaging authors from the entire world to proffer solutions.

FEATURES OF TEXTS ACROSS DISCIPLINE
1. BOOK REVIEW OR ARTICLE CRITIQUE
It is a form of literacy criticism in which a book or article is analyzed in terms of its content, style, and
merit. The length of the review may vary from a single paragraph to a complete essay which uses the personal
preferences of the writer.
Three things in preparing a book review: Describes, Analyzes, Evaluates.
In writing a book review or article critique, there are things which you have to consider:
 Before Reading
1. TITLE- a. what does it suggest? b. what is your knowledge about the title
2. PREFACE or INTRODUCTION- a. can you identify any limitations? b. are there parts which the author
intentionally or unintentionally ignored?
3. TABLE OF CONTENTS- a. how the ideas organized? b. what logical orders does it follow?
 During reading
1. What is the genre or general field?
2. What is the author’s point of view?
3. Do you agree or disagree with it?
 Writing Review

2|READING AND WRITING SKILLS

STEPS IN WRITING A LITERATURE REVIEW
1. Introduce the literature review by pointing out the major research topic that will be discussed
2. Identify the broad problem area but don’t be too global (for example, discussing the history of education when the topic
is on specific instructional strategy)
3. Discuss the general importance of your topic for those in your field
4. Don’t attempt to cover everything written on your topic
5. You will need to pick out the research most relevant to the topic you are studying
6. You will use the studies in your literature review as “evidence” that your research question is an important one
7. It is important to cover research relevant to all the variables being studied.
8. Research that explains the relationship between these variables is a top priority.
9. You will need to plan how you will structure your literature review and write from this plan

3. RESEARCH REPORT- It is often used in the sciences, engineering, and psychology. Its main aim is to present the
research in a manner that the readers can easily understand the report – what it is all about, its purpose, and the result. The
report contains the presentation of a research conducted in a particular field. It is done to recommend solutions to an
identified problem for the target entities.
The main objective of a research report is to communicate to the readers the conducted research in the most
understandable way possible, so it uses a specific format.

4. PROJECT PROPOSAL- A proposal contains proposed solution to an identified problem.

A formal project proposal uses the format:
 Introduction- contains the project description which outlines how the problem would be addressed
 Body, and
 Conclusion
Parts of an informal project proposal:
 Introduction
 Discussion, and
 Conclusion
It comes in a form of a memo, letter or e-mail
5. POSITION PAPER- Position papers are written with a purpose of presenting your personal stance on an issue and try to
persuade the readers to take on your side. In winning the readers over, you take on the challenge of supporting your stance
with a sound and logical arguments supported by valid evidences.
Two Kinds of Readers:
1. One whom you share the same values
2. One who has opposite beliefs
Basic Components:
1. A well-defined issue
2. A clear personal position about the issue
3. A convincing argument
4. Reasonable tone

STEPS IN WRITING A POSITION PAPER

a. Exploring and researching about the issue- You have to explore the issue by determining the pros and cons to
identify the possible readers for your paper.
b. Consider Purpose and Audience- What argumentative strategies should I use? How do they define the issue? What
is their level of acceptance or rejection of the issue?
c. Testing your Choice and developing your Reasoning- Does this topic really interest me? Is this topic completed in
the time allotted? In developing, you have to list your reasons for your position statement. Identify the strongest and
weakest position.
d. Anticipating Counter Arguments and Restating your Thesis Statement- You have to list down the counter argument.
Begin analyzing each counter argument & refute each one.
e. Drafting your Paper- Begin drafting your format, by using the format: introduction, body, and conclusion.
