Grade Level: Grade 1

Subject: English Language Arts

Topic: Adjectives

Lesson Duration: Approximately 45 minutes

Objective:
Students will be able to identify and use adjectives to describe nouns in sentences.

Materials Needed:

 Picture cards of various objects (animals, fruits, objects, etc.)

 Sentence strips
 Adjective word cards (e.g., colorful, big, small, happy)
 Whiteboard and markers
 Worksheets with sentences missing adjectives
 Storybook with descriptive sentences (optional)

Lesson Plan:

1. Engage (Explore): (10 minutes)

 Show students a few picture cards of different objects (e.g., a big elephant, a red apple).
 Ask students what they notice about each object. Prompt them to describe the objects
using adjectives (e.g., big elephant, red apple).
 Write down their responses on the board to visually represent adjectives.

2. Explore: (15 minutes)

 Introduce the concept of adjectives as words that describe nouns (people, places, things).
 Provide more picture cards and ask students to come up with their own adjectives to
describe each object. For example, show a picture of a happy child and ask students to
think of words that describe how the child looks or feels.
 Discuss and compare the different adjectives students come up with.

3. Explain: (10 minutes)

 Write a simple sentence on the board (e.g., "The cat is _____.") and explain that
adjectives are words that describe nouns to give more information about them.
 Show adjective word cards and ask students to choose an appropriate adjective to
complete the sentence.
 Discuss why each chosen adjective fits the sentence.

4. Elaborate: (10 minutes)

 Distribute worksheets with sentences missing adjectives.

 Ask students to choose adjectives from a word bank or come up with their own adjectives
to complete each sentence.
 Walk around the room to provide assistance and check for understanding as students
work independently.

5. Evaluate: (5 minutes)

 Review the completed worksheets together as a class.

 Ask students to share some of their favorite sentences they wrote using adjectives.
 Provide feedback and praise for correct usage of adjectives.

Extension (Optional):

 Read a storybook that contains descriptive sentences with adjectives. Ask students to
identify and discuss the adjectives used in the story.

Homework (Optional):

 Assign students to find and write down five adjectives they notice in everyday life (e.g.,
at home, in the park).

Assessment:

 Observe students' participation during class discussions and their ability to correctly use
adjectives in sentences on the worksheets.

Differentiation:

 Provide additional support for students who may struggle by using more visual aids and
simpler sentences.
 Challenge advanced students by encouraging them to use more creative adjectives or
write longer descriptive sentences.
