THEME: The Red Huapo
We will talk about an endangered animal in Peru that is characterized mainly by its
reddish, hairless face.
It lives in trees, in areas that are periodically flooded, and feeds on fruits, seeds,
insects and small animals.
During the day they roam in small groups in search of food, but to sleep at night all
members of the herd gather together.
Their favorite fruit is also in danger of extinction.
It has an irregular distribution in the Amazon, between the Yavarí and Ucayali
rivers.
It's favorite habitat is the aguaje palm trees.
They can live up to 20 years. They mate between October and May.
It's a victim of poachers, who use it as food or simple bait and, worse still, of the
activities of the logging industry that is taking away its natural habitat.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The red huapo has a reddish bald head without hair.
It's tail is short, and its hair is brown, grayish or whitish.
It's body measures thirty-six to fifty-seven centimeters and its tail fourteen to
sixteen centimeters.
The male red huapo weighs three to four kilograms and the female two to three
kilograms.
They have strong fangs.
The habitat of the huapo colorado, or red howler monkey, primarily consists of
tropical rainforests and moist lowland forests. They are often found in areas with
dense vegetation, where they can easily find food such as fruits, leaves, and
flowers. These monkeys are typically arboreal, spending most of their time in the
trees, and they prefer habitats with ample canopy cover for protection and foraging.
The guapo colorado is currently inhabiting dense shrublands and forest edges in
South America, where it is foraging for insects and fruits.
The huapo colorado is living in the tropical rainforests. The species is thriving in
areas with plenty of fruit
These animals are adapting to changes in their environment.
