In 1959, the government of Egypt was working on a plan to build a dam on the River Nile. It was
called the Aswan Dam, and it was intended to generate electricity and allow the river water to be used for
agriculture. There was one big problem with the plan, though. The dam would flood a nearby valley that
contained ancient Egyptian treasures, including two enormous stone temples.
It can be difficult for governments to choose culture and history over economics. However, if
countries always made decisions like this, the majority of the world's ancient sites would end up being
destroyed. Luckily, UNESCO stepped in. They formed a committee that tried to convince Egypt to protect
its ancient treasures. With support from many countries, they were finally successful. The huge temples
were carefully removed from their original site and moved to a safe location so that the dam could be built.
After their success in saving the temples in Egypt, UNESCO went on to save more sites around the
world. They protected lagoons in Venice, ruins in Pakistan, and temples in Indonesia. With
industrialisation changing the world rapidly, there were many sites that needed to be saved. Eventually,
UNESCO formed the World Heritage Organisation to protect important natural and historic sites wherever
it was necessary.
By now, the World Heritage Organisation has protected hundreds of sites ranging from beautiful
natural islands to buildings in large cities and ancient ruins. If you're able to visit any of the many protected
sites, you'll agree it was worth it.

EDUCATION IN THE FUTURE
Education is another area of social life in which information technology is changing the way we
communicate. Today's college students may not simply sit in a lecture or a library to learn about their field.
Through their computers and the wonders of virtual reality they can participate in lifelike simulated
experiences. Consider the following scenario of the future of education made possible through
developments in information technology.
For children over the age of 10, daily attendance at schools is not compulsory. Some of the older
children attend school only once or twice weekly to get tutorial support or instruction from a teacher. For
the most part, pupils are encouraged to work online from home. Students must complete a minimum
number of study hours per year; however, they may make up these hours by studying at home at times that
suit their family schedule. They can log on early or late in the day and even join live classes in other
countries. In order to ensure that each student is learning adequately, computer software will automatically
monitor the number of hours a week each student studies on-line as well as that students' learning materials
and assessment activities. Reports will be available for parents and teachers. The software can then identify
the best learning activities and condition for each individual student and generate similar activities. It
can also identify areas of weak achievement and produce special programs adjusted to the students' needs.

Question 6. What is the topic of the passage?

Question 10. Who/What counts the number of hours per week that students spend learning?

Question 11. What CAN'T the software do?
A. Monitor the time the students learn. B. Design materials for the students

TAPESCRIPT:
This week in our Foreign Student Series, we discuss the first steps for students interested in higher
education in the United States.
One place to go for advice and information about American colleges and universities is an Education USA
center. More than four hundred of these educational advising centers are located around the world.
The advisers at Education USA centers do not charge any money for their services. They help students find
schools and get information about financial aid, admissions tests and visa requirements. The centers are
supported by the State Department. You can find the nearest one on the State Department's website for
international students. The address is educationusa.state.gov. Again, it's educationusa.state.gov.
Another place to get information is at an educational fair. Representatives of American colleges and
universities present information and answer questions from students and their parents. The Institute of
International Education has been organizing United States Higher Education Fairs in Asia since nineteen
eighty-two. Last year, about fourteen thousand students attended these fairs in China, India, Indonesia,
Japan, Thailand and Viet Nam.
One important piece of advice – give yourself plenty of time to plan your studies in the United States.
Educational advisers say you should begin planning at least two years before you want to start classes.
That’s all for today. If you have a question on American higher education, just email us. Bye for now.

VI. Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question. (1.4 point)
Many young people strive to be independent. That means you are able to take care of yourself, and you
don't have to rely on anyone else. However, to live independently, you need a number of life skills in order
not to depend on your parents and older brothers or sisters. One of the most important skills is time
management which can help you build your confidence and self-esteem. With good time management
skills, you can perform your daily tasks, including your responsibilities at school and at home with pleasing
results. Moreover, you will not feel stressed when exam dates are approaching. These skills can also help
you act more independently and responsibly, get better grades at school and have more time for your
family and friends.
Developing time-management skills is not as challenging as you may think. Firstly, make a plan for
things you need to do, including appointments and deadlines. Using a diary or apps on mobile devices will
remind you of what you need to accomplish and when you need to accomplish it. Secondly, prioritize your
activities. You need to decide which tasks are the most urgent and important and then, concentrate on these
first. This way, you may not be at a loss to deal with too much work at the same time. Thirdly, develop
routines because routines, when established, take less time for you to do your tasks.
Time management skills are not hard to develop; once you master them, you will find out that they are
great keys to success and you can become independent.
