COCONUT SHELL ACTIVATED CARBON

Activated carbon is available in various forms:

Granular, pelletized, and powdered. Each form
serves different applications:
Air or Gas Treatment: Coarse particles minimize
pressure loss, making them suitable for this application.

Liquid Treatment: Finer particles improve the rate of

purification.

How It Works-
Activated carbon purifies through a process called
adsorption. Molecules are attracted to and held on the
carbon’s internal surface by weak forces known as
London forces. This process can sometimes be reversed
by changing conditions, like heating or applying pressure.

Manufacturing Process-
Activated carbon is produced from coal, wood, and
coconut shells. These materials are subjected to a
thermal process, sometimes with a chemical promoter, to
create the required porosity.
Uses of Activated Carbon-
Activated carbon has a wide range of
applications, including: -
Home Appliances: Present in water filters, air
purifiers, and odor control products.

Anode – it is mainly used in electric battery

manufacturing process.

Water purification – Mainly used in water purification

processing plants

Industry: Used in the production of chemicals,

electronics, pharmaceuticals, and construction materials.

Environmental: Purifies gases in waste-to-energy

plants, controls odors at sewage facilities, and recovers
precious metals from mining.

Major Players in the Industry As of 2023, the

largest companies in the activated carbon industry are:

1. Jacobi Carbons
2. United Carbons
3. Core Carbons
Plant Cost-
Setting up an activated carbon manufacturing plant
requires a significant investment.

On average, the cost of establishing a plant is

around 10 crores INR, ( Minimum ) especially
when dealing with larger quantities. However payment is
always made only in 60-90 days credit, you should a
good cash flow and after covid the competition was
increased drastically. The profit percent will be around
10% to 20%.

Major Problems-
One of the significant challenges in the
activated carbon industry is pollution. The
manufacturing process can cause
environmental pollution, necessitating strict
control measures and sustainable practices to
mitigate the impact.
Processing Activated Carbon-
After production, activated carbon undergoes further
processing such as crushing, screening, washing, and
grinding to meet specific client requirements.
