Part 2. Questions 66 – 75 (2.0 points - 0.2/ each)
Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question.
Today we take electricity for granted and perhaps we do not realize just how useful this
discovery has been. Steam was the first invention that replaced wind power. It was used to drive
engines and was passed through pipes and radiators to warm rooms. Petrol mixed with air was
the next invention that provided power. Exploded in a cylinder, it drove a motor engine. Beyond
these simple and direct uses, those forms have not much adaptability.
On the other hand, we make use of electricity in thousands of ways. From the powerful
voltages that drive our electric trains to the tiny current needed to work a simple calculator, and
from the huge electric magnet in steel works that can lift 10 tons to the tiny electric magnet in a
doorbell, all are powered by electricity. An electric current can be made with equal ease to heat
a huge mass of molten metal in a furnace, or to boil a jug for a cup of coffee.
Other than atomic energy, which has not as yet been harnessed to the full, electricity is
the greatest power in the world. It is flexible, and so adaptable for any task for which it is
wanted. It travels so easily and with incredible speed along wires and conductors that it can be
supplied instantly over vast distances.
To generate electricity, huge turbines or generators must be turned. In Australia they use
coal or water to drive this machinery. When dams are built, falling water is used to drive the
turbines without polluting the atmosphere with smoke from coal.
Atomic power is used in several countries but there is always the fear of an accident. A
tragedy once occurred at Chernobyl, in Ukraine, at an atomic power plant used to make
electricity. The reactor leaked, which caused many deaths through radiation.
Now scientists are examining new ways of creating electricity without harmful effects to
the environment. They may harness the tides as they flow in and out of bays. Most importantly,
they hope to trap sunlight more efficiently. We do not use solar heaters for swimming pools but
as yet improvement in the capacity of the solar cells to create more current is necessary. When
this happens, electric cars will be viable and the world will rid itself of the toxic gases given off
by trucks and cars that burn fossil fuels.
66. The author mentions the sources of energy such as wind, steam, petrol in the first paragraph
to________.
A. suggest that electricity should be alternated with safer sources of energy.
B. emphasize the usefulness and adaptability of electricity.
C. imply that electricity is not the only useful source of energy.
D. discuss which source of energy can be a suitable alternative to electricity.
67. Before electricity, what was sometimes passed through pipes to heat rooms?
A. Gas B. Petrol C. Steam D. Hot wind

Page 4
68. What does the author mean by saying that electricity is flexible?
A. It is cheap and easy to use B. It is used to drive motor engines
C. It can be adapted to various uses D. It can be made with ease
69. What do we call machines that make electricity?
A. Voltages B. Electric magnets
C. Generators or Turbines D. Pipes and radiators
70. The main forms of power used to generate electricity in Australia are ________.
A. atomic power and water B. water and coal
C. sunlight and wind power D. wind and gas
71. The word “they” in the last paragraph refers to ________.
A. harmful effects B. the tides C. scientists D. new ways
72. Electric magnets are used in steel works to ________.
A. lift heavy weights up to ten tons B. test the steel for strength
C. heat the molten steel D. boil a jug of water

that they ________.
A. do not pollute the environment B. are more reliable
C. are more adaptable D. do not require attention
74. Which of the following power sources causes pollution by emitting harmful gases?
A. Sunlight B. Petrol C. Water D. Wind

Part 2. Questions 76 – 85 (2.0 points - 0.2/ each)
Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question
A survey is a study, generally in the form of an interview or a questionnaire, that
provides information concerning how people think and act. In the United States, the best-known
surveys are the Gallup poll and the Harris poll. As anyone who watches the news during
presidential campaigns knows, these polls have become an important part of political life in the
United States.
North Americans are familiar with the many "person on the street" interviews on local
television news shows. While such interviews can be highly entertaining, they are not
necessarily an accurate indication of public opinion. First, they reflect the opinions of only those
people who appear at a certain location. Thus, such samples can be biased in favor of
commuters, middle-class shoppers, or factory workers, depending or which area the newspeople
select. Second, television interviews tend to attract outgoing people who are willing to appear
on the air, while they frighten away others who may feel intimidated by a camera. A survey
must be based on a precise, representative sampling if it is to genuinely reflect a broad range of
the population.
In preparing to conduct a survey, sociologists must exercise great care in the wording of
questions. An effective survey question must be simple and clear enough for people to
Page 10
understand it. It must also be specific enough so that there are no problems in interpreting the
results. Even questions that are less structured must be carefully phrased in order to elicit the
type of information desired. Surveys can be indispensable sources of information, but only if the
sampling is done properly and the questions are worded accurately.
There are two main forms of surveys: the interview and the questionnaire. Each of these
forms of survey research has its advantages. An interviewer can obtain a high response rate
because people find it more difficult to turn down a personal request for an interview than to
throw away a written questionnaire. In addition, an interviewer can go beyond written questions
and probe for a subject's underlying feelings and reasons. However, questionnaires have the
advantage of being cheaper and more consistent.

Part 2. Questions 66 – 75 (2.0 points - 0.2/ each)
Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question
WARNING ON GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming could cause drought and possibly famine in China the source of much of
Hong Kong's food, by 2050, a new report predicts. Hong Kong could also be at risk from
flooding as sea levels rose The report recommends building sea-walls around low-lying areas
such as the new port and airport reclamations. Published by the World Wide Fund for Nature
(WWF), the report, which includes work by members of the Chinese Academy of

Page 15
Meteorological Sciences, uses the mostrecent projections on climate change to point to a
gloomy outlook for China.
By 2050 about 30 to 40 per cent of the country will experience changes in the type of
vegetation it supports, with tropical and sub-tropical forest conditions shifting northward and
hot desert conditions rising in the west where currently the desert is temperate. Crop-growing
areas will expand but any benefit is expected to be negated by increased evaporation of
moisture, making it too dry to grow crops such as rice. The growing season also is expected to
alter, becoming shorter in southern and central China, the mainland's breadbasket. The rapid
changes make it unlikely that plants could adapt.
"China will produce smaller crops. In the central and northern areas, and the southern
part, there will be decreased production because of water limitations," Dr. Rik Leemans, one of
the authors of the report, said during a brief visit to the territory yesterday. Famine could result
because of the demands of feeding the population - particularly if it grows - and the diminished
productivity of the land. "It looks very difficult for the world as a whole," he said.
Global warming is caused by the burning of large amounts of fossil fuels, such as coal
and oil, which release gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. World temperatures already have
increased this century by about 0.6 degrees Celsius and are projected to rise by between 1.6
degrees and 3.8 degrees by 2100.
Dr. Leemans said China's reliance on coal-fired power for its indus-trial growth did not
bode well for the world climate. "I think the political and economic powers in China are much
greater than the environ-mental powers, and [greenhouse gas emissions] could accelerate," Dr-
Leemans said. "China is not taking the problem seriously yet, although it is trying to incorporate
this kind of research to see what is going to happen."
The climate change report, which will be released tomorrow, focuse on China but Mr
David Melville of WWF-Hong Kong said some of the depressing scenarios could apply to the
territory. Food supplies, for instance, could be affected by lower crop yields. "Maybe we could
afford to import food from elsewhere but you have to keep in mind that the type of changes
experienced in southern China will take place elsewhere as well," he said. Sea levels could rise
as glaciers melted and the higher temperatures expanded the size of the oceans, threatening
much of developed Hong Kong which is built on reclaimed land. Current projections are that
sea levels worldwide will rise by 15 to 90 centimetres by 2100, depending on whether action is
taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
"Hong Kong has substantial areas built on reclaimed land and sea level rises could
impact on that, not only on Chek Lap Kok but the West Kowloon Reclamation and the Central
and Western Reclamation – the whole lot," Mr Melville said, adding that sea-walls would be
needed. Depleted fresh water supplies would be another problem because increased evaporation
would reduce levels. Mr Melville said the general outlook could be helped if Hong Kong used
water less wastefully and encouraged energy efficiency to reduce fuel-burning. He also called
on the West to help China improve its efficiency.
66. Overall, what sort of picture is painted of the future effects of global warming?

Public awareness of the value of recycling materials such (56) _____ plastic, paper, and
glass is increasing daily in all corners of the globe. In some countries these efforts are being
(57) _____ by the local governments and in others, by individuals. Participation in these
programs is at an all-time high. In the small town of Truro in eastern Massachusetts, for

lumber at the land fill, local residents have come up with many (59) _____ programs to recycle
and/ or reuse what was once (60) _____ of as only trash. For instance, yard waste such as leaves

Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question
Lake Baikal, the world’s largest lake, is located in southern Siberia, in Russia. It
measures 395 miles long by 50 miles wide and it has 1,245 miles of coastline. The lake’s rocky
basin consists of three depressions, which hold a total volume of 14,656 cubic miles of water,
20 percent of the freshwater in the world. The lake is also very deep, with its deepest point at
over 1 mile and an average depth of 2,066 feet. Furthermore, scientists have determined that
Lake Baikal is theoldest lake in the world. From sediment obtained by drilling deep down
below the lake, researchers estimate it to be at least 25 million years old.
To scientists, Lake Baikal is of particular interest because of its unique and isolated
ecosystem. More than 1,000 species of plants and animals found at Lake Baikal exist nowhere
else on earth and some can be dated to prehistoric times. Among its unique fauna is the Baikal
freshwater seal. This creature, which local people call nerpa, is the only mammal which inhabits
the lake. Researchers speculate that these seals, which have been breeding at Lake Baikal for 22
million years, are thedescendents of ocean-dwelling seals which migrated inland in search of
food, when the lake was still connected to the sea. Another creature that is unique to this
Siberian Lake is the omu, a fish, which is caught by local fisherman and is considered a great
delicacy.
For centuries, the water in LakeBaikal was so clear that it was possible to see down to
depths of 40 to 60 feet. Several factors contributed to keeping the water crystal clear. First, the
lake contained certain small zoo plankton and small crustaceans that consumed waterweeds,
bacteria, and other material that would otherwise cloud the water. Furthermore, the water in the
lake consisted of rainwater and melted snow that flowed down from a mountain range in about
300 streams and through uninhabited forest. Finally, most of the watershed has a rocky surface,
so the water flowing into the lake did not accumulate mud or organic matter and had little
mineral or chemical content.

It was once believed that being overweight was healthy, but nowadays few people subscribe
to this viewpoint. While many people are fighting the battle to reduce weight, studies are being
conducted concerning the appetitle and how it is controlled by both emotional and biochemical
Page 27
factors. Some of the conclusions of these studies may give insights into how to deal with weight
prolems. For example, when several hundred people were asked about their eating habits in
times of stress, 44 percent said they reacted to stressful situations by eating. Further
investigations with both humans and animals indicated that it is not food which relieves tension
but rather the act of chewing.
A test in which subjects were blindfolded showed that obese people have a keener sense of
taste and crave more flavorful food than non-obese people. When deprived of the variety and
intensity of tastes, obese peole are not satisfied and consequently eat more to fulfill this need.
Blood samples taken from people after they were shown a picture of food revealed that
overweight people reacted with an increase in blood insulin, a chemical associated with
appetite. This did not happen to average-weight people.
In another experiment, results showed that certain people have a specific, biologically
induced hunger for carbohydrates. Eating carbohydrates raise the level of serotonin, a
neurotransmitter in the brain. Enough serotonin produces a sense of satiation, and hunger for
carbohydrates subsides.
Exercise has been recommended as an important part of a weight-loss program. However, it
has been found that mild exercise, such as using the stairs instead of the elevator, is better in the
long run than taking on a strenuous program, such as jogging, which many people find difficult
to continue over long periods of time and which also increases appetite.

Part 2. Questions 66 – 75 (2.0 points - 0.2/ each)
Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question
The languages spoken by early Europeans are still shrouded in mystery. There is no
linguistic continuity between the languages of Old Europe (a term sometimes used for Europe
between 7,000 and 3,000 B.C.) and the languages of the modern world, and we cannot yet
translate the Old European script. Scholars have deciphered other ancient languages, such as
Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian, which used the cuneiform script, because of the
fortuitous discovery of bilingual inscriptions. When cuneiform tablets were first discovered in
the 18th century, scholars could not decipher them. Then inscriptions found in Iran at the end of
the 18th century provided a link: these inscriptions were written in cuneiform and in two other
ancient languages, Old Persian and New Elamite – languages that had already been deciphered.
It took several decades, but scholars eventually translated the ancient cuneiform script via the
more familiar Old Persian language.
Similarly, the hieroglyphic writing of the Egyptians remained a mystery until French
troops unearthed the famous Rosetta stone in the late 18 th century. The stone carried the same
message written in ancient Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and Egyptian hieratic, a simplified
form of hieroglyphs. The Rosetta stone thwarted scholars’ efforts for several decades until the
early 19th century when several key hieroglyphic phrases were decoded using the Greek

Page 33
inscriptions. Unfortunately, we have no Old European Rosetta stone to chart correspondences
between Old European script and the languages that replaced it.
The incursions of Indo-European tribes into Old Europe from the late 5 th to the early 3rd
millennia B.C. caused a linguistic and cultural discontinuity. These incursions disrupted the Old
European sedentary farming lifestyle that had existed for 3,000 years. As the Indo-Europeans
encroached on Old Europe from the east, the continent underwent upheavals. These severely
affected the Balkans, where the Old European cultures abundantly employed script. The Old
European way of life deteriorated rapidly, although pockets of Old European cultural remained
for several millennia. The new peoples spoke completely different languages belonging to the
Indo-European linguistic family. The Old European language or languages, and the script used
to write them, declined and eventually vanished.
61. What is the main topic of the passage?
A. Reason for the failure to understand the written records of Old European culture.

63. When does the passage suggest that ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic script was finally
deciphered?
A. At around the same time as cuneiform script was deciphered.
B. Shortly before the Rosetta stone was unearthed.
C. As soon as additional bilingual inscriptions became available to scholars.
D. A few decades after the hieratic script was decoded.
64. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE of the Rosetta stone?
A. It was found by scholars trying to decode ancient languages.
B. It contains two versions of hieroglyphic script.
C. Several of its inscriptions were decoded within a few months of its discovery.

Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question
Continents and ocean basins represent the largest identifiable bodies on Earth. On the solid
portions of the planet, the second most prominent features are flat plains, elevated plateaus, and
large mountain ranges. In geography, the term “continent” refers to the surface of continuous
landmasses that together comprise about 29.2% of the planet’s surface. On the other hand,
another definition is prevalent in the general use of the term that deals with extensive
mainlands, such as Europe or Asia, that actually represent one very large landmass. Although
all continents are bounded by water bodies or high mountain ranges, isolated mainlands, such
as Greenland and India-Pakistan areas are called subcontinents. In some circles, the distinction
between continents and large islands lies almost exclusively in the size of particular landmass.
The analysis of compression and tension in the earth’s crust has determined that continental
structures are composed of layers that underlie continental shelves. A great deal of disagreement
among geologists surrounds the issue of exactly how many layers underlie each landmass
because of their distinctive mineral and chemical composition. It is also quite possible that the
ocean floor rests on the top of unknown continents that have not yet been explored. The
continental crust is believed to have been formed by means of a chemical reaction when lighter
materials separated from heavier ones, thus settling at various levels within the crust. Assisted
by the measurements of the specifics within crust formations by means of monitoring
earthquakes, geologists can speculate that a chemical split occurred to form the atmosphere, sea
water, and the crust before it solidified many centuries ago.
Although each continent has its special features, all consist of various combinations of
components that include shields, mountain belts, intracratonic basins, margins, volcanic
plateaus, and block vaulted belts. The basic differences among continents lie in the proportion
and the composition of these features relative to the continent size. Climatic zones have a
crucial effect on the weathering and formation of the surface features, soil erosion, soil
deposition, land formation, vegetation, and human activities.
Mountain belts are elongated narrow zones that have a characteristic folded sedimentary
organization of layers. They are typically produced during substantial crustal movements, which
generate faulting and mountain building. When continental margins collide, the rise of a
marginal edge leads to the formation of large mountain ranges, as explained by the plate
tectonic theory. This process also accounts for the occurrence of mountain belts in ocean basins
and produces evidence for the ongoing continental plate evolution.

Part 2. Questions 66 – 75 (2.0 points - 0.2/ each)
Page 45
Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question
What I love about my job is the variety. I get enquiries from people all over the world
asking me how they should go about setting up their own website. I’ve been asked about so
many subjects - anything from someone wanting to teach people how to throw boomerangs to
another people selling paper flowers which they make at home in their spare time.
Obviously with all the thousands of websites available at the click of a button, you want
to create an impression with your website so that it becomes a must-see destination. Not
everyone is prepared, however, for the way in which a website can become so popular that it
actually has to be closed down.
When people first set up their websites they probably pay their web advertiser a monthly
fee based on the number of hits or page impressions their site receives. If they can pay their
monthly fee without it costing them too much, that is the best that most people hope for. One
guy, Pete Bennett, whom I helped, wanted to set up a one-stop shop to provide decent images of
the world’s flags. He’d been fascinated by flags since his boyhood and had no idea that
thousands of other people share his passion. Anyway, in one month his web page had over 1.5
million hits. As a result his internet provider trebled the fee that he was being charged. He
wasn’t a rich person and he couldn’t afford to spend that amount of money on a hobby without
any benefit to him, so he decided to carry advertising on his site. He found a company which
specializes in smaller sites and adverts were added to the pages on his website. So, although he
doesn’t make a huge profit, at least his hobby provides him with a small income.
If you have specialist skills or expertise, it can pay you to sell the products that people
want. I helped one woman design a page to advertise the fact that she tells fortunes, based on
the information that her clients supply her with. If you want her to tell your fortune, you fill in a
questionnaire online - your age, date of birth, hobbies, interests and so on and for a small fee
she e-mails you back your fortune. You can print it out and it looks really good, decorated with
moons and stars, your zodiac sign and your birthstone. I tried it myself and although I’m not
sure I believe it, my future according to her is positive and exciting. I also found out that for
someone born in August, like me, the birthstone is a period, a pale green stone which I’d never
even heard of!
I also get a fair number of complaints from people e-mailing me to say that they can’t
access the website. When they click on the site a message appears on their screen saying ‘An
error has occurred in the script on this page’. This usually happens when someone has tried to
achieve fancy effects on their website by using programming techniques based on a scripting
language. This means that unless they really know what they are doing, whoever designed the
site has probably made a mistake in their programming. This is where people like me come in.
Most computer instruction guides make things appear quite straightforward, but unless you’re
very skilled, you’re likely to run into problems. It’s generally worth getting a professional to
help you set up your site in the first place - otherwise people like me would be out of work. And
let’s face it, this is big business.
66. What does Paul Howells enjoy most about his job?
A. Dealing with different people. B. The range of topics.
C. His worldwide contacts. D. Teaching design skills.
67. What does Paul mean by ‘a must-see destination’ in paragraph 2?
A. A website that can no longer be seen. B. A website that does not make a charge.

68. Why did Pete Bennett set up a website on flags?
A. He knew lots of people shared his interest. C. He hoped to make a lot of money.
B. A web advertiser wanted to sell flags. D. He’d been interested in flags for years.
69. What word can best replace the word “hits” in paragraph 3?

70. Why did Pete Bennett accept advertising on his website?
Page 46
A. To attract more hits. B. To add more interest.
C. To repay the huge fee. D. To help him earn some money.

A. Interested people B. Web page designers
C. Internet providers D. Product advertisers

A shorter presentation
Do you find the idea of sitting through yet another slide show presentation fills you with
dread? Do you find (76) ……………………..…..hard to stay awake when confronted with slide after slide
and an hour-long talk? Well, don’t worry, (77) ……………..……..is a solution. Presentations don’t
have to (78) ……………………..…..long and boring; they can be short, attention grabbing and even a
competitive sport.
In Japan in 2003 Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (79) ……………………..…..looking for a better
way for ambitious young architects to show (80) ……………………..…..work easily, efficiently and
informally. They wanted to increase the numbers of presenters talking at events and raise
audience attention and realised they needed to limit the length of presentations and make them
(81) ……………………..…..concise. They came up with something called Pecha Kucha; a presentation
format (82) ……………………..…..permits only 20 slides and only 20 seconds to talk about (83)
……………………..…..one. This means the whole presentation lasts exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
(84) ……………………..…..you start with the first slide there is no stopping and no going back.
Pecha Kucha events now take place throughout the world and are immensely popular.
The Pecha Kucha format is now being used in (85) ……………………..…..types of settings including

Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question
Jazz is an improvisational form of music that originated in the southern United
States after the Civil War. Although its origins and history are somewhat vague, we
know that it began as the musical expression of black people who had formerly been
slaves, combining hymns, spirituals, and traditional work songs into something quite
new. The style was a blend of the rhythms brought to America by the Africans who were
imported as slave labor and the popular music of the era that featured the ragtime piano.
The term jazz itself is of obscure and possible nonmusical origin, but it was first used to
describe this particular kind of musical expression in about 1915. A jazz band commonly
includes four to twelve musicians with a relatively large proportion of the group in the
rhythm section. Customarily, there are a drummer, a bass player, and a pianist. Often
there is also a banjo player or guitarist. In traditional jazz, the clarinet, trumpet, and
trombone carry the melody. In more modern jazz, the saxophone, violin, and flute may
also be included in the melody section. Some jazz bands employ a blues singer. Most
jazz is premised on the principle that an almost infinite number of variations can
accommodate themselves to a progression of chords that can be repeated indefinitely to
feature an improvisation by solo instruments or vocalists. For example, while the trumpet
plays the melody, the clarinet might embellish and invent compatible melodies around
the original theme. Such improvisation is a test of the jazz musician's skill and is referred
to as tone color. Jazz first became popular outside the United States in the 1920s when
Page 52
jazz bands began to record, distribute, and even export their recordings to Europe. Since
jazz is improvisational, it does not exist in the form of printed scores, and recorded
performances were and still are the best way of preserving the music. A very basic
library of recorded jazz would include work by such classic artists as Jelly Roll Morton,
Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Billie Holiday. Theirs is probably
America's most unique and most important contribution to the musical world, although
there are a few contemporary artists who are keeping the tradition alive.

To date, Canada has produced only one classic children’s tale to rank with Alice’s
Adventures in wonderland and the works of Mark Twain; this was Lucy Maud Montgomery’s
Anne of Green Gables. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clinton, Prince Edward Island.
Her mother died soon after her birth, and when her father went to Saskatchewan to assume a
business position, she moved in with her grandparents in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.
There she went to school and later qualified to be a teacher.
Montgomery wrote the Anne books while living in Cavendish and helping her
grandmother at the post office. The first of the books, Anne of Green Gabbles, was published in
1908, and in the next three years she wrote two sequels. Like Montgomery, the heroine of the
book is taken in by an elderly couple who lives in the fictional town of Avonlea, and
Montgomery incorporated many events from her life in Cavendish into the Anne books.
In 1911, Montgomery married Evan Macdonald and the couple soon moved to Ontario,
where she wrote many other books. However, it was her first efforts that secured her
prominence, and the Anne books are still read all around the world. Her novels have helped

Part 2. Questions 66 – 75 (2.0 points - 0.2/ each)
Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question.
The cities in the United States have been the most visible sponsors and beneficiaries of
projects that place art in public places. They have shown exceptional imagination in applying
the diverse forms of contemporary art to a wide variety of purposes. The activities observed in a
number of “pioneer” cities sponsoring art in public places—a broadening exploration of public
sites, an increasing awareness among both sponsors and the public of the varieties of
contemporary artistic practice, and a growing public enthusiasm—are increasingly characteristic
of cities across the country. With many cities now undergoing renewed development,
opportunities are continuously emerging for the inclusion or art in new or renewed public
environments, including buildings, plazas, parks, and transportation facilities. The result of
these activities is a group of artworks that reflect the diversity of contemporary art and the
varying character and goals of the sponsoring communities.
In sculpture, the projects range from a cartoonlike Mermaid in Miami Beach by Roy
Lichtenstein to a small forest planted in New York City by Alan Sonfist. The use of murals
followed quickly upon the use of sculpture and has brought to public sites the work of artists as
different as the realist Thomas Hart Benton and the Pop artist Robert Rauschenberg. The
specialized requirements of particular urban situations have further expanded the use of art in
public places: in Memphis, sculptor Richard Hunt has created a monument to Martin Luther
King, Jr., who was slain there; in New York, Dan Flavin and Bill Brand have contributed neon
and animation works to the enhancement of mass transit facilities. And in numerous cities, art
is being raised as a symbol of the commitment to revitalize urban areas.
By continuing to sponsor projects involving a growing body of art in public places, cities
will certainly enlarge the situations in which the public encounters and grows familiar with the
various forms of contemporary art. Indeed, cities are providing artists with an opportunity to
communicate with a new and broader audience. Artists are recognizing the distinction between
public and private spaces, and taking that into account when executing their public
commissions. They are working in new, often more durable media, and on an unaccustomed
scale.
66. What is the passage mainly about?

contemporary art in public places in the United States EXCEPT________.
A. the transfer of artwork from private to public sites
B. artworks that represent a city’s special character
C. greater interest in art by the American public
D. a broader understanding of the varieties of contemporary art
68. According to the passage, new settings for public art are appearing as a result of ________.
A. communities that are building more art museums

Part 2. Questions 66 – 75 (2.0 points - 0.2/ each)
Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question.
Before the mid-nineteenth century, people in the United States ate most foods only in
season. Drying, smoking and salting could preserve meat for a short time, but the availability of
fresh meat, like that of fresh milk, was very limited; there was no way to prevent spoilage. But
in 1810, a French inventor named Nicolas Appert developed the cooking-and-sealing process of
canning. And in the 1850’s an American named Gail Borden developed a means of condensing
and preserving milk. Canned goods and condensed milk became more common during the
1860’s, but supplies remained low because cans had to be made by hand. By 1880, however,
inventors had fashioned stamping and soldering machines that mass-produced cans from
tinplate. Suddenly all kinds of food could be preserved and bought at all times of the year.
Other trends and inventions had also helped make it possible for Americans to vary their
daily diets. Growing urban population created demand that encouraged fruit and vegetable
farmers to raise more produce. Railroad refrigerator cars enabled growers and meat packers to
ship perishables great distances and to preserve them for longer periods. Thus, by the 1890’s,
northern city dwellers could enjoy southern and western strawberries, grapes, and tomatoes,
previously available for a month at most, for up to six months of the year. In addition, increased
use of iceboxes enabled families to store perishables. As easy means of producing ice
commercially had been invented in the 1870’s, and by 1900 the nation had more than two
thousand commercial ice plants, most of which made home deliveries. The icebox became a
fixture in most homes and remained so until the mechanized refrigerator replaced it in the
1920’s and 1930’s.
Almost everyone now had a more diversified diet. Some people continued to eat mainly
foods that were heavily in starches or carbohydrates, and not everyone could afford meat.
Nevertheless, many families could take advantage of previously unavailable fruits, vegetables,
and dairy products to achieve more varied fare.

Most human diets contain between 10 and 15 percent of their total calories as protein.
The rest of the dietary energy comes from carbohydrates, fats, and in some people, alcohol. The
proportion of calories from fats varies from 10 percent in poor communities to 40 percent or
more in rich communities.
In addition to providing energy, fats have several other functions in the body. The fat-
soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K, are dissolved in fats, as their name implies. Good sources of
these vitamins have high oil or fat content, and the vitamins are stored in the body’s fatty
tissues. In the diet, fats cause food to remain longer in the stomach, thus increasing the feeling
of fullness for some time after a meal is eaten. Fats add variety, taste, and texture to foods,
which accounts for the popularity of fried foods. Fatty deposits in the body have an insulating
and protective value. The curves of the human female body are due mostly to strategically
located fat deposits.
Whether a certain amount of fat in the diet is essential to human health is not definitely
known. When rats are fed a fat-free diet, their growth eventually ceases, their skin becomes
inflamed and scaly, and their reproductive systems are damaged. Two fatty acids, linoleic and
arachidonic acids, prevent these abnormalities and hence are called essential fatty acids. They
also are required by a number of other animals, but their roles in human beings are debatable.
Most nutritionists consider linoleic fatty acid an essential nutrient for humans.
