Lesson 55 Long a Part 1
Lesson 55 Long a Part 1
Lesson 55 Long a Part 1
SECTION 1
Student Objectives
• Introduce long /a/ digraphs • Blend onset and rime
• Blend long /a/ digraphs words • Sort words
Introduce Long /a/ Digraphs
Materials: Long /a/ digraph picture cards
NOTE: The most common long /a/ digraphs are taught first to allow students to
become familiar with these patterns of sound. However, Lessons 55 and 56 may
be combined, based on the needs of the students.
• Show students the long /a/ digraph picture card for rain. Ask them to name the picture
and tell you the sound they hear in the middle of the word. Point to the letters ai on the
card and tell students that the letters a and i together stand for the long /a/ vowel sound
they hear in the middle of the word rain.
• Explain that the ai letter combination is one of the letter combinations that stand for the
long /a/ sound. The other letter combination focused on in this lesson is ay. Explain to
students that these letter combinations are called long /a/ digraphs.
• Say the words paint and pant aloud. Ask students which word contains the same vowel
sound as in rain. Make sure students can differentiate between the two vowel sounds.
• Show students the long /a/ digraph picture cards one by one. Have them name each
picture, point to the digraph, and say the digraph sound. Ask students to name other
words with the long /a/ digraph. Write the words on the board and invite students to
circle the digraph in each word.

Blend Long /a/ Digraph Words
Materials: Workmats, long /a/ digraph cards, letter cards
• Write the word tail on the board. Point out the long /a/ digraph and ask students to
blend the letters a and i together to make the long /a/ sound. Next, run your finger under
the letters as you blend the three sounds in tail: t/ai/l. Point out that even though there
are four letters, there are three sounds blended together to form the word. Then have
students blend the word aloud with you as you run your finger under the letters.
• Repeat the blending activity with the words maid, pain, day, and way. Take one word
at a time, pointing out the letter combinations of the long /a/ digraphs. When students
have blended all the words, ask volunteers to come up and circle the long /a/ digraph in
each word. Have a student point to each long /a/ digraph as the rest of the group says
the sound.
• If students need more work with blending words, have them use the letter/digraph
workmat, one of each long /a/ digraph card, and the letter cards to blend the words
above. Have students line up the cards for each sound in each word under the boxes
on their workmat. Group the words according to each long /a/ digraph, so that students
know which long /a/ digraph card to use for each word. Model how to push up the long
/a/ digraph card into the box on the workmat and indicate the sound the digraph makes.
Then have students push up and sound out the remaining letters of each word in order
on their workmat.
