F EXPERIMENT NO.A: TRIAL ON VANE PUMP. ¢ » Alm :- Study of vane pump and the determination of its performance characteristics > Related Theory - The pumps encountered in practice can be conveniently classified as follows :- Pumps Positive displacement ositive disp Non-Positive displacement (Hydrostatic) (Hydrodynamic) Centrifugal pump | Gear pump —— i Axial propeller i + pump External | | Internal tobe | [screw Mixed flow pump VANE PUMP :~ a) These pumps consist of slotted rotor splined to the drive shaft which rotates inside the cam ring in the pump casing. b) Vanes are fitted to the rotor slots, match) ‘fugal force and the system pressure behind the vanes push the radially “ith the inner diameter of the ring. ¢) During the rotation of rotor, the ce! f direction. d) The vanes take their positio with external edge touching with the internal running area of the cam. Famping chambers are thus formed between the vanes andareenclosedby therotor, ringandtwoside pies A) At the suction side, the partial vacuum Is created as the space and rotor is increased. Liquid here Is trappe between the pumping chambers and then s pushed into the outlet as the space decreases 8) Displacement of the pump depends upon the width of the ring. ‘The schematic of the vane pump is shown in the following figure. Outlet \Vane pumps can be further classified as :- _ a Unbalanced Balanced Scanned with CamScan Scanned with CamScanner #° A) Unbalanced Vane Pump : a) The rotor wi . thesutes ome hea slots is supplied to the driving shaft and rotates inside the mate with ) Centr 5 bom wre keoe he sans bat against the surface of the cam ring ieee Volume Increases between the rotor and the cam ring. expansion causes the reduction of pressure. €) This is suction process which causes the fluld to flow through the second half revolution. f)_ Surface of the cam ring pushes the vanes back into their slots and trapped volume is reduced. B) Balanced Vane Pump :- 8) Abalanced vane pump is the one that has two inlet and two outlet ports, diametrically opposite to each other. b) Thus the pressure ports are opposite to each other and a complete hydraulic balance is achieved. ©) One disadvantage of balanced vane pump is that it cannot be designed as a variable displacement unit. Instead of having a circular cam ring a'balanced designed vane pump has an elliptical housing which forms two separate pumping chambers on opposite sides of the rotor. d) This eliminates the bearing side lozds and thus permits higher operating pressure. Motor is used to drive the vane pump. Two pressure gauges ae used. One is attached to suction side and other Is attached to delivery side, Rotameter is used to measure the discharge. Filters and strainers are used for filtering ‘two relief valves : one for protecting the pump and the other for regulation of load. i EXPERIMENTAL SPECIFICATIONS :- 1) Motor: 2 HP 4) Pressure range : 0 to 50 bar 2) Speed : 1440 rpm 5) Oilused : ENCLO6B 3) Capacity :5 LPM > CALCULATIONS :- Step 1) Convert the discharge measured In LPM to m?/s : inte = © in m/s Scanned with CamScan Scanned with CamScanner ot ‘step 2) Calculate the output power : ‘Output power = (P: ~ Pi) x 10" x 9 x Step 3) Calculate the efficiency : Efficrency (n) = SES#E=T « 100 + GRAPHS = 1) Outeut power versus SP [ve (Ps— Pill 2) Ducharge versus SP fhe.
