ORDER

During the pre-budget discussion with the Finance Minister, it was suggested that the Universities
may submit a constructive proposal for improvement in the academic and non academic areas, to get
a higher NAAC grade, accordingly as per the reference cited 1st, it was requested to submit a detailed
proposal with realistic projections on post doctoral fellowships in the identified areas in a range of 30-
50 members.

As per the reference cited 2 nd, the Vice Chancellor's Office had forwarded the draft guidelines for
the award of Post Doctoral Fellowship in the University Teaching Departments of the University of
Calicut, with orders of the Vice Chancellor to place the same before the next Syndicate for
consideration.

As per the reference cited 3 rd, the Syndicate held on 22.09.2021, vide item No. 2021.830*
considered the guidelines for the award of Post Doctoral Fellowship in the University Teaching
Departments and approved the same with the following modifications.
1. In the objective part the word 'Humanities' is modified as 'Humanities (including Language and
Literature)

2. In para 6, the statement regarding maternity leave (women candidates .......tenure of this award) is
corrected as 'maternity leave will be granted in accordance with the existing practices'.

3. In para 8, the sentence 'the Vice Chancellor reserves.......any reason' is modified as 'the Vice
Chancellor reserves the right to withdraw / cancel the award citing specific reasons'.

As per the reference cited 4 th, the Vice Chancellor has ordered to implement the above resolution of
the Syndicate. Therefore , the resolution of the Syndicate held on 22.09.2021, vide item No.
2021.830* is thus implemented.

The Modified guideline and Application form ( Annexure-1) for post doctoral fellowship are attached
herewith.

Orders are issued accordingly.

GUIDELINES FOR POST DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN THE TEACHING
DEPARTMENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALICUT

lntroduction:
Objective - The objective of this award is to provide an opportunity to carry out the advanced
studies and research in science, humanities ( Including Language and Literature ) and social
sciences. The candidate should not be more than 35 years of age as on 1st July of the year of
application. The total duration of the fellowship is two years. There shall be reservation for SC/ST/
OBC/Physically Handicapped candidates as per provision of the Government of Kerala from time
to time.

1. 55% of marks at PG level in case of general / open category, while for reserved category
candidates, 50% at PG level respectively.
2. Age up to 35 years for the candidates belonging to general / open category and that will be
40 years for reserved category.Only Ph.D. awarded candidates will be eligible for the award
of Post Doctoral Fellowship. Applicant should have Ph.D degree awarded within three years
of the date of submission of application.
3. Target Group: candidates with Ph.D. degrees and an aptitude for research.
4. Eligibility: The candidate must have a doctorate degree in the relevant subject preferably
with published research work to their credit. ln case of general / open category, 55% of
marks at PG level. For reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/PH) candidates,50% at PG level.
The upper age limit for applicants is 35 years for the candidates belonging to general / open
category and 40 years for SC/ST/OBC/PH, as on 1st July on the year of application.
5. Nature of Assistance available under the scheme - one post doctoral fellowship will be
awarded each year in each regular teaching department. The tenure of the award is two years
with no provision for further extension. The financial assistance available under the scheme
is as follows:
Fellowship @ Rs.32,000/-p.m. After 1 year @ Rs. 35,000/- p.m
Contingency @Rs.25,0001p.a. for two years.
6. Leave: Leave for maximum period of 30 days in a year in addition to public holidays may be
taken by the Post-Doctoral Fellow with the approval of the Mentor/supervising teacher and
the Head of the Department. However, they are not entitled to any other vacations.Leave due
during a year cannot be carried over to the next year. Maternity leave will be granted in
accordance with the existing practices. Male fellows with less than two surviving children
are entitled for 15 days paternity leave. The fellow in special cases may be allowed by the
vice Chancellor leave without fellowship and contingency for a period not exceeding three
months during the tenure of award on the recommendation of the Head of department of the
institution concerned. The period of leave without fellowship will be counted towards the
tenure.
7. Procedure for applying for the scheme - The candidates fulfilling the eligibility conditions
are required to apply against the advertisement to be published by the University every year
in the prescribed format (Annexure-l) The selections would be made with the help of an
Expert Committee constituted by the Vice Chancellor. The Mentor/supervising teacher
should be an approved research guide of the University of Calicut.
8. Procedure for Approval by the University of Calicut - The applications received will be
scrutinised by the screening committee, Later, the short listed candidates will be called to
appear before the selection committee, constituted by the Vice chancellor. The decision of
the Committee will be final. The Vice Chancellor reserves the right to withdraw/cancel the
award citing specific reasons.
9. Release of fellowship by the University - On receipt of Joining Report of the fellow, the
candidate can avail the fellowship by submitting the monthly fellowship bill along with the
monthly progress report duly recommended by the Supervising teacher/Mentor and the Head
of the Department together with required documents. On completion of the award, an
audited utilisation certificate is to be submitted.
10.Procedure for monitoring the Progress of the Scheme - The research associate shall submit,
through the senior faculty member with whom he/she is working and the head of the
department/university, a half-yearly report on the progress of his/her research work .On
completion of the award, he/she will submit to the University a comprehensive report and a
copy of his/her published work, if any, and an abstract of the research work in about 500
words.
11.The fellow may assist the Department in academic activities (Lab/Tutorial/Remedial
Coaching/Seminars) upto a maximum of four hours per week.
12.lf the candidate wishes to leave the associateship before the end of the tenure, it should be
done with prior approval of the university as per the requirements of the undertaking given
by the associate. An annual progress report of the research work done by the associate may
be examined by a departmental research committee constituted by the Vice Chancellor. ln
case the progress of the work is found unsatisfactory, the award may be terminated by the
university at any time during the tenure of the award. The decision of the university in this
regard will be final. The associate shall not accept or hold any appointment, paid or
otherwise, or receive any emoluments, salary, stipend, etc. from any other source during the
tenure of the award. However, no extension is permissible beyond the total period of two
years, at the end of which period the awardee ceases to be a research associate with
immediate effect.
13.Cancellation of Award: The fellowship is liable to cancellation, in case of: Misconduct.
Unsatisfactory progress of research work.Candidate is later found ineligible.
