7. PROCEDURE
7.1 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE OF DEEP WELL GROUND BED
The major steps involved in the installation of a deep anode system include drilling the hole, placing
the anodes in the hole, pumping the backfill into place and completing the installation to the surface.
The drilling and installation team shall make sure that all deep well borehole ground bed
components such as, MMO anode, coke breeze, vent pipe, anode centralizers etc. are available
at site prior to commencing drilling to avoid possible delays.

The first step of the installation process involves drilling the hole. The exact location of the deep
well borehole ground bed shall be marked on site as per the appropriate layout drawing and cable
routing of well casing. Prior to any drilling or other excavation works, the chosen site shall be
thoroughly surveyed to ensure that there are no underground facilities at the location of the ground
bed.
A suitable drilling rig shall be mobilized to site and positioned at the ground bed location. Depending
upon the specific geology, the drilling operator shall drill a hole with air or mud circulation. If the
drilling equipment is undersized for the diameter and depth of hole to be drilled, the probability of
having hole problems will increase significantly. Therefore, an investigation of the drilling
equipment shall be checked prior to construction activity. In order to minimize installation problems,
the hole needs to be straight, stable and free of obstructions or constrictions.
An 8” diameter hole shall be drilled using the drilling rig. The depth of the borehole shall be drilled
to a depth 3 to 5 m deeper than the proposed total depth of the borehole column. This will insure
that in the event of a partial collapse of the borehole the ground bed materials can be installed
smoothly to the required depth.
There are two primary types of tests performed during the drilling process to provide decision
making data. Both tests are used to estimate formation resistivity.
• The first test involves measurement of the resistivity of the cuttings screened from the fluid
circulation steam. The cuttings are accumulated and compacted tightly into a soil box. The
test procedure involves calculating the resistance of the sample taken at every 10 m depth
between the potential pins and determining the resistivity from the soil box using Wenner
4 pin method.
NC-200 ERAWIN FIELD EPF PHASE- I
(PLAN B)
CONTRACT NO: ENG052-20ERW

• The second test that may be performed during the drilling process to help determine the
water resistance is a drill stem-to-earth resistance. This test is usually conducted when
the top of the drill stem has reached the bottom of its travel distance just before adding
another length on the surface should be positioned for maximum test depth before the first
test measurement.

7.1.1 Casing Placement

Should there is a presence of cavity; a scrap steel casing may be required for the installation.
Casings is used to prevent the entrance of surface waters, to seal environmentally sensitive zones,
to stabilize unconsolidated formations during installation and to provide a more controlled
environment for the MMO anodes. Whatever the specific purpose of the casing, it should be placed
in the hole before any of the other components.
The diameter of steel casing shall be 8”. The maximum thickness of the casing pipe shall be 6mm
to facilitate the welding of pipes. The individual pipe length shall be 6 m to facilitate the
transportation and lowering of pipes. Pipes are generally available in 11-12 m lengths and same
may be used if the crane at the site has a longer boom to accommodate this length and pipes can
be transported without any problem.
The ends of the pipe shall be machined so that welding can be done at site. As the casing string
at the bottom is sealed with concrete before installation, weight must be added to the casing to
overcome the buoyancy effects of the drilling mud in the hole. This is generally accomplished by
pumping the drilling fluids into the casing string as it is pushed into place. Once the casing string
is locked into place in the hole, the drilling fluids are cleaned from inside the casing by washing
with water. However, the experienced drilling company can opt their own methods to install the
casing without any failure.

As sealed casing strings are installed, the placement of the backfill on the inside and outside of the
casing has to take place in two different operations. Care must be exercised to avoid significant
differential pressures across the casing walls capable of bursting the casing. One method of
reducing the differential pressures is to maintain heavy drilling mud on the opposite side of the
casing wall from the backfill pumping operation.

7.1.2 Drill Stem Resistance Test

1. The Drill stem resistance shall be measured every 6m depth drill in progress. That is to
determine the conductance of the ground bed layers using 3 pin method.
2. Resistance shall be measured using earth resistance meter.
3. Drill stem shall be considered as the 1st pin (C1).
4. Fix the second pin (P2) at 62% of the drilled depth and third pin (C2) at 100% of the total
drilled depth.
5. Put the earth resistance meter in 3 pole.
NC-200 ERAWIN FIELD EPF PHASE- I
(PLAN B)
CONTRACT NO: ENG052-20ERW

6. The above said process shall continue still the whole drilling complete.
7. Record the measured readings in field record#BSST-QAQC-CPJ212510-008FR-1.

7.1.3 Anode Placement

Before carbon backfill is placed around the anodes, the anodes should be properly located within
the discharge zone (Active zone). Once each anode depth has been determined, the anode lead
wire should be marked to ensure proper placement. The anode tail cables and vent pipe shall be
tied to polypropylene rope (with end weight at the bottom) using cable ties at every 1 m. The anodes
should be lowered with help of polypropylene rope into position after attachment of centralizers
until the end weight touches the bottom of the borehole.
The primary gases that may be discharged by a deep anode system are oxygen, chlorine, carbon
monoxide, or carbon dioxide. These gases are all possible anodic reaction products. In the
quantities generated by deep anode systems, the gases can be safely vented to the atmosphere
by observing a few precautions. Due to the potential safety hazards involved, the gases should not
be allowed to concentrate in closed spaces. Therefore, deep anode venting should ensure release
to the atmosphere rather than to confined spaces. The venting system should be at a fixed distance
from the anode discharge surfaces but not contacting the anode surface directly. This can be
accomplished by inserting fixed centralizers between the anodes and the vent.
7.1.4 Completion
After the backfill pumping process, a minimum of eight hours is recommended to allow settling
before confirming the level of carbon backfill within the system. If additional backfill is required to
bring the level up to design, it may be poured slowly into the top of the hole or pumped depending
upon the additional quantity required. If the additional backfill is to be pumped, the pumping pipe
can be returned to the hole to stopping just above the current backfill level, and additional material
pumped into the hole. Care should be exercised in lowering the pumping pipe to avoid damage to
the anode leads.
Very carefully start pumping the coke breeze in a slurry form. Care shall be taken while pumping
from damaging the anodes or vent pipe. Slurry shall be pumped from inside by placing the pumping
hose at the inside of the well. Slurry should be pumped to a height (as per design) to have the
active anode column of required length as specified in the design report. Once the above activities
are completed, retrieve the pumping hose from the well and casing pipe shall be secured in
concrete foundation. Check the coke breeze level after setting. Anode tail cables shall be fed
through the conduit in the head work and secured ready for connection in to the anode junction
box. The cables shall be tied on a support bar with slack (to avoid load on cables) & the cable shall
be routed through the cable exit in the steel and PVC casing for onward routing and connection in
the anode junction box.
NC-200 ERAWIN FIELD EPF PHASE- I
(PLAN B)
CONTRACT NO: ENG052-20ERW

All the anode tail cables shall be properly marked and tagged. A minimum waiting period of 24
hours after the final pumping is recommended to allow carbon backfill settling before final the
completion of hole.
Final completion of the deep anode system is accomplished by sealing the top portion of the hole
to prevent the entrance of surface groundwater. One easy method of sealing the upper portion of
a deep anode system involves pouring dry bentonite pellets or the drilled natural into the hole from
the surface.
The surface casing pipe shall be secured in concrete foundation and the anode tail cables shall be
brought to the anode junction box and terminate as shown in the installation drawing# ENG052-
20ERW PPFU001-B18-0004.
After the anodes are lowered into the bore hole and backfilling a resistance measurement should
be recorded between the anode tail cable and earth. Resistance shall be calculated by 3pin
method. Anode shall be considered as the first pin and fix the second and third pins at distances
from the anode and as recommended by the manufacturer of resistivity meter or as described
below.

1. Connect C1 & P1 to the anode.

2. Fix the second pin (P2) at 62% of the depth of bore hole.
3. Fix the third pin (C2) at a distance equal to the depth of bore hole.
4. Take the reading
Generally the reading shall be less than 1ohm for low resistive areas, but the reading may vary
according to the resistivity of the location. For high resistive areas higher values expected.
All the anode tail cables shall be properly marked and tagged, and all the reading/observation shall
be recorded. # BSST-QAQC-CPJ212510-015FR-1.
