* Identify the problem sound: /ð/
I. PRESENT THE SOUND
1. Lead-in and introduce the sound
T shows the picture of some children at the airport with their mother.
T: (points at the children) Where are they?
Ss: They are at the airport.
T: Who are they with?
Ss: They are with their mother.
T: That’s right. They are at the airport with their mother. Today, we’re going to learn
how to pronounce the sound /ð/.
2. Say the sound alone: /ð/
3. Say the sound in words in various positions: the, mother, with
4. Conduct choral repetition
5. Conduct individual repetition
6. Explain how to make the sound
To make the sound /ð/, put your tongue behind your upper teeth. Then, slowly let air out.
Remember to use your voice.

II. PRACTICE THE SOUND

Oral practice
1. Say the sound alone: /ð/
2. Say the sound in words in various positions: the, mother, with
3. Say the sound in phrases: the sky today, a kind mother, with an umbrella
4. Say the sound in sentences:

We have a kind mother.
She hides us from the rain with an umbrella.

2.
. Decide the intonation pattern, then mark with arrow.
. Decide stressed syllables and mark them by underlining.
. Divide sentence into small sections and give key transcriptions.
. Conduct repetition from end towards beginning.
Then suddenly | thirty-three and half hours | after he left New York, | his plane flew over |
the Eiffel Tower | in Paris. ↘

3. Identify the structure: Relative clause: NP + who + V + …

I. PRESENTATION
1. Show a picture and give an example
T shows a picture of a farmer planting trees.
T: What is her job?
Ss: She’s a farmer.
T: And what does she do?
Ss: She plants trees.
T: Right. So you can say: She is a farmer who plants trees. (*)
2. Give a model and ask the class to repeat sentence (*)
3. Ask individual Ss to repeat sentence (*)
4. Write sentence (*) on the board
5. Explain how the structure is formed
To make a relative clause like this, you use “who” or “which” after a noun phrase.
After “who” or “which”, you use a tensed verb.
6. Ask the class to copy the sentence
7. Give other examples:
T: (show another picture) Look. This is a pilot. He is flying across the ocean. So, what
can we say about him? He’s a pilot who…?
Ss: He’s a pilot who is flying across the ocean.
T: Good.
II. PRACTICE
Meaningful practice: Get Ss to say real things about themselves.
Say true sentences about yourself, using relative clause.
Ex: mother
→ I have a mother who cooks meals for me.
a) father
b) cousin
c) teacher
d) friend

4.
1. Lead-in and introduce the text
Technique: picture + question
T shows photos of 5 means of transport: bus, car, train, ship, plane.
Look at the photos and answer the following questions.
a) Which is the fastest mode of transport?
b) Have you ever travelled by this mode of transport?
c) Is it easy or difficult to control this mode of transport?
After that, T introduces the text.
T: Today, we’re going to read a text about a pilot who tried to fly a plane from America to
Europe.
2. Guiding question
Read the text and answer the following question: Was Lindbergh able to fly from
America to Europe?
5. * Technique: Using comprehension questions
Read the text and answer the following questions.
1. What was the prize for flying from America to Europe?
2. Why did people think the flying journey was impossible?
3. Which countries did Lindbergh fly from and to?
4. What problems did Lindbergh face on his journey?
5. How long did Lindbergh’s journey take?
* Questioning strategies:
. Question 1, 3, 5: These are fairly easy questions, suitable for weaker Ss. T asks the
question, then choose one student to answer.
. Question 2, 4: These are more difficult questions, suitable for good Ss. T asks a question
and let Ss raise their hand if they think they know the answer.

6. Activity type: Role-play + Interview

T: Now, work in pairs. Imagine that one of you is a pilot who has successfully flown from
America to Europe. The other is an interviewer from a TV channel. The interviewer,
please ask the pilot some questions about their plane journey. The pilot, please answer the
interviewer.
After 5 minutes, T invites some pilots to go in front of the class. The interviewers raise
their hand if they want to ask any pilots here a question. The pilot being asked will
answer the question.
