3-5. Supply Gas Line

3-5-1. Line Preparation

For ND-500, you need to prepare O2 gas for ozone generation and as dry gas. The gas
line prepared for the electric furnace will be used for O2 gas by branching it, so there is
no need to prepare new gas supply lines.

CAUTION Gas to use

Make adjustment so that the pressure of Ar gas is equal to that of O2 gas.
Adjust the setting pressure within the range of 0.3±0.1 MPa.
If the setting pressure is out of the range of 0.3±0.1 MPa, the unit may not
operate correctly or it may break.
Prepare O2 gas with a purity of 99.7% or greater.
Prepare gas with a cylinder of 7 m3 or more capacity.

POINT Impurities from lines

After connecting new lines or changing or reconnecting lines, large
volumes of impurities may get into them.
Thoroughly purge them before use.

ND-500 (NSX-5000)
3-4 Installation

POINT Gas grades

Impurities in general-grade gas may affect measurement because the
container is used repeatedly and the history of gas is left therein. This
problem can be avoided by using high-purity, high-grade gas in a dedicated
container. However, doing so does not eliminate impurities.

ND-500 (NSX-5000)
Installation 3-5

3-5-2. Line Connection

Measurement 4-1

Section 4: Measurement
This section describes the principle and parameters for nitrogen measurement with the
ND-500 unit. For operation as a system, read the operation manual. Measurement with
the acid gas removal set is also described.

4-1. Measurement Principle (Vertical Furnace)

This section describes the sulfur measurement principle for the vertical furnace. Fig. 4-1
is the measurement principle diagram using the vertical furnace.
Argon gas whose flow is controlled by the mass flow controller is used as the carrier gas.
A sample is injected by the argon carrier gas into a high-temperature (600 to 1100
degrees Celsius) combustion tube at a constant rate. Most of the nitrogen compound in
the sample changes into NO through pyrolysis and combustion oxidation by O2 gas
supplied to the outer combustion tube.
After sample injection, the change valve changes the gases of the inner and outer
combustion tubes to completely combust the sample in the inner combustion tube with
O2 gas.
Generated NO passes through the gas tube dryer to remove moisture and reacts with
ozone in the cell. Then, the following oxidation reaction occurs and an emission of 590
to 2500 nm is observed.
NO + O3 → NO2 + O2 + h
This emitted light is received by the photomultiplier tube (PMT) and AREA value is
obtained. Using the relation between the area value and the absolute volume
(calibration curve) obtained from calibration curve solutions, the nitrogen content of the
sample is calculated.

4-2. Cautions at Nitrogen Measurement

Due to the detection principle, any substance other than NO that reacts with ozone to
generate chemiluminescence gives positive interference and any substance that
removes excitation energy from excited NO2 gives negative interference.

(1) Carbonyl compounds of iron and nickel react with ozone to generate
chemiluminescence, which gives positive interference. However, it is unlikely that
these substances exist in sample gas after combustion. Therefore, there are no
practical problems.

(2) Olefins (such as ethylene and trimethyl ethylene) and sulfide compounds (such as
dimethyl sulfide and hydrogen sulfide) react with ozone to generate
chemiluminescence, which gives positive interference. However, the wavelengths
of these substances are different from the wavelength of chemiluminescence
caused by NO and the ND-500 unit uses optical filters to detect only arbitrary
wavelengths. Therefore, the wavelengths of these substances are not detected
basically.

(3) A sample that contains chlorine produces chlorine gas through combustion and
may give positive interference. It is necessary to use the acid gas removal set to
trap chlorine gas.

(4) Moisture in sample gas gives negative interference. This system uses a gas tube
dryer to remove moisture from the sample gas after combustion.

(5) Carbon dioxide in sample gas gives negative interference at a fixed rate if the
concentration is stable. However, by the reduced pressure method, the pressure
within the chemiluminescence cell is reduced and intervention in molecules is
decreased. Therefore, the negative interference of carbon dioxide can be
decreased to an irrelevant level.

In addition, since chemiluminescence generated by the reaction of NO with ozone is

detected, nitrogen compounds whose main component after pyrolysis is N2 (such as
azo compounds and hydrazine compounds) cannot be measured accurately.

4-3. Platinum Catalyst Oxidation Treatment

To use new platinum catalyst, oxidation treatment needs to be done before use for
measurement. Fill it into the combustion tube, and do oxidation treatment by the
following procedure.

CAUTION Disconnection of lower lines

from the combustion tube outlet
When oxidizing the platinum catalyst, be sure to remove the female ball
joint or the trap tube for combustion tube bottom. Set a beaker under the
combustion tube outlet because moisture comes out of a new platinum
catalyst.
When a platinum catalyst is oxidized, acid gas may come out and
damage health. Always perform operation in a well-ventilated
environment.

(1) Fill new quartz wool and platinum catalyst into the combustion tube by referring to
the operation manual.

(2) Set the combustion tube by referring to the instruction manual of the electric
furnace.

(3) Without connecting the female ball joint 18 or trap tube 18 of the combustion
tube bottom, prebake the tube for about 5 hours with the following settings.
Electric furnace Inlet: 800 degrees Celsius, Outlet: 800 degrees Celsius, Ar gas:
300 mL/min, O2 gas: 300 mL/min

ND-500 (NSX-5000)
Measurement 4-5

4-4. Acid Gas Removal Set

The acid gas removal set is an apparatus designed to remove acid gas, which is an
interferer when a sample is combusted and nitrogen is detected by the ND-500 unit.
Use this set when measuring samples such as seawater samples and samples with
much sulfur content.

4-4-1. Preparations

This section describes preparations of the acid gas removal set for measurement. While
the temperature of the electric furnace has not risen, set the sample bottle between the
combustion tube and the dryer tube by referring to “3-9-1. Assembly of Sample Bottle”
and “3-9-2. Connection (Vertical Furnace)”. Make preparations before measurement by
the following procedure.

WARNING Hot electric furnace and

combustion tube
Never touch a hot electric furnace or combustion tube.
Doing so may cause burns. Never touch them.

4-4-2. Shutdown Operations

If the system is left with no gas flow to the electric furnace, the sodium hydrogen
carbonate solution in the sample bottle may flow backward. After measurement, perform
shutdown operations on the acid gas removal set by the following procedure.

(1) While gas is flowing to the electric furnace, remove the two fluororubber
connectors 6/3 connected to the sample bottle cap, and remove the sample bottle
from the sample bottle holder.

(2) Remove the sample bottle clamp and cap, and dispose of the sodium hydrogen
carbonate solution in the sample bottle.

(3) Wash the sample bottle and the tip of the sample bottle cap with tap water, and
then rinse them with pure water.

(4) Set the sample bottle cap and clamp to the empty sample bottle, set the sample
bottle on the sample bottle holder, and connect the two fluororubber connectors
6/3 to restore the original state. For details on connection, refer to “3-10-2.
Connection (Vertical Furnace)”.

(5) After checking that the sample bottle is empty, stop gas flow.

4-5-2. Parameters Set in a Schedule

This section describes ND-500 parameters which are set in a schedule. PMT sensitivity
and a detection mode can be set in a schedule every measurement step. The details of
PMT sensitivities and detection modes are as follows. Refer to the operation manual for
setting methods.
(1) PMT sensitivity
Select the sensitivity of the detector according to the concentration range for
measurement. “High sensitivity” is a setting for the measurement of trace range
and “Low sensitivity” is a setting for measurement of higher-concentration range. It
may be necessary to select not only the PMT sensitivity but also an appropriate
sample volume, depending on the concentration range. Table 4-3 shows PMT
sensitivity and sample volume settings. Further dilution may be necessary
because the optimal sample volume may vary depending on the unit configuration,
the sample matrix, and other factors. To measure gas, select an appropriate PMT
sensitivity and sample volume based on the absolute volume (nitrogen content).

Table 4-3. PMT Sensitivity and Sample Volume Settings

(2) Mode
To detect start and end points of signal processing, select “Auto” or “Timer”. When
measuring samples in a trace range, select “Timer” because the peak start and
end sometimes may not be detected automatically.
Auto: Peak is automatically detected by judging the start and end points based on
the slope of signal strength.
Timer: Peak is detected by processing signals with set start and end times.

POINT Mode setting

Use “Timer” for the measurement mode for low concentration sample
measurement, and “Auto” for high concentration sample measurement.
If the start and end of integration cannot be detected properly, set the
measurement mode to “Timer”.

7-2 Maintenance and Inspection

Check of the Condition of the Female Ball Joint (Nonaqueous Sample

Measurement)

Check the female ball joint φ18 for soot contamination caused by incomplete
combustion. If it is contaminated, wash the female ball joint φ18 as follows.

(1) Wipe off contamination on the female ball joint φ18 with absorbent cotton
moistened with toluene.

(2) Mix acetone with pure water in the proportion of one to ten to prepare washing
solution, and immerse the part in the solution for 12 hours or more.

(3) Thoroughly rinse the part with pure water and fully dry it.

Check of the Trap Tube of the Combustion Tube Bottom (Aqueous Sample
Measurement)

Visually check that water has not accumulated in the trap tube φ18 of the combustion
tube bottom and that the tube is not contaminated. If water has accumulated, dispose of
the water. Then, thoroughly rinse the part with pure water and fully dry it. If it is
contaminated, remove the contamination. Then, thoroughly rinse the part with pure
water and fully dry it.

Check of the Condition of the Gas Tube Dryer

The color of the inner tube of the gas tube dryer is translucent at the start of use.
However, it gradually turns brown as the number of measurements increases. If the
inner tubes are significantly discolored by incomplete combustion, they cannot be used
anymore. During daily inspection, visually check that the color of the inner tube of the
gas tube dryer has not turned dark brown or been significantly discolored. When it is
dark brown or significantly discolored, change the dryer with new one.
Also visually check that the inner tube of the gas tube dryer is not clogged. A clogged
inner tube may cause incomplete combustion. Change the dryer with new one.
Change the gas tube dryer as follows.

(1) Disconnect the φ6/4 two fluororesin tubes, 30 mm from the outlet and inlet of the
gas tube dryer.

(2) Disconnect the φ6/4 two quick joints from the gas tube dryer.

Maintenance and Inspection 7-11

The details of each periodical inspection item and maintenance are as follows.

Maintenance of the Combustion Tube and Filler

When measuring samples that contain much salt, such as seawater, maintain the
combustion tube and filler once in every two days. Since the maintenance frequency is
high, we recommend that you prepare two or more sets of combustion tubes and
platinum catalysts and use them alternately. The maintenance procedure is as follows.

(1) Take out the combustion tube from the electric furnace and remove the quartz
wool and platinum catalyst.

(2) Wash the combustion tube by brushing it with neutral detergent.

(3) Thoroughly rinse the combustion tube with tap water and then pure water and fully
dry it.

(4) Change or regenerate the platinum catalyst by referring to “7-2. Periodical

Inspection and Maintenance”. Fill new quartz wool.

Washing of the Female Ball Joint (Nonaqueous Sample Measurement)

Wash the female ball joint φ18 every month as follows.

(1) Mix acetone with pure water in the proportion of one to ten to prepare washing
solution, and wash the female ball joint φ18.

(2) Thoroughly rinse the part with pure water and fully dry it.

Washing of the Trap Tube of the Combustion Tube Bottom (Aqueous Sample
Measurement)

Wash the trap tube φ18 of the combustion tube bottom every month as follows.

(1) Wash the trap tube φ18 of the combustion tube bottom with tap water.

(2) Thoroughly rinse the part with pure water and fully dry it.
