Transport Ticketing Central & Eastern Europe Conference,

8-9th October 2014

Warsaw

Creating an
open ticketing architecture:
a transport authority‘s perspective
MSc Dušan Zalar,
Ministry for Infrastructure and Spatial Planning,
Republic of Slovenia
Introduction
• Public transport authorities and public transport
operators around globe follow the innovations in
transport ticketing for different reasons. This reasons
are mainly depend on the development stage and the
ability to adapt to new technology options.

• In many cases this ability is limited by technological

and supplier lock-in as well as by limited funds.

• Slovenian case in this respect is rather the rule than

the exception.

Existing ticketing strategy:
Countrywide single ticket introduction
• In 2007 Slovenia launched an Integration of public
transport project. The project is EU funded and is
expected to be completed at the end of 2015

• The main goal of the project is to increase the use of

public transport through
– harmonization of time tables,
– harmonization of fares and
– introduction of single ticket

• Public tender "The introduction of single ticket in

Republic of Slovenia" is closed

• Decision will be taken soon

7
Existing ticketing strategy:
Countrywide single ticket introduction
• The same ticketing media will be accepted by all public transport
operators and all modes of public transport - train, intercity bus
and city bus regardless of public transport authority- local or
central
• A simple ticketing scheme will be developed for the single ticket
(common platform, security and data model) which will be
prescribed by central government, all operators will be required to
use it
• MiFare DESFire EV1 contactless smart card is prescribed national
ticketing media standard
• Single ticket will support existing data model and new prescribed
common data model (dual data model)
• Single ticket will support single/multiple ride and season ticket
type including subsidized student season ticket type (priority)
8
Existing ticketing strategy:
Countrywide single ticket introduction
• Common data/security model prescribed by central government
(CG) will be public
• Single ticket will operate in parallel with exisiting tickets
• Parallel operation enable gradual implementation of ticket types

existing common
data data
model model
(PTO) (CG)

9
Ticketing strategy alignment
to follow the future trends
• Implementing open ticketing architecture

– Open programming interfaces (internal - between modules,

external - between systems)
– Open data (ridership data - in relation with network data from
passenger information system)
– Open internal standards (common data/security model)

• Integration of
– transport ticketing system and
– passenger information system

10
Updated ticketing strategy:
Improve passenger experience
• The most of the passengers are students

• Student season ticket is the most common ticket

• Students season tickets are subsidized by central or

local government

11
Manage passenger experience
through journey phases
JOURNEY PHASE MEASURE
search for journey GIS implementation of integrated passenger information
information (PI) portal (transport network, time tables)
plan the journey Implementation of journey planner as a part of integrated
PI portal (transport network, door to door)
purchase the ticket Implementation of on-line application form for
subsidization of student tickets and on-line ticket renewal
wait for transport service Implementation of real time passenger information as a
part of integrated PI portal (delays, …)
enter into transport X
vehicle at the origin
travel from origin to Implementation of real time passenger information as a
destination part of integrated PI portal (delays, …)
exit from transport X
vehicle at the destination

12
Search for journey information
• Google Transit will be used as an integrated passenger
information portal
• For each station or stop, a station/stop time table or a
line time table can be found
• All transport operators will be required to use Google
Transit in addition to their own passenger information
portals
• Some operators already use the Google Transit
• Transport network will be standardized countrywide
(station and stops numbering and naming)

13
Plan the journey
• Google Transit will be used for journey plannig

• Journey planner has two options, origin and/or

destination can be station/stop or address

• Information about available tickets (single ride and

season ticket) and prices (regular and subsidized) will
be available for each journey

14
Purchase the ticket
• Single on-line application form will be implemented for
– subsidized student season ticket and
– subsidized student season ticket renewal

• Ticketing system will be linked to

– central register of the participants of education (CEUVlZ) and
– register of students and graduates

• Approval or refusal of subsidization will be automatic

15
Wait for transport service
Travel from origin to destination
• Google transit will be used for real time passenger
information

• For each line fluctuations in the timetable will be

avalilable (arrival time, delay time)

• Alerts for stations and lines (station closed, line not in

operation, …)
