Building dashboard for the Analysis of the Belly Capacity available on

different routes

Course Project Report

Introduction
In my 2+ years of Experience in GMR Group of Companies , I had an exposure to various
sectors of the their businesses namely, Aviation, Aerospace Engineering, Hospitality and
Infrastructure Development Sector having a multi-dimensional and Multi- Functional
exposure in legal, HR, Taxation, Accounting, Implementing the compliance related IT Tools.

Every Organisation faces some hesitation from its Human Resource/ Employees for
implementing a new policy or a new Standard Operating procedure or Business process
management or such other Technology as may be required for the business for better analysis
of Organisational data and Financial Information. This Course project will highlight certain
issues/challenges and will provide some recommendation by the end of each course project
for each subject in its conclusion part which shall be beneficial for the organisation upon its
implementation.

The source of revenue for the Airline and the Airport Operator is Passenger and Cargo. While
choosing a route, Airline often considers not only the Passenger number but also the Cargo
Volume. The airlines keep complaining that they are not getting enough loads on some routes
for their belly which is one of the major sources of revenue for the Airlines.

Hyderabad Airport has seen its load getting leaked out to other peer airports form its
catchment. To overcome this challenge it is important to first study the Capacity available on
different routes and its current utilization.

Project Objective

To get the better understanding of the Capacity available across the routes, we need to create
a customizable Capacity Model dashboard using data available in the MIS.

In my report I will create a customizable framework showing the market-level data and
airline level data too. Similarly I will show analysis for the top 20 routes (domestic and
international separately) and an analysis such as the capacity between metro to metro vs.
metro to non-metro on domestic routes and country pairs, along with India and regions on
International routes.
1. Information Collection & Analysis

Sources of data collection

 Aero Commercial Division (staff) of GHIAL – Hyderabad;
 Non- Aero Commercial Division (staff) of GHIAL – Hyderabad;
 Backend Data Base Management System;
 IATA Websites
 Ministry of Civil Aviation(MoCA Websites)
 Information and records maintained by DGCA;
 Reports published by various external sources.

Formats Used

Excel sheet with DROPDOWN, VLOOKUP, SUMIFS etc., and Functions for
compilation and preparation of the management information system.

Key Market Consideration

 The Primary data is the data collected is through the database maintained by the
Organisation under its Aero Commercial division

 The collection and Analysis of such primary and secondary data would help in greater
presentation of the information’s by way of comparative study amongst different Airports
in India and Abroad at different locations for domestic and International routes.

 The data collected from the above mentioned sources will be analysed using quantitative
techniques such as statistical analysis through the Management Information System
(MIS) in order to take robust decision.

Data collected from the following Persons

 Mr. Sahil Goel – Manager Strategic Planning Group- GHIAL;
 Mr. G. Kranti – Manager at CEO Office- GHIAL

Data Analysis
The data we could find was for one week (Sheet 3: Master Data) and then we extrapolated it
for the whole year.

For Capacity = no. of frequency*2(The capacity would be twice for both import and
export)*Capacity of Aircraft type*Equivalent of week (forecasting for one year)

Assumptions (Sheet 4: Assumption Sheets)

Assuming the data is for summer schedule and it’s operating at 100% Number of weeks for
operations in one FY/AY

No. of weeks Ratio Using historical data

Summer Schedule 26 90 The ratio between summer
Winter Schedule 29 100 and winter schedule can be
Equivalent weeks for a Year 55 determined

Findings
We were able to build a dashboard which can be used in all our business cases.
For example if we want to check the load between the Hyderabad and Dubai, we can easily
find by selecting our criteria from the drop down in Excel. (Sheet 1: Output 2)

Select the desired criteria from the drop down

Conclusion
I have created a customizable Capacity Model dashboard using data available. With help of
this dashboard we can get better understanding of the Capacity available across the routes.

Similarly I have shown an analysis for the top 20 routes (domestic and international
separately) and have also analysed the capacity between metro to metro vs. metro to non-
metro on domestic routes and country pairs, along with India and regions on International
routes.

With the help of this analysis, we can easily engage with all our stakeholders; Agent, Freight
Forwarders and Airlines to come up with a strategic business development plan to bring the
load from the catchment and beyond fulfil these available capacities.

It will also help the Cargo team to develop new cargo products which will be a good source
of revenue for the Airport.
