Need A Push
It is time to bowl! You are going to create your very own bowling game and test the
effects of pushes and pulls on light, heavy, and different-shaped objects.
I Wonder
How can I describe the effects of pushes and pulls?
I Predict
Explain what type of object will be best to slide or roll along the ground and knock
down the water bottles.
I Need
- Six water bottles half-filled with water (to use as bowling pins)
- Four objects that are different shapes and weights (tennis ball, wooden block,
large box, can of soup, etc.)
I Explore
1. Set up your six water bottles. Set them in a
formation so that there are three in the back, with two
in the next row, and then finally one water bottle in
the front.
2. Take ten steps back from your water bottles. Make sure the space in between you
and the water bottles is clear and that nothing is in the way.
3. Select your first object. Roll or slide it toward the bottles. Observe if it knocks down
any water bottles. Record your observations in the “I Record” section.
Name: Date:
4. Select your second object. Roll or slide it toward the bottles. Observe if it knocks
down any water bottles. Record your observations in the “I Record” section.
5. Select your third object. Roll or slide it toward the bottles. Observe if it knocks down
any water bottles. Record your observations in the “I Record” section.
6. Select your fourth object. Roll or slide it toward the bottles. Observe if it knocks down
any water bottles. Record your observations in the “I Record” section.
I Record
Draw what happened when you rolled or slid each object toward the bottles. Then,
write whether the object you used was small or big and heavy or light.

Object Four
I Know
Describe which object worked the best to both roll/slide toward the bottles and knock
the most bottles over. Explain why you think it worked best.
