What is case study?

A case study is an in-depth, detailed examination of a particular case (or cases) within a real-world
context. It is a detailed examination of a particular subject, such as a person, group, event, organization,
or phenomenon. It involves gathering and analyzing qualitative and/or quantitative data to provide a
comprehensive understanding of the subject and its context.

Case studies are commonly used in various fields, including business, psychology, education, medicine,
and more. They often involve real-life situations and aim to explore complexities, patterns, and
relationships within the subject matter.

For example, case studies in medicine may focus on an individual patient or ailment; case studies in
business might cover a particular firm's strategy or a broader market; similarly, case studies in politics
can range from a narrow happening over time like the operations of a specific political campaign, to an
enormous undertaking like world war, or more often the policy analysis of real-world problems affecting
multiple stakeholders.

Generally, a case study can highlight nearly any individual, group, organization, event, belief system, or
action. A case study does not necessarily have to be one observation (N=1), but may include many
observations (one or multiple individuals and entities across multiple time periods, all within the same
case study). Research projects involving numerous cases are frequently called cross-case research,
whereas a study of a single case is called within-case research.

What is the purpose of case study?


The general purpose of a case study is to:
→ describe an individual situation (case), e.g. a person, business, organization, or institution, in detail;
→ identify the key issues of the case (your assignment question should tell you what to focus on);
→ analyses the case using relevant theoretical concepts from your unit or discipline;
→ recommend a course of action for that particular case (particularly for problem-solving case studies).

As with reports, there are two major kinds of case studies: problem-solving case studies and descriptive
case studies.

Problem-solving case studies


Problem-solving case studies are used to investigate a problem or situation in a particular individual or
group, and recommend a solution to the problem based on analysis and theory.
