1 Scope
This Airbus Process Specification defines the engineering requirements for manufacturing and marking of
labels by the digital printing process.
This specification does not give detailed instructions; these are given in the Process Instructions (e.g. AIPI)
and the work Instructions.
This specification shall not be used as an inspection document.
It shall be applied when mentioned in the relevant standard, material specification or definition dossier.
2 Normative References
This Airbus Standard incorporates by dated or undated reference provisions from other publications. All
normative references cited at the appropriate places in the text are listed hereafter. For dated references,
subsequent amendments to or revisions of any these publications apply to this Airbus Standard only when
incorporated in it by amendment of revision. For undated references, the latest issue of the publication referred
to shall be applied.
3.1 Definition
Adhesive tape
An adhesive tape is a carrier material coated with an adhesive. The adhesive can be applied on one or on
both sides (double-faced application) of the carrier material. A distinction is made between pressure sensitive
adhesive and heat activated adhesive. An adhesive tape without carrier is called transfer tape.
Carrier
A carrier is a flat shaped material, which carries the adhesive and can consist of different materials (foils, fabric,
etc.). The carrier can be reinforced with e.g. filaments.
Digital printing
The ink is applied directly on a label material via a digital printer.
Ink
Composite material containing colorants, functional components, vehicle and additives
Manufacturer
The company or organization responsible for producing the part against an Airbus drawing.
Manufacturing shop
The specific workshop intended for manufacture to this process specification.

Printing device
A printing device produces hard copy output or prints on media such as paper from digital electronic
documents.
Process Instruction
A document which specifies all of the essential process and quality requirements for a specific manufacturing
process. It is a complete detailed in house process instruction and shall be used in conjunction with the
drawing and relevant Airbus Process Specification.
Product-O-sample
A product-O-Sample is product sample accepted and signed by the Airbus design department. It is the only
standard for acceptance or rejection of a product with regard to color and.
Rework
Rework means the removal of production and assembly related non-conformances with the aim of reaching
the required component condition defined in the engineering documents.
Storage life
The maximum period of time that the material may be used when stored by the purchaser under the
conditions specified in the material specification.

4 Engineering Requirements
Engineering requirements are minimum requirements specified by responsible engineering to ensure optimal
performance of the manufacturing process.
All engineering requirements have to be met and controlled in production.

4.2.1 Material
Only specified, qualified and approved materials shall be used. The specific materials shall be identified in the
relevant d rawing or associated documents. Adequate records shall ensure the material traceability.
The storage conditions for each specific material shall be those indicated in the corresponding material
specification, individual product specification or process instruction. All limited life materials used shall be within
their useful storage life. T he materials shall be stored in the original containers with marking to ensure a clear
identification.
The finished parts shall be stored in compliance with the storage conditions of the adhesive tape, if applicable.
4.2.1.2 Ink
The compatibility of the ink with the printing device and the substrate has to be assured. Recommendations of
the printing device manufacturer have to be taken into account.
Inks shall be specific for the printing technique applied, e.g. no ink for solvent based digital printing may be
used for UV-curing based digital printing.
4.2.2 Facilities
The facilities (installation and equipment) shall comply with the general and cleanliness requirements as
defined in the process instruction.
The facilities for manufacturing of labels (workshop) shall be f ree of contaminations, well ventilated/illuminated.
4.2.4 Process
The process shall be able to reproduce parts in a defined quality using qualified materials, manufacturing aids
and production equipment. The process shall not negatively influence the material performance according to
relevant material specification or another document.
4.2.6 Personnel
All work steps of the manufacturing procedure shall be carried out by authorized, trained and competent
personnel recognized by an approved training program.
