the loop filled with bituminous compound before embedding in the concrete.

7. The method of joining waterstops shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's

instructions.

C. Joint Fillers

1. Expansion joint filler shall be pre-formed bitumen bonded cork board 25mm thick
and shall compress to 50% of thickness and shall recover to not less than 70% of
its original thickness.

D. Joint Sealants

1. Joint sealants shall be selected in accordance with BS 6213 and shall be

confirmed by the manufacturer in writing as suitable for the intended application,
including the environment. Data sheets shall be provided for the proposed
material indicating the movement accommodation factor.

2. Expansion joint fillers and primers shall be compatible with and obtained from the
same manufacturer as the adjacent sealant.

A. General

1. The Contractor shall prepare and submit a detailed method statement for wet
curing of concrete and maintaining the curing regime to the standards and times
specified. All necessary supports and coverings shall be provided to form
enclosed conditions to provide shade and support the necessary hessian and
polythene.

2. Concrete shall be protected from sunshine and drying winds by approved

shading and wind- breaks, and from cold, rain or running water, from placing for
a period of 7 days. During this period the following measures shall be taken to
prevent the loss of moisture and to minimise thermal stresses caused by the
difference in temperature between the surface of the concrete and the core of the
concrete mass.

3. Surfaces:

a. Polythene sheeting shall be placed immediately after finishing.

b. The curing compound shall be applied immediately after the initial bleed
water evaporates and the concrete has achieved its initial set. In case of de-
shuttering, the concrete surface is wetted with water but not with free
standing water, before the curing compound is applied. The application can
be done by a brush, roller or an airless spray.

c. Alternative methods of curing must be approved before use where special

finishes are required.
B. Contamination

1. Concrete shall be protected from contamination by oil, fuel and other deleterious
materials for a minimum period of 30 days after placing.

C. Insulation Formwork

1. Insulating formwork and insulating blankets shall be left in place until the peak
temperature in the concrete has been reached and without causing thermal
distress to the concrete. The period in the formwork will count towards the curing
period.

D. Protection of Joints

1. Rebates formed to receive sealant and the surfaces of construction joints shall
be protected from curing compound by wet hessian to ensure proper curing of
the joint surface and adjacent concrete. The protection shall remain in place until
the joint surface is sealed.

DESCRIPTION
Polycure AC is a non-degradable liquid type of curing and
sealing compound based on acrylic and proper wetting
agents. Polycure AC is used to prevent rapid evaporation
of water from fresh concrete ensuring uniform hydration,
adequate strength development and minimizes plastic and
drying shrinkage cracks. This will also act as sealing coat 1
for protecting concrete from the attack of water borne salts
and ingress of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The shuttering, the concrete surface is wetted with water but

METHOD STATEMENT
POLYCURE AC

SECTION I: GENERAL COMMENTS

As the quality of the coating is dependent on the substrate and material temperatures, it is recommended to follow the general
working guidelines:

a) Store the materials in a dry and temperature controlled area preferably in the range of +20° C to +25° C.
b) Ensure that the surface temperature where the coating will be applied is kept within the temperature range of +4° C to
+45° C.
c) Application should be done preferably when the day time atmospheric temperatures are considerably low.
d) The equipments should be kept cool so that they do not impart additional temperature to the material when it is being
mixed or applied.
e) Ensure that sufficient material and labour is available at site during application.

The following Equipments are required during application:

a) Protective clothing: Gloves, face mask, overalls, and goggles.

b) Airless spray equipment.
c) Roller.
d) Cleaning solvents.

SECTION II- APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Surface Preparation
1) The concrete surface should be fresh and free from bleed water.
2) For freshly de-moulded concrete, dampen the surface properly with clean water prior to the application of the curing
compound.

Application
1. Mix the contents of the drum properly to remove any sediment and also aid the even distribution of wax and pigments.

2. The recommended method of application of the curing compound is by using airless spray equipment which will provide a
continuous and uniform application. Alternatively, the curing compound can be also applied with a good quality lambskin
roller and it will take 5 hours time to fully dry.

3. When using the spray, the nozzle is to be held at about 400 to 500 mm from the concrete surface. Move the nozzle back
and forth to ensure even and complete coverage.
Similarly, when applying by roller, it should be rolled back and forth for a proper application.

4. Allow the compound to dry fully before subjecting it to any traffic.

5. All tools are to be cleaned immediately after use with cleaning solvents. Hardened materials
can be removed mechanically only.

Note: This is an Acrylic resin based curing compound which penetrates into the concrete surface and seals the pores, thus
preventing the evaporation of the moisture from the concrete. This curing compound will act as a primer for any further
coatings or renders to be applied onto the concrete surface.
