FINAL EXAM Date 13/1/2021
Course title Sensor and Instrumentation
UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY - VNUHCM Course ID 409404
FACULTY OF EEE Duration 80 mins. Question sheet code
Notes: - Allow to use books and documents.

Part 1: Problems

1. Problem 1(3.5 points)

a. (LO1) A bridge circuit is used to read value of RTD Pt1000 as Figure 1. Give R1
= R2 = R3 =1000 ohms, Find Vout = f(RTD); calculate the voltage that produced
by a 1.0oC in temperature.

Figure 1: RTD Wheatstone bridge

b. (LO1) In specific application, range of temperature is 20-200 OC, find RTD and
Vout value at minimum and maximum value of temperature.
c. (LO3) Find the conditioning circuit for question b so that the output voltage of the
circuit VAO is in range 0-5V for Atmega8 Microcontroller. Draw circuit for
conditioning and Microcontroller ADC reading.
d. (LO4) Write C code to read ADC value, calculate the value of temperature; and
then set alarm at the condition of high (PORTB.4) and low temperature
(PORTB.5).

2. Problem 2(3.5 points) Give the loadcell as shown in following figure

Give the DC motor with Hall encoder as shown in following figure. Assume that the Encoder
has 360 ppr; the gearbox reduction ratio is 1/5;

a. (LO1) Calculate resolution of motor rod in cases of reading mode: 1X, 2X, and
4X?
b. (LO4)Draw circuit to read and control motor position using Atmega8
microcontroller (using both of pulses A and B of encoder).
c. (LO2) Describe main configurations so that you can read position from encoder
and control the motor.
d. (LO3)Write C-Code to read motor position with 2X mode, calculate motor rod
angle according to encoder value? Note that, student need to determine motor
direction before calculating motor position angle.

Part 2: Quick Answer (3 points)

1. How are thermocouples manufactured?

2. Give six examples of the materials used to make base metal and noble metal
thermocouples?
3. The output e.m.f. from a chromel–alumel thermocouple (type K), with its reference
junction maintained at 0OC, is 12.207 mV. What is the measured temperature?
4. Calculate the temperature measured by a thermistor when the resistance is 2,800Ω.
Assume that the thermistor has the following coefficients for the Steinhart-Hart
equation: A = 1.1252 X 10-3/K, B = 2.3478 X 10-4/K, and C = 3.5262 X 10-8/K.
5. How are loadcells manufactured?
6. Draw and find output voltage value for the loadcell that use haft-bridge (Wheatstone
Bridge)
