The EDCOM report of 1991 assessed the state of education in
the Philippines and identified several issues including low investment in education, disparities in access, low achievement levels, and high dropout rates in less developed areas. It recommended increasing efficiency and productivity of the education system. One of the findings is the job mismatch and poor placement of graduates.
The transition from education to employment is a critical phase for
graduates, but it often presents challenges like job mismatches and poor placement. These issues not only affect individual careers but also have broader economic implications.
A job mismatch occurs when there is a discrepancy between the
skills possessed by graduates and the skills required by employers. This includes the educational system which is the curricula often lag behind industry needs leaving the graduates unprepared for current job markets. And also the career guidance, because inadequate career counselling and labor market information result in poor career choices by students.
A solution to this, there should be curriculum alignment, enhance
career services that provides robust career counselling and job placement in collaboration with industry stakeholders, and internship apprenticeships that offer real-world experience that bridge the gap between education and employment.
A job mismatch and poor placement of graduates are significant
challenges that require coordinated efforts from educational institutions, employers, and policymakers. By addressing these issues, we can ensure that graduates are well-prepared and adequately placed, benefiting both individuals and the economy as a whole.
