software has been updated subsequently
with a software patch.

- Software upgrades: Only certain program parts are updated with a software upgrade, all data
generated or edited by the user such as the user IDs and passwords etc. as well as the data generated by
the X-ray unit itself is not affected. It is retained.

- Install-CD: In a new installation of the software, all data is deleted. The X-ray unit is reset into the
default state.

Í A login to the unit with the service password is not necessary, but you should push the service switch
on the PI 4 into the service position.

Í Insert the new CD into the drive and restart the acquisition controller.
The software is now installed automatically. This process, which you can follow on the screen, lasts
around 5 minutes.

Í Restart the acquisition controller after successful completion of the installation.

You must check the configuration and recalibrate the unit after the installation or an update of the
software!

Software Configuration

Configuring software

The software must be set initially to the hardware of the X-ray inspection unit after a new installation or an
upgrade of the software.

After the installation of the X-ray inspection unit the software must also be configured to the conditions at
the installation site and to the requirements of the operators of the X-ray unit.

The procedure for setting and securing the parameters is described in the following sections.

The configuration storage dongle

Most of the settings that can be changed in
the different menus are stored as
configuration parameters in a dongle plugged
on the acquisition controller.

The dongle is read during the boot process of the electronics and the corresponding options and settings
are activated in the software.

If no dongle is plugged on during the boot process, no options are activated and a configuration
corresponding to the HI-SCAN 6040-A X-ray unit is set.

If settings are changed in a menu, the configuration parameters are written into the dongle during the
switchoff process.

In contrast to other modules, the dongle can also be plugged on and removed during operation, since it is
connected free of voltage outside the reading and writing processes. Several possibilities described below
result from selective plugging on and removal of the dongle.

Creating a default configuration

Í Switch the X-ray unit off and wait until the acquisition controller also switches itself off.

Í Pull off the dongle and then switch on. A default configuration corresponding to the HI-SCAN 6040-A
unit is now set automatically, options are not released.

Í Wait until the X-ray unit is ready and then plug the dongle on.

Í Switch the X-ray unit off and wait until the acquisition controller also switches itself off so that the
default parameters are written into the dongle.

Í Now switch on again. The default configuration together with the options is now loaded.

Software Configuration

Í Then configure all parameters as described in the following sections.

Í Switch the X-ray unit off and wait until the acquisition controller also switches itself off so that the
new parameters are written in the dongle.

Copying the configuration of another X-ray unit

Í Switch the X-ray inspection unit off and wait until the acquisition controller has also switched itself off.

Í Plug the dongle from the other unit onto the acquisition controller of your unit and switch on.

Í Wait until the X-ray inspection unit is ready, then pull the dongle off and plug on the original dongle.

Í Then correct the parameters of the other unit not applicable for your unit, such as serial number and
network settings (see page 6pp).

Í Switch the X-ray inspection unit off and wait until the acquisition controller also switches itself off, so
that the new parameters are written into the dongle.

Changing software options - Replacing the dongle

Í Switch the X-ray inspection unit on.

Í Wait until the X-ray inspection unit is ready, pull the old dongle off and then plug the new dongle on.

Í Switch the X-ray inspection unit off and wait until the acquisition controller has also switched itself off
so that the previous settings are written into the new dongle.

Í Switch the unit back on.

You can change options and detection characteristics in the dongle using release codes.
You can receive the release codes from the responsible service employees.

Í Then configure the parameters of the new options which the new dongle releases.

Í Switch the X-ray inspection unit off and wait until the acquisition controller has also switched itself off
so that the new parameters are written into the dongle.

Software Configuration

Hardware and software

In the Hardware and software menu you can make all settings depending upon the hardware equipment of
the unit and release or inhibit options in the dongle.
The project-specific changes of the signal assignment of the PI board can be checked and edited in the PI
configuration menu item.
The system can be operated as stand-alone system or as integrated system through the selection of the unit
control.

Unit type

Important system-specific parameters such as number and arrangement of the detector modules, image
format, conveying direction etc. are set by selecting the HI-SCAN 10080 EDt S Right/Left unit type.

You must do this setting first, since in this case the selection possibilities change partially for the
following settings! After changing the unit type you must first exit all menus and perform a restart
of the software.

Software Configuration

Variant

Via the parameter Variant a project-specific configuration will be preselected.

For projects integrating a HI-SCAN 10080 EDt S you may only preselect projects with the following
designation:
PT_ES_00xxx

The parameters valid for the respective X-ray unit can be obtained from the project-specific system
manual.

Software Configuration

Software configuration

The system specific data stored on the dongle can be additionally saved on an external storage medium.

Storing the data of several systems on one common storage medium is not possible since the con-
figuration file name is always the same, hence, the data would be overwritten.

After a dongle reset the data can be loaded from the storage medium to the dongle.

In the case of the HS 10080 EDt S you should only load the configuration data with the hardware
parameters!

Serial number

The serial number entered here is displayed in the Configuration display in the Diagnosis menu. You can
enter a maximum of 6 characters. Please refer to the relevant name plate for the serial number of the X-ray
inspection unit.

When the serial number is changed the unit will be restarted when leaving the menu.

Software Configuration

Monitor type

This menu item allows you to select different monitor types. The default settings correspond to the monitors
selected and should not be changed. Incorrect settings will lead to poor image quality on the system
monitor.

Light barrier type

This menu item allows you to preselect different light barrier types. The LBT/LBR type is set by default.
Other settings are not supported at present!

Overvoltage protection
Newer X-ray inspection units have an overvoltage protection. Its auxiliary contact is led as signal into the PI
board. If the overvoltage protection has tripped, a warning message is displayed in the status display if this
option was activated.
This option has to be activated for X-ray inspection units with integrated overvoltage protection.

Dongle options

You can release additional options for the X-ray inspection unit or inhibit existing options without replacing
the dongle. You need release or inhibit codes for this which are sent to you by your service center after you
have previously sent on your part the dongle identification code to the service center. You can read off the
latter in the Configuration display in the Diagnosis menu.

Software Configuration

External inputs

An internal linkage of signals is possible by assigning the logical inputs to the physical inputs. The entries can
be edited with the edit function.

You obtain the current listing of the symbols within the editor through the help function. Pay attention to the
correct use of the symbols when editing.

Internal X-ray unit outputs

In the case of the internal X-ray unit outputs the physical outputs are assigned to the logical signals. Changes
of the assignments are not possible here.
The current logical signal level is shown by the color display of the signals.

Red: The signal is not active

Green: The signal is active

If one selects one of the signals with the navigator, then a temporary change of the signal state is possible
by the right/left selection. If the menu is exited, the current system state of this signal is restored
automatically.

Software Configuration

Input/output loops

By means of the available input/output signals, signal connections, i.e. input/output loops can be created. The
signal connections get proper names that can be freely defined.

Via the key „1" the created connections can be edited.

Via the key „2" a new connection can be created. The connections are created according to the valid PLC
syntax which can be called up via the help key P3.

Software Configuration

When defining the logic functions you can use all available inputs for one connection. As signal outputs you
can choose only those hardware outputs from a selection list that are not used. If a hardware output is used
in a logic function, this output will be removed from the selection list. The signals can also be output in
parallel via several hardware outputs.
If desired, a filter can be connected in series with the logic function.

Store/load I/O configuration

The changed configuration of the inputs/outputs of the PI board can be stored in this menu.
The stored information, or the default values, can be loaded again from the hard disk of the acquisition
controller.

Software Configuration

Ethernet module

The PI 4 board provides a proper PI server allowing to address the PI board via an optional Ethernet
connection. Using this function the X-ray unit can, for example, be switched on and off via the HME/HMC.

Make sure that the IP address is not identical with the IP address of the Acquisition Controller, since
otherwise an address conflict will occur. In general, the 3rd network segment is different (see sys-
tem manual).

Light barriers

The height information of the bags from the internal light curtain can be evaluated here through two different
limiting values. The limiting values can be output externally as potential-free contacts through the signal
outputs of the PI board.

Number of evaluation computers

Depending upon the current software and the project requirements, it can be necessary to integrate more

Software Configuration

Parameter name Short description

Unit network name Clear identification of the X-ray inspection unit in the network. If the network
name does not match the one provided in the network architecture, then a
communication with other computers is not possible. This applies in
particular to applications integrating a HME/HMC!

Unit node-ID This serves in the data exchange with the MatriX Server to identify the X-ray
inspection unit clearly.

0X Start code
01 Level statements of the relevant X-ray inspection unit.
01 Unit address

Bag-ID suffix Suffix on the image container for the evaluation station. (As a rule the unit
network name)

Host address Own IP address of the X-ray inspection unit

Net mask Net mask of the currently used SH network

Gate address

Transfer mode Here you can manually set the transfer mode. Make sure all network
participants are using the same transfer mode, since otherwise transmission
errors may result.

MatriX Server IP IP address of the connected MatriX Server

address

Time synchronizing IP address of computer designed to carry out a central time synchronization
computer

HIF format - image orientation identifier

A new diagnostics identification was entered in the HIF container being sent to the MatriX Server. In older
UWS software versions, an activation of this identifier can cause that the images are no more applied on the
analyst station. This image orientation identifier is deactivated by default!

If the image orientation identifier is activated, the application of the X-ray image must be tested for
every UWS!

with the PSM module is activated or deactivated.

Automatic detection
The evaluation behaviour of the X-ray inspection unit is changed in this menu.

Detection characteristic

To change the detection characteristic of the X-ray inspection unit manually, a valid 16-digit modification code
must be entered in the detection characteristic submenu.

22 95587974 13/08/09 © Smiths Heimann

Software Configuration

The unit-specific detection code can be created in the factory only if the following information is
available:
Serial number
Dongle ID
Software version

The detector code cannot be transferred to other units! If a replacement dongle is kept for the relevant unit,
then a separate detection code must also be filed for this dongle.

If no detection code is entered, the standard detection characteristic that can deviate from the pro-
ject requirements is activated.

Detection characteristics

The detection characteristics can only be changed manually with a Supervisor authorization.
It can be changed anytime via the HMC.

Force detection characteristics

Particular applications allow for changing the available detection characteristics via the baggage identification
code. It is determined which characteristics is valid if no detection characteristics was explicitly preselected.

Combining frames

The marking of the suspicious areas of a case can be influenced in this menu.

Setting range 50 - 100%: Combining the marking frames

Setting range 0 - 50 %: Separate marking frames

Software Configuration

Calibration
The individual calibration programs of a HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS are combined in this menu item.

After maintenance work on the generators or on the individual lines all calibration programs must be
started absolutely.
Calibrate the detector lines before starting the geometrical calibration!

Detector lines

Individual intensification values for the individual X-ray detectors for compensating different sensitivity are
determined with the calibration.
During the calibration the offset signal of the detector lines is determined initially and then the full scale
signal. The conveyor is switched on shortly for this.

Make sure there are no foreign bodies inside the tunnel!

After successful calibration the system reports with the dialogue:

Then test with the line signal test program that the line signal under radiation (full scale) is in the permitted
range from 25% to 95% (see test and diagnosis programs section).

Software Configuration

Geometry

If maintenance work has been performed on the conveyor system, the generators or the lines, then a
geometrical calibration is required.

Calibration sheet

The supplied calibration sheet is placed in the centre and longitudinal direction on the input conveyor. The
calibration is started by selecting Calibrate with calibration sheet.
If the calibration is ended successfully then the conveyor stops automatically. The conveyors are driven in
reverse direction with the Position conveyor function, so that the calibration sheet is conveyed out of the
system again.

Perform the calibration at least 10 times in succession!

Exit the menu again after completion of calibration. If the main menu is exited, then the acquisition controller
boots and the currently determined values become effective. Calibration with the calibration body can be
performed only after this.

Calibration body

Make sure before starting the calibration that the calibration body is not damaged, or the distance
between the two cover plates is not exactly the same!

Í The calibration body is placed with its smooth side centrally on the input conveyor, so that the side with
the side plate lies opposite the service monitor.
Í The calibration body must lie exactly parallel to the conveyor frame on the conveyor.
Í Position the calibration body in such a way that it is located on centre of the conveyor when entering the
basic unit!
Í The calibration is started by selecting Calibrate with calibration body.

The calibration program must be performed once successfully. After this you have to reboot the acquisition
controller.

95587974 13/08/09 © Smiths Heimann 25

Software Configuration

If the calibration program cannot be completed successfully, this can have the following causes:

Í Bad positioning of the calibration body

Í Calibration body is not in the centre of the basic unit
Í Defective calibration body
Í Wrong conveyor speed
Í Bad positioning of generators or line modules
Í After calibration with the calibration sheet the acquisition controller has not been started once
more.

Passing this test is the major acceptance criterion for the X-ray unit!
After a calibration it is necessary to carry out the material detection test!

automatically.

Parallel operating console

It is possible with the parallel operating console menu item to install an external service laptop parallel to
the system monitor and the system keyboard through which the system can be operated in the service
mode.
The VNC Viewer software must be installed on the laptop for this. Refer to the separate VNC Viewer section
in the appendix to this manual regarding which IP addresses have to be set up on the laptop and how the
enabling procedure has to be performed.

The extended access to the individual subsystems is possibly only temporarily. It is deactivated auto-
matically on logout as service or at the next booting of the software.

Set operating mode on HMC

Here the command source for processing the operating mode is preselected. If the HMC is defined as
command source, then the sources of preselection provided at the X-ray inspection unit are partly
deactivated.

Software Configuration

Maximum evaluation time L1

The maximum evaluation time L1 is the maximum evaluation time within which a result of the evaluation
computer must be available! If this maximum evaluation time is exceeded, a Timeout (T) for the current
baggage item is sent to the BHS, independent of the result being sent by the evaluation computer.
If “0" is selected for the maximum evaluation time the monitoring is deactivated!

Maximum evaluation time L2

The maximum evaluation time L2 is the maximum evaluation time within which an assessment result of
the analyst must be available! The evaluation time must be a bit longer than set in the node.cfg in the Matrix
Server.
If this maximum evaluation time is exceeded, a Timeout (T) for the current baggage item is sent to the BHS,
independent of the decision of the operator.

TCP/IP configuration

In this menu item the X-ray unit's local IP address and port number are entered for the purpose of
establishing a communication with the BHS.
The BHS's IP address and port number are entered as well in order to establish a communication with the X-
ray unit.

Depending on the airport installation the linkage can be effected within the same Ethernet network.
For more details, please refer to the system manual.

The transfer mode can also be set. In the automatic variant the transfer mode is determined and set by the
Acquisition Controller. This may sometimes lead to transmission errors.

Inspection/evaluation level of unit

Here you can preset the unit's level which is attached to the transfer telegram sent to the BHS.

Unit ID

Here the unit ID is set within the preset inspection level. This unit ID is attached to the transfer telegram sent
to the BHS.

Software Configuration

Buffer time in case of power failure

You can determine the time how long your X-ray unit is kept in the stand-by mode through the internal UPS in
the case of an external power failure.

In this stand-by mode all computers, the network components, the lines and some of the 24V power supply
units are supplied with voltage. The conveyor drives are not supplied with voltage so that X-raying the
baggage is no longer possible!
The results of the previous X-rays are transferred to the BHS.

If the power supply is restored inside this buffer time, X-raying can be started immediately.
If the power failure lasts longer than the set buffer time, then the unit is shut down correctly.

X-ray functions

The settings of these functions are not relevant for operating the EDtS. A detailed description is
therefore dispensed with! The factory settings should not be changed!

Dose monitoring

The reference value for the correct dose is automatically measured and stored after exiting the
menu the next time the X-ray generator is switched on; therefore not immediately on activating the
function. After changes to the generator controls, a line interface card or calibration of the detector lines, a
new reference value must be generated by switching the dose monitoring off and back on.

Minimum bag spacing

This parameter determines which spacing bags must have from one another so that the operating program
detects two separate bags. Bags that are X-rayed with less spacing are detected and handled accordingly
only as one bag.
As standard a spacing of 20 cm between two bags is assumed.

If a baggage spacing below 20 cm is preselected, this may lead to so-called ghost suitcases, if there
are any labels attached to the bags.

Software Configuration

IMS Image Store System

In the condition on delivery the store and recall functions of the IMS system are released for all users. If you
want to change these functions then you can determine this in the two bottom menu items.

Online recording

With online recording the images of all X-rayed baggage are stored automatically for archiving and training
purposes. Several thousand images can be stored depending upon the available capacity of the built-in
storage disk.

If this option is activated in actual operation, this may lead to problems of performance of the Acqui-
sition Controller. To rule this out, the function must always be deactivated in actual operation!

Organize and recall images

You can organize recorded images yourself in this menu or copy them to a further storage medium.

If you want to copy images on or from a ZIP disk or CD-ROM or recall images directly from a disk or
CD, insert this in the drive before you select the IMS menu!
