Question 1

You are provided with the following;

FA1, which is a solution a dibasic acid, H2X.

FA2, whcich is a 0.1M sodium hydroxide solution.

Solid Q, which is a metal carbonate, M2CO3. (RFM of Q = 106)

You are required to determine the molar concentration of FA1 and the percentage
impurity in Q.

Procedure A

Using a 10cm3 measuring cylinder, transfer exactly 8.5cm3 of FA1 into a 250 cm3
volumetric flask and make up the mark with distilled water. Shake the flask to mix
the contents thoroughly. Lable the solution FA3.

Pipette 20.0 or 25.0 cm3 of FA2 into a clean conical flask and add 2-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator. Titrate the contents with the solution FA3 from the
burette. Repeat the titration 2-3 times to obtain consistent results. Enter your
results in the table 1 below.

Procedure B

Weigh accurately about 1.2g of Q and dissolve it in 15cm3 of FA1 in a beaker.

Transfer the resultant solution with washings into a 250 cm3 volumetric flask and
make it to the mark with distilled water. Label the resultant solution FA4.

Pipette 20.0 or 25.0cm3 of FA2 in a clean conical flask and add 2-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator, and then titrate with the solution FA4 from the
burette. Repeat the titration until you obtain consistent results. Enter your

Question 2. (32 marks)

You are provided with substance W, which contains two cations and two anions.
Carry out the following tests on W to identify the ions in it. Identify any gas(es)
evolved. Record your observations and deductions in the spaces provided in the table
below.

Test Observation Deduction

(a) Heat two spatula
endfuls of W in a dry
test tube gently and
then strongly until
there is no further
change.

(b) To one spatula

endful of W in a test
tube, add 4 drops of
concentrated
sulphuric acid and
warm.

(c) Dissolve three

spatula endfuls of W
with about 5cm3 of
water.

7
(i) To 1cm3 of the
solution of W,
add 3 drops of
neutral iron(III)
chloride solution
and heat.

(ii) To the remaining

solution of W,
add dilute
sodium
hydroxide
solution
dropwise until
there is no
further change.
Filter and keep
both the filtrate
and the residue.

(d) To the filtrate add

dilute hydrochloric
acid dropwise is just
acidic. Divide the
acidic solution into
six parts.

8
(i) To the first part
of the acidic
solution, add
dilute sodium
hydroxide
solution
dropwise until
in excess.

(ii) To the second

part of the acidic
solution, add
dilute ammonia
solution
dropwise until
in excess.

(iii) To the third part

of the acidic
solution, add 2-3
drops potassium
iodide solution.

(iv) Use the fourth

part of the acidic
solution to carry
out a test of
your own choice

9
to confirm one
the cation in W.

(v) To the fifth part

of the acidic
solution, add 2-3
drops of lead(II)
nitrate solution
and warm.
(vi) Use the sixth
part of the acidic
solution to carry
out a test of
your own choice
to confirm the
first anion in W.

10
(e) Wash the residue
with distilled water
and dissolve it in
dilute sulphuric acid.
Divide the resultant
solution into three
parts.
(i) To the first part
of the solution,
add dilute sodium
hydroxide
solution dropwise
until in excess.
(ii) To the second of
the solution, add
dilute ammonia
solution dropwise
until in excess.
(iii) To the third part
of the solution,
add little dilute
ammonia solution
followed by
dimethylglyoxime
solution.

(f) (i) the cations in W are ..................................... and .................................

(ii) the anions in W are ....................................... and .................................

the end of a spatula.

(b) To a 2cm3 of G, add

3cm3 of water.
Shake vigorously
and test with litmus
paper. Divide the
mixtures into four
portions.
