INTERNET
– Is a global wide area network that connects computer systems across the world.
–A system architecture that has revolutionized communications and methods of
commerce by allowing various computer networks around the world to interconnect.
– Sometimes referred to as a “network of networks,”
– Provides a capability so powerful and general that it can be used for almost any
purpose that depends on information, and it is accessible by every individual who
connects to one of its constituent networks.

HISTORY OF INTERNET

– The Internet emerged in the United States in the 1970s but did not become visible to
the general public until the early 1990s.
– By 2015, approximately 3.2 billion people, or nearly half of the world’s population,
were estimated to have access to the Internet

FOUNDATION OF THE INTERNET

The Internet resulted from the effort to connect various research networks in the
United States and Europe. First, DARPA established a program to investigate the
interconnection of “heterogeneous networks.”
This program, called Internetting, was based on the newly introduced concept of
open architecture networking, in which networks with defined standard interfaces would
be interconnected by “gateways.”
In 1974 Vinton Cerf, then at Stanford University in California, and this author,
then at DARPA, collaborated on a paper that first described such a protocol and system
architecture—namely, the transmission control protocol (TCP), which enabled different
types of machines on networks all over the world to route and assemble data packets.

TCP, which originally included the Internet protocol (IP), a global addressing
mechanism that allowed routers to get data packets to their ultimate destination
By the early 1980s the “open architecture” of the TCP/IP approach was adopted
and endorsed by many other researchers and eventually by technologists and
businessmen around the world.

COMMERCIAL EXPANTION
The rise of commercial Internet services and applications helped to fuel a rapid
commercialization of the Internet.
One important factor was the introduction of the personal computer and the
workstation in the early 1980s—a development that in turn was fueled by
unprecedented progress in integrated circuit technology and an attendant rapid decline
in computer prices.
In 1993 the University of Illinois made widely available Mosaic, a new type
of computer program, known as a browser, that ran on most types of computers and,
through its “point-and-click” interface, simplified access, retrieval, and display of files
through the Internet.
Mosaic incorporated a set of access protocols and display standards originally
developed at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) by Tim Berners-
Lee for a new Internet application called the World Wide Web (WWW).
Shortly thereafter, the software giant Microsoft Corporation became interested in
supporting Internet applications on personal computers (PCs) and developed its Internet
Explorer Web browser (based initially on Mosaic) and other programs.

DISADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNET

Information Loss
– The information crucial to us or any important files can be easily taken by the
hackers.
- There is no exact proof for the security for the details we store like account numbers,
password etc. hence, sensitive information must be carefully stored by the people.
Spam
– The unnecessary emails, advertisements etc. sometimes are said to be spam
because they have the ability to slow down the system and make the users to face a lot
of problems.
-Spam makes the people more confuse since important emails are also stored along the
spam.
Virus Attacks
– The malware or virus threats are so deadly that affects the system to a greater
extend.
- It immediately deletes all important files and finally the system ends up being crushed.
- The virus attacks is possible in three ways.
* One it attacks selected files.
* Two it harms the executable boot files.
* And the most dangerous of all is macro virus which
has the ability to replicate and expand all parts of files.

Virtual World
- The people using internet often will forget the difference between virtual and real
world.
- This causes the people to get depressed quickly and it leads to isolation and obesity
problems.

WEB APPLICATION
– Is a computer program that utilized web browsers and web technology to perform task
over the internet.
– Is a combination of server-side scripts (PHP and ASP) to handle the storage and
retrieval of the information and client-side scripts (Java Scripts and HTML) to present
information to the user. This allowed the users to interact with the company using online
forms, content management systems, shopping carts, and more. In addition, the
applications allow the employees to create documents, share information, collaborate
on projects, and work on common documents regardless of location or devices.
The web application requires a web server to manage requests from the client,
an application server to perform the task requested, and sometimes a database to store
the information. Application server technology ranges from ASPNET, ASP and
ColdFusion, to PHP and JSP.
Here’s what a typical web application flow looks like:
1. User triggers a request to the web server over the internet, either through web
browser or the application users interface.
2. Web server forward this request to the appropriate web application server.
3. Web application server performs the request task – such as querying the
database or processing the data – then generates the results of the requested
data.
4. Web application server sends results to the web server with the requested
information or processed data.
5. Web server responds back to the client with the requested information that then
appears on the users display.

EXAMPLE OF A WEB APPLICATION

 Web applications include online forms, shopping carts, word processors,
spreadsheets, video and photo editing, file conversion, file scanning, and email
programs such as Gmail, Yahoo, and AOL. Popular applications include Google
Apps and Microsoft 365.
 Google Apps for Work has Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slider,
online storage and more. Other functionalities include online sharing of
documents and calendars. This lets all the team members access the same
version of document simultaneously.

BENEFITS OF A WEB APPLICATION

 Web applications run on multiple platforms regardless of OS or device as long as
the browser is compatible.
 All users access the same version, eliminating any compatibility issues.
 They are not installed on the hard drive, thus eliminating space limitation.
 They reduce software piracy in subscription – based web applications (i.e.
SaaS).
 They reduce cost for both the business and end user as there is less support and
maintenance required by the business and lower requirements for the end user’s
computer.

ADVANTAGES OF WEB APPLICATION

 A Better User Experience – With responsive design, it’s a lot easier and cheaper
to make a web based system user friendly across multiple platforms and various
screen size.
 Flexible Access – Employee can work from anywhere with internet access.
 Client Secure Login – Impress clients with modern web portal and improved
costumer services with automated processes.

 Easy Setup – It takes a couple of minutes to setup a new user provide a URL,
username, password and they’re away.
 Always Up to Date – As everyone is accessing the same version of the web app
via a URL, they will always be accessing the most up to date version of the
software.
 Storage Increase – With the availability of the cloud, storage space is virtually
infinite.

DISADVANTAGES OF WEB APPLICATION

 Internet Reliance – While 4G & WI – FI internet access is available in many
locations, if you happen to lose connection you will not be able to access your
web app.
 Security – While many business people may believe that data is less secure in a
cloud environment, we beg to differ. There are ways in which you can reduce risk
of a data breach, such as SSL enforcement for a secure HTTPS access to your
computer.
 Reduce Speed – It’s likely that a web will operate at a slightly slower speed than
one hosted on a server locally.
 Browser Support – Unfortunately, we don’t all use the same browser. This means
during development you’ll need to ensure your app is supported across a variety
browser.
