INTRODUCTION

1.2 MARKET DEFINITION

• Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is a dialysis modality used to substitute for impaired renal function
over an extended period, intended to be applied for up to 24 hours a day. This technique is designed to treat
hospitalized and critically ill patients in the intensive care unit who develop acute kidney injury (AKI). Unlike
chronic kidney disease, which occurs slowly over time, AKI often occurs in hospitalized patients treated in an
intensive care environment, and typically occurs over a few hours to a few days. The term Acute Kidney Failure
(ARF) is used to define severe or irreversible AKI that is fatal and requires intensive treatment.

1.3 MARKET SCOPE

• This study covers the market for CRRT products used in the treatment of AKI patients in ICUs to arrive at
the CRRT market size (by product and modality) for 2015 to 2020
• The number of procedures for each region/country has been estimated on the basis of the circuit life of
CRRT in a particular region
• The market size for CRRT services is not covered under the scope of study
• The market size of CRRT products that are used off-label (without regulatory approval) in a few countries is
not considered under the scope of the study
• The market size for the CRRT products used in the treatment of patients other than CRRT is covered under
the scope of the study

2.2.2 PRIMARY RESEARCH

• Extensive primary research was conducted after acquiring knowledge about the CRRT market scenario through
secondary research. More than 40 primary interviews were conducted from both the demand (nephrologists,
intensivists, purchase managers, and administrators of hospitals and head of research universities) and supply
sides (CRRT product manufacturers and distributors). The primaries interviewed for this study include experts
from the CRRT industry, such as CEOs, VPs, directors, sales heads, and marketing managers of the tier 1, 2, and
3 companies engaged in offering CRRT products across the globe; nephrologists, intensivists, ICU and renal

2.3 MARKET SIZE ESTIMATION METHODOLOGY

• Both, top-down and bottom-up approaches were used to estimate and validate the size of the global market and
to estimate the size of various other dependent submarkets in the overall CRRT market. The research methodology
used to estimate the market size includes the following details:
• The key players in the market were identified through secondary research and their market shares were determined
through primary and secondary research. This entire procedure includes the study of the annual and financial
reports of the top market players and extensive interviews for key insights with industry leaders such as CEOs,
VPs, directors, and marketing executives. All percentage shares, splits, and breakdowns were determined using
secondary sources and verified through primary sources. All possible parameters that affect the markets covered
in this research study have been accounted for, viewed in extensive detail, verified through primary research, and
analyzed to get the final quantitative and qualitative data. This data was consolidated and added with detailed
inputs and analysis from MarketsandMarkets, and presented in this report.
• The following figure shows the overall number of procedures and the market size estimation process employed
for the purpose of this study:
