OF FUNDS HELD ON FRIDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER, 2023 AT

The above subject matter refers.

Machakos University through the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer
organized a capacity building training for the members of academic staff on Grant Writing Proposal
and Sourcing of Funds as one of the key PC target items for the 2022/2023 FY.

The training was officially opened by Prof. Jones Agwata representing Prof. Peter Mwita, the DVC
(RIL)

The training was facilitated by Prof. Maina Mwangi-Director, Innovation Incubation and University-
Industry Linkages who shared his experiences in grant proposal writing with academic staff to
enable them apply for various grants through proposal development.

The training attracted Twenty-eight (28) participants drawn from various Schools in the University.

Attached is a brief report of the training enumerating areas that were covered, benefits gained and
the way forward.

REPORT ON THE GRANT WRITING PROPOSAL AND SOURCING OF


FUNDS HELD ON FRIDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER, 2023 AT 8:30AM IN SENATE
ROOM PL3.

1. Preamble

To build the capacity of researchers and innovators at Machakos University, it is


imperative to continuously undertake training of academic staff and students on
research and innovation activities. In line with this, a training was undertaken on 6 th
September, 2023 and Twenty-eight (28) participants attended. The training was
facilitated by by Prof. Maina Mwangi-Director, Innovation Incubation and
University-Industry Linkages

2. Objectives of the training


The objectives of the training were to:
a. Inculcate the culture of mentorship by utilizing internally available expertise to
ensure continuous knowledge sharing among academic staff and sharing of
experiences of success stories on the externally funded proposals
b. Create a platform for knowledge sharing and development of skills necessary
for grant proposal writing and sourcing of funds
c. Enhance the capacity of the researchers at Machakos University to write
fundable research proposals that respond to current and emerging global
challenges

a. How to respond to research proposal calls


b. How to establish appropriate research teams
c. How to write grant winning proposals
d. How to develop and establish credible collaborations and networks
e. How and when to submit research proposals

4. Benefits of the training


The benefits of the training cromprised of:

a. Knowledge on networking which strengthens a framework of coordinated
approach in undertaking research activities, monitoring, evaluation and
reporting process.
b. Constructing a grant-winning proposal, adhering to the checklists and key
components of grant proposals.
c. Tips for strengthening multidisciplinary and collaborative research.

5. Strengths noted during the training


a. The facilitators shared experiences with the participants which will enable
MksU’s upcoming researchers to borrow good practices that will help to
strengthen the Universitiy’s research activities.
b. The facilitators were equipped with adequate and relevant knowledge and
experience, they were well prepared and used appropriate illustrations to
communicate to the audience.

6. Way forward
a. Strengthen multidisciplinary research through collaborations and networks.
b. Create stakeholder’s forum to assess benefits of research outputs The
University needs to engage policy makers such as parliament, industries,
donors, among others for purposes of creating a forum to utilize MksU research
outputs.
c. Develop policy briefs and share the same with policy makers.
