TRAINING HELD ON FRIDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER 2023 AT
SENATE ROOM
The above subject matter refers.

Machakos University through the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer
organized a capacity building training for members of academic staff and students on Innovation
and Entrepreneurship as one of the key PC target items for the 2023/2024 FY.

The training was officially opened by Prof. Peter Mwita, the DVC (RIL).

The training was facilitated by Mr. Kennon Mbae from Mwalimu Biashara Limited who took staff
and students through various issues on Innovation and Entrepreneurship aspects.

The training attracted fifty-seven (57) participants drawn from various Schools in the University.

Attached is a brief report of the training enumerating areas that were covered, benefits gained and
the recommendations/and way forward.

REPORT ON INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING HELD
ON FRIDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER 2023 AT SENATE ROOM

1. Preamble

To build the capacity of researchers and innovators at Machakos University, it is


imperative to continuously undertake training of academic staff and students on
Innovation and Entrepreneurship. In line with this, a training was undertaken on 15 th
September, 2023 and fifty-seven (57) participants attended. The training was
facilitated by Mr. Kennon Mbae from Mwalimu Biashara Limited.

2. Objectives of the training


The objectives of the training were to:
a) Impart knowledge and skills on the link between Innovation and
Entrepreneurship
b) Enhance the capacity of staff and students to undertake innovation activities
c) Enhance the capacity of the students to develop entreprenurship skills
d) Encourage the participants to involve themselves in entrepreneurship and
innovation projects and processes

3. Areas covered during the meeting


The various areas covered during the training were:
a) Understanding the available and existing innovation ecosystems
b) The link between innovation and entrepreneurship
c) How to develop an entrepreneurship mindset
d) The process of converting innovations into entrepreneurial activities

4. Benefits of the training


The benefits realised from the training were:
a) The value of innovations to the development of the University and the country
b) The importance of converting innovations into marketable products
c) The significance of ensuring innovations are turned into entrepreneurial
activities and products
d) The value of proper understanding of the relationship between innovation and
entrepreneurship

5. Observations noted during the training
a) The facilitator was able to share practical experiences with the participants
which will enable MksU’s upcoming innovators to borrow good practices that
will help to strengthen their Innovation and Entrepreneurship skills
b) The facilitator was properly equipped and knowleable on the subject matter as
he was experienced, well prepared in the use of appropriate illustrations to
communicate to the audience.

6. Recommendations and the way forward


Some of the recommendations are:
a) Create and strengthen multidisciplinary teams from accross the University in
undertaking innovation activities
b) Develop a forum through which sensitization of stduents and staff is undertaken
in matters innovation and entrepreneurship
c) Conduct more such trainings to inculate a culture of innovation and
entreprenurship in the university
d) Identify innovation and entrepreneurship champions in the University
e) Initiate a process of inter-and intra School and Department competitions on
innovation and entrepreneurship
