Water enters the tank shown through point 3, while corn syrup (s= 1.

42) is forced in through pipe

1. The liquids are incompressible and from a homogeneous mixture of oil globules in water. The
mixture then makes an exit through pipe 2. Compute the following:
a) Exit velocity of the mixture at pipe 2.
b) Unit weight of the mixture leaving at pipe 2. Specific gravity of the mixture leaving at pipe 2.
c) The rate at which the surface of the mixture is rising in the tank (dh/dt) when the diameter of
the tank is 1.2m
A masonry dam show has the following dimensions:
B= 20m, H= 20m, L= 1m, a= 5m, b= 3m, c= 4m, h= 15m

Assuming full uplift pressure at the heel and zero at the toe.

Determine the following:

a) Factor of safety against sliding if coefficient of friction between the dam and soil is 0.43
b) Factor of safety against overturning
c) Minimum soil pressure
d) Maximum soil pressure
e) At what height of water “h” will have a Factor of Safety against sliding of 1.5 when μ=0.43
Given Solution
Height of water at at FSs=1.5
Water is pumped from reservoir A through a 600mm pipe to reservoir B shown. The pump at 1 is
placed near reservoir A, while a hydraulic motor (turbine) at 2 is placed in the pipeline
between the pump and reservoir B. The motor delivers 56 hp of electricity at an efficiency of
80%. With a volume flow rate of 890 L/s, Determine:
a) Energy extracted by the hydraulic motor.
b) Energy added by the pump when it is rated at 1135 hp and is 89% efficient.
c) Elevation of Point B, considering head loss of 20m due to friction in pipes.
d) Pressure at point C, considering 20m head loss.
