SERVICE ADVISORY - Inspection of Expansion Joints

Form CEF-001 Rev B. 7/1/2006

Engine(s) Affected:

This Service Advisory applies to all EMD 2-stroke engines.

Purpose:

To alert EMD personnel of the consequences of mechanical damage to the expansion joint bellow.

Action Required:

Visually inspect the transition joint on each engine. Replace the expansion joint if a dent or crack is found.
Do not install an expansion joint if a dent is visible in the convolutions of the bellow. Exercise caution
during storage, handling and installation of the expansion joints to prevent mechanical damage to the
convolutions of the bellow. Use nylon straps for lifting and handling the expansion joints. Be sure to
prevent the contact of tooling with the bellow during the torqueing operation.

Background:

Several locomotive engines have suffered road failures identified by loss of power. The failures were
attributed to blown expansion joints at the turbo transition joint. The failures originated from dents in the
convolutions of the bellow created during handling or installation. Photos of the mechanical damage
(dents) and the resultant cracks are shown in the Figures 1 and 2.
