What is Anatomy?
Anatomy concerns the workings of
the body and depends on both
structure AND function.

• Structure cannot not exist without function (or


vice versa)

• Biological adaptation (through survival and


reproduction) depends on the functional
outcomes of a possessed body structure. This
inherently ties the two together.

• Gross (macroscopic) Anatomy:


- Systemic anatomy = 1st semester

What is Systemic Anatomy?
Studies the gross anatomy of
each “organ system” in the human body.
(this provides a nice, organized and
easily understood conceptual
framework for introductory anatomy courses!)

Organ System:
is a major group anatomical structures
that contribute to a shared major function
of the body.
e.g., digestion or reproduction
Organisation of Anatomy
Note that this what is meant by “organise”!
Rather than all body parts being the same, or chaotically different,
they are parts that have order in their arrangement, structure and
function: i.e. organised.

This course aims to enable you to:
1. ACQUIRE ANATOMICAL
FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE:
Recognise 'normal' human systemic
anatomy and integrate anatomical form
with function.
2. ACQUIRE & APPLY ANATOMICAL
UNDERSTANDING: Understand that
the interdependence of anatomical
structure and function provides a basis
for clinical problem-solving.
3. ACQUIRE & DEMONSTRATE
AWARENESS OF REGULATIONS &
ETHICS IN THE STUDY OF HUMAN
ANATOMY: Demonstrate an awareness
of ethical issues and respect for both
living and deceased humans in the
context of an anatomical laboratory, and
regulations required in the study of
human anatomy.

2.2 Learning Objectives
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
1. ANATOMICAL TERMINOLOGY:
Communicate effectively using correct anatomical terminology
2. ANATOMICAL IDENTIFICATION:
Identify the principal components, relevant anatomical features and relationships of each of the
major human organ systems on real human anatomical (cadaveric) specimens
3. ANATOMICAL STRUCTURE:
Describe the structure of the cells, tissues and organs that constitute each major human organ
system.
4. ANATOMICAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Summarise the relationships between the various organ systems.
5. ANATOMICAL ORGAN FUNCTION:
Define the principal function/s of each major human organ system.
6. FORM-FUNCTION INTERDEPENDENCE:
Apply the concept of interdependent 'form and function' to illustrate how the structure of an organ
system accomplishes its functions.
7. STRUCTURAL & FUNCTIONAL CHANGE:
Demonstrate the ability to predict some functional deficits that may occur as a result of altered
structure.

Practical classes in GAF
INDUCTIONS
Gross Anatomy Facility (GAF):
Very strict rules and regulations as a Queensland “School of Anatomy”
• Human cadaveric materials in use, body donor program
COMPULSORY Online inductions (Safety, Ethics & Procedures)
– MUST BE COMPLETED 72h BEFORE first GAF prac!!!!

1. Online code of conduct for use of donated human tissues:


• Regulations
2. SBMS GAF Induction Training Module:
• Working and studying in the GAF
• See instructions in Blackboard “Learning Resources”
• Out of Practicals study in the GAF is not allowed due to legislative
requirements

Then a Face-to-Face (F2F) GAF Induction at the first prac in the GAF lab

ENTERING THE GAF - CHECKLIST
PREPARE: Time is precious, prepare for your pracs!!! (bring your prac notes, COMPLETED! )
COVID: follow social distancing guidelines as directed by GAF staff
Arrive 15 minutes before prac so we will start on time.
Late students will not be permitted after 5min from scheduled start time.
MUST BRING: (without these items you will not be permitted entry)
1. STUDENT ID CARD: ID cards scanned at door to enter the GAF to record attendance,
and check induction records.
2. ID CARD CLIP: To clip to lab coat to be identified as an enrolled student (can be
purchased at UQ Bookshop/School Locker)

3. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE):


1. White, clean laboratory coat Electronic Devices Not Permitted
2. Shoes MUST completely enclose foot (e.g. laptops, phones & tablets)
3. Safety glasses These must be switch off and left in
4. Gloves (supplied in the GAF) your bag before you enter, and not
retrieved until you leave

Gross Anatomy Facility. Please turn these off, and leave them in your bags
