Ch03 PAIR OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

1 MARK

1 Graphically, the pair of equations 6x – 3y + 10 = 0 2x – y + 9 = 0 represents two lines which are

(A) intersecting at exactly one point. (B) intersecting at exactly two points.
(C) coincident. (D) parallel.

2 If a pair of linear equations is consistent, then the lines will be

(A) parallel (B) always coincident

(C) intersecting or coincident (D) always intersecting

3 The pair of equations x = a and y = b graphically represents lines which are

(A) parallel (B) intersecting at (b, a)
(C) coincident (D) intersecting at (a, b)
4 For what value of k, do the equations 3x – y + 8 = 0 and 6x – ky = –16 represent coincident lines?
(A) 1/ 2 (B) -1/2 (C) 2 (D) –2

5 The value of c for which the pair of equations cx – y = 2 and 6x – 2y = 3 will have infinitely many solutions is
(A) 3 (B) – 3 (C) –12 (D) no value

6 Assertion: The pairs of equations x+2y-5 = 0 and -4x-8y+20=0 have infinitely many solutions.
𝑎1 𝑏1 𝑐1
Reason: if = = 𝑐2 then the pair of equations has infinitely many solutions.
𝑎2 𝑏2

a) both assertion and reason are correct and reason is correct explanation for assertion
b) both assertion and reason are correct but reason is correct explanation for assertion
c) assertion is correct but reason is false
d) both assertion and reason are false

7 Assertion: If a pair of linear equations is consistent, then the lines are intersecting or coincident
Reason: Because the two lines definitely have a solution.
a) both assertion and reason are correct and reason is correct explanation for assertion
b) both assertion and reason are correct but reason is correct explanation for assertion
c) assertion is correct but reason is false
d) both assertion and reason are false

8 Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 6. If 8 is subtracted from each of the numbers, the ratio becomes
4 : 5. Find the numbers.

9 The ratio of incomes of two persons is 9 : 7 and the ratio of their expenditures is 4 : 3. If each of
them manages to save Rs 2000 per month, find their monthly incomes.

10 Seven times a two digit number is equal to four times the number obtained by reversing the order
of its digits. If the difference of the digits is 3, determine the number.
11 Two years ago, Salim was thrice as old as his daughter and six years later, he will be four years
older than twice her age. How old are they now?

12 1 1
A fraction becomes 3, when 2 is subtracted from the numerator and it becomes 2 when 1 is
subtracted from the denominator. Find the fraction.

13 If the pair of linear equations in two variables: 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 4, 2𝑎𝑥 + (𝑎 + 𝑏) 𝑦 = 28 are

onsistent and dependent then prove that 𝑏 = 2𝑎.

14 Solve the following pair of equations:

152x – 378y = – 74
–378x + 152y = – 604

15 Draw the graphs of the equations 5x – y = 5 and 3x – y = 3. Determine the co-ordinates of the
vertices of the triangle formed by these lines and the y axis.

18 A train covered a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train would have been 10 km/h faster,
it would have taken 2 hours less than the scheduled time. And, if the train were slower by 10 km/h;
it would have taken 3 hours more than the scheduled time. Find the distance covered by the train.

19 The students of a class are made to stand in rows. If 3 students are extra in a row, there would be 1
row less. If 3 students are less in a row, there would be 2 rows more. Find the number of students
in the class.

20 The sum of a two-digit number and the number obtained by reversing the digits is 66. If the digits
of the number differ by 2, find the number. How many such numbers are there?

21 The father’s age is six times his son’s age. Four years hence, the age of the father will be four times
his son’s age. Find the present ages, in years, of the son and the father.

22 A taken 3 hours more than B to walk a distance of 30 km. But if A doubles his speed, he is ahead of
B by 1 ½ hours. Find their original speed.
