UNIT 13: CAN YOU HELP ME?


PERIOD 3 – SKILLS TIME
I/ Objectives
- To revise vocabulary and structures seen previously; provide extra vocabulary
Skills development
- Reading: Read and understand 2 factual accounts about young heroes; identify words and their
meanings in a text
- Listening: Listen and match
- Speaking: Ask and answer questions about people’s jobs.
- Writing: identify and use sub clauses.
II/ Procedures: ( 90 mins )

Part Teacher's activities


- Greeting
- Discussion: Start with a brief discussion about heroes. Ask students to share who their

Write some of their responses on the board.
Lead-in
2/ Reading - Show students the title "Young Heroes" and the pictures of the boys in the text.
(35’) Ask them why they think these boys are considered heroes.

Listen and read:
- T tells ss that they are going to listen to a text
- T plays the recording
- Ask ss to listen and follow the text
- Ask ss to listen again and underline new words (including the words in Ex3)
- T writes new words on board and lets ss guess the meanings
- T writes the guesses on board and asks ss to look up the words in the Dictionary in
the Workbook p132
- T explains more as necessary
- Ss read aloud the words
- Ss take turns to read aloud the text

 Why did Charlie decide to do a sponsored bike ride?
 How did he ask people to sponsore?

 What has Ryan's foundation accomplished since 1999?

With books closed, ask questions to elicit jobs vocabulary
3/ Listening E.g. Who do you see when you are ill? (doctor).
(10’) Who teaches in a school? (teacher).
Who comes to your house if there is a fire? (fireman).
Who works in a police station? (policeman)
Listen and number:
- T explains:
Ss will listen to a recording of 4 people talking about their jobs. Ss have to number the
pictures while listening
- T plays the recording for ss to do the exercise
- T plays the recording again and pauses after each dialogue for ss to check the
answers

4/ Speaking - Ask ss to focus on the word pool and ask them to guess their meanings
(15’) Presentation:
- Explain the model for ss
- Call one student to go to the board and practice in front of the class:
Student thinks of a job and teacher asks questions: Does he work with people? Does he
wear a hat?
Student keeps responding questions until teacher gives the correct job.
Practice:
- Ask ss to work in pairs and take turns to ask and answer about the jobs.
- Check accuracy of ss: pronunciation, grammar, …
Lead-in
5/ Writing - T asks ss to focus on the rules in the box.
(15’) - T asks 1 s to read the rules for the class.
Presentation:
- Explain how to use sub-clauses in a sentence to give more information. Highlight
the use of 'which' for things and 'who' for people, and the importance of using
commas.
- Write sample sentences on the board and break it down into its main clause and
sub-clause:
Lin Hao, who is a ten-year-old pupil, was very brave.
Charlie Simpson, who is a young boy from England, raised a lot of money for
Haiti.
The bike ride, which took place in a local park, was a huge success.
The charity, which Ryan founded, has helped many people in Africa.

Guided activity: Fill in the blanks
