P(Y=1)=1+e−(β0+β1X1+β2X2+…+βkXk)
Where:
Predict whether a student will be admitted to a university based on their exam scores
(two independent variables).
In this example, we have a dataset of past applicants where we know their exam scores
and whether they were admitted. We want to build a logistic regression model to
predict the probability of admission for new applicants based on their exam scores.
We would fit a logistic regression model using the logistic function as shown earlier. The
model will estimate the coefficients β0, β1, and β2, and then we can use this model to
predict the probability of admission for a new student given their exam scores. If the
estimated probability is greater than 0.5, we predict the student will be admitted;
otherwise, we predict they will not be admitted.
Logistic regression is a powerful and widely used technique for binary classification tasks
and can be extended to multiclass classification as well. It's interpretable and often
serves as a fundamental building block in machine learning and statistics.
In multiple logistic regression, the logistic regression equation is used to model the
probability of an event occurring (usually coded as 1) based on a linear combination of
multiple independent variables. The logistic function (sigmoid curve) is used to
transform this linear combination into a probability:
P(Y=1)=1+e−(β0+β1X1+β2X2+…+βpXp)1
