The Dandelion
MOVING PICTURE TUTORIAL & SEASONAL POEM

The following poem was written to

accompany the moving picture above. There
are four distinct verses. As a result, each verse
corresponds with one of the images shown
on the moving wheel. Spin the wheel as you
read the poem out loud.

DIRECTIONS

1. Download and print all associated resources using a color printer.

2. Using sharp scissors cut out each associated resource.
3. Using sharp scissors or a fine X-acto knife, cut out the ‘window’ highlighted in
the center of the background image. Be sure to leave the frame.
4. Using a needle, nail, or hole puncher, puncture a hole in the center of the
rotating wheel. Also puncture a hole beneath the open ‘window’ in the center
of the background image.
5. Attach the rotating wheel using a brass fastener.
6. As you spin the wheel, read the associated poem verse by verse.

The Dandelion
By Franziska Shelton

In May, I met a girl so fair

Her bonnet green and white her hair
She wore a jagged emerald cloak
and whispered softly as she spoke.

In June, a maiden greeted me

Who was a darling sight to see.
She waited there beside the lane
Her hair a supple golden mane.

In July, I found a modish dame,

Her hair now silver as I came.
She smiled at me with gentle eyes
And pointed at the cloudy skies.

When with a ‘whoosh’ a breeze came down

to blow away her silver crown.
The dame then laughed and so did I
And next we parted with a sigh.

Mushroom Ornaments
SALTDOUGH ORNAMENT TUTORIAL

These mushroom ornaments make beautiful gifts for the special people in your life or can be used to adorn
any nature table or seasonal display. I imagine that they would go quite well with pussy willow.

7
@My_Seasonal_Treasury

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Mushrooms, such as the ones you can buy in the grocery store, are not plants, nor are they
animals. They are the fruiting bodies of organisms found in the Kingdom Fungi and are
actually quite exceptional beings. Used to distribute spores, the mushroom itself is the
reproductive organ of the fungus, with the majority of the organism hidden beneath the
Earth. This underground network of root-like structures is known as the fungus’ mycelium
and is used to digest dead and decaying matter.

WHAT YOU NEED (makes approximately 15 ornaments)

• 1 cup of all-purpose flour

• ½ cup of fine table salt
• ½ cup of warm water
• Wooden skewer
• Acrylic paints (I used a selection of 12 colors from Artist Loft)
• Medium sized brush
• Super glue (I used the Gorilla brand) or hot glue
• Small screw eyes
• Glossy Mod Podge
• Foam brush applicator

DISCLAIMER: Working with super glue is not appropriate for children. Super glue is a very
strong adhesive that can cause skin injury as well as damage to furniture and clothing. If you
are doing this project with children, opt for hot glue instead.

Total time needed to complete this project:

• Shaping the mushrooms: 30 minutes
• Baking the mushrooms: 2 hours
• Painting the mushrooms: 1 hour
• Finishing the mushrooms: 15 minutes

Fun with modeling beeswax

DIY Bee Tealights:

1. Purchase a set of beeswax tealights.

2. Use Modeling Beeswax for candle
making to cut out two black strips
per tealight as well as a little stinger.
Use your fingers to model two tiny
antennae.
3. Use white Modeling Beeswax to
shape two translucent wings. Attach
all parts to your candle(s).

‘Bee Mine’ Valentines:

1. Use a hexagonal template to cut

out honeycomb shaped cards
from recycled paper.
2. Use a small square of bubble
wrap and yellow watercolor to
add texture to your cards. Let dry
for a minimum of 30 minutes.
3. Use Modeling Beeswax to create
tiny round bees. Gently push the
bees atop the cards. Use a marker
to write a small note.

12
@My_Seasonal_Treasury

Easter Countdown Candle:

1. Purchase a set of beeswax dinner

candles.
2. Use Modeling Beeswax to create a
set of 6-7 colorful Easter eggs
(depending on how long you would
like this ritual to last).
3. Decorate the eggs with tiny,
handmade patterns.
4. Gently push the Easter eggs onto the
candle.
5. Light your candle each day as a way
to countdown to Easter.
DIY Easter Egg Candles:

1. Purchase a set of egg-shaped

candles.
2. Use modeling beeswax to
decorate your egg-shaped
candles for a beautiful selection
of springtime candles.
3. You can adorn your candles with
springtime flowers, general
patterns, or even animal shaped.
Let your creativity flow.

CAUTION: Never leave a candle unattended. Open flames pose a fire hazard and
should be supervised at all times. Never leave your child(ren) alone with an open
flame. It is always a safer option to opt for LED candles.

Wax Resist Snowdrops

Materials

v Watercolor Paper
v Beeswax Crayons
v Watercolors
v Various Brushes
v A shallow tub filled with warm
water

Directions

1. Use a light green beeswax crayon to draw the shape of a snowdrop on

watercolor paper. Use a white beeswax crayon to add the blossom.
2. Place your watercolor paper in a shallow tub filled with warm water.
Your paper should be saturated, but not dripping wet. You can use a
paper towel to wipe off any excess water.
3. Use wide brushes and watercolors to begin your wet-on-wet painting.
You may want to choose colors that resemble springtime.
4. This is a wonderful activity for toddlers and small children. My own
children always call wax resist art “magic painting”.

Salt dough Easter Treats

Materials (makes about 10)

• 1 cup of all-purpose flour

• ½ cup of fine table salt
• ½ cup of warm water
• 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon
• Watercolors (I used a watercolor
palette from Stockmar) and brushes
• Glossy Mod Podge

CAUTION: Never leave your oven unattended!

Directions

1. Prepare a batch of salt dough by combining 1 cup of all-purpose flour

with ½ cup of table salt and ½ cup of warm water. Add 2 tablespoons of
ground cinnamon. Knead until smooth dough forms.
2. Shape the dough into different types of pastries. You can come up with
your own designs or use my recommendations as inspiration. I made
an Easter lamb, a couple of Swedish cinnamon rolls, bunny bread, and
“yeast dough” Easter nests.
3. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Place your pastries onto
a cookie sheet lined with baking paper. Bake for 2.5 hours.
4. Set up a painting station with watercolors, brushes, and a palette.
5. Start by giving your pastries a base coat. I used a dry brush and white
paint to create an effect of powdered sugar as well as diluted browns
and yellows to create a distinct pastry look.
6. Use a fine brush to add details such as sugar crystals, or salt.
7. Finally, add “frosting” by coating your pastries in glossy Mod Podge.

Beaded Flower Fairies

Materials

• Wooden beads in various sizes

• Wool felt in various colors
• Fabric scissors
• Embroidery yarn in various
colors
• Black Sharpie
• Embroidery needle

Directions

1. For one flower fairy you will need: 1 large wooden bead (head), 2
medium wooden beads (chest), 6 small wooden beads (arms and legs),
and 3 extra small wooden beads (hands and foot).
2. Use fabric scissors to cut out wool felt circles and flower petals. The
number of circles and petals will vary based on your design.
3. You will need three individual strands of embroidery yarn for each fairy.
Cut your yarn to approximately 30 cm per strand.
4. Begin by creating the foot and chest of your fairy. Combine the three
strands of yarn by tying a basal knot. Add a tiny bead at the base and
make sure that the knot is large enough to hold the bead in place. Next,
add a layer of wool felt petals and continue to add beads until 2 small
beads as well as a medium sized bead have been added to create the
chest of the fairy.
5. You will now create the arms by adding two small beads to the
righthand strand and the lefthand strand. Finally, add an extra small
bead to each of the two strands and tie a knot to hold the hands in

16

place. Be sure to add layers of wool felt petals between each added
bead.
6. Use the middle strand to create the fairy’s head. Add a hat design atop
the head and use a black marker to draw on eyes.

Diy Rainbow Candle

Materials

• 6 reusable cup (I repurposed

yoghurt cups)
• Beeswax leftovers or pellets
• Two empty jars (one for the
water bath and one for the
candle)
• Candlewick
• Beeswax crayons in red, orange,
blue, green, and purple.

Directions

1. Set aside 6 empty, reusable jars or cups. I used empty yoghurt cups
that I have been saving for this purpose.
2. Place all of your leftover pieces of beeswax (or beeswax pellets) in a
large empty mason jar and carefully melt the wax over a water bath
(at low to medium heat).
3. Create a mess free zone. Place a piece of recycled paper or a kitchen
towel on a flat surface and place the 6 empty cups on top of the
paper. Also place a wooden skewer next to your crafting station. You
will use this to stir in the colours.
4. Set up your candle jar: place a candle wick in the centre of the jar
and hold it in place using a candle wick holder or even a vertical
toothpick.
5. Use a butter knife to collect crayon shavings from 6 different
beeswax crayons: purple, blue, green, yellow (optional), orange, red.
You will want about 1/2 teaspoon per colour.
6. Add each coloured set of shavings to an empty cup.

22
@My_Seasonal_Treasury

7. Once the beeswax has melted, pour about 1 tablespoon of melted

beeswax atop the purple shavings. Stir using the wooden skewer.
8. Carefully pour the purple wax into the base of the candle jar. Let
harden completely before proceeding to prepare the blue-coloured
wax.
9. Repeat until all 6 colours have been added. Be sure to always let
each layer harden before adding the next. It will make all the
difference.

CAUTION: Never leave a flame unattended and always supervise your

children when lighting a candle. It is always safer to opt for LED candles.
This activity should NOT be done by a child and adult supervision is
required at all times.

Root Children Silhouettes

Materials
Have your heard of the root children before?
They are a jolly folk of whimsical children living
underground and waiting for Mother Earth to
awaken them in springtime. Dreamed up by
Sibylle von Olfers in 1906, the root children are
a true Waldorf classic. Print out the following
transparencies to make a pair of snowdrop
fairies come to life on your windows.

Materials:

• Root children silhouette

• Sharp scissors
• Crafting knife, self-healing surface
• Greenery (twigs, leaves, pressed
flowers…)
• School glue

Directions
1. Print out the root children silhouettes at 100%. You may want to print the silhouettes on
cardstock to preserve them for an extended period of time. Regular printer paper works
well, too.
2. Cut out the silhouettes using sharp scissors and a crafting knife (X-acto knife). Be sure to
use a self-healing surface to prevent any accidents. Children should NOT work with an X-
acto knife. Be sure to supervise children closely when cutting out the silhouettes using
scissors.
3. Attach greenery with a glue stick.
4. Display in a well lit window.

DIY Shadow Puppets, Story & Backdrop

43
@My_Seasonal_Treasury

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The tradition of the shadow theater dates back hundreds of years to ancient China,
Indonesia (Wayang Kulit), Cambodia (Sbek Thom), and Thailand (Nang Talung). To produce
a shadow play, two-dimensional figures are commonly placed against a transparent
backdrop. Sometimes, three-dimensional figures or even actors may be responsible for
casting shadows against a light source. If the light source behind the projection surface is
point-shaped, then shadow figures will appear sharp and focused, even from a distance. If,
however, the light source is diffuse, characters will only appear sharp when displayed within
close proximity to the projection surface. Because our shadow theater will be set up against
the surface of a window, our light source will be diffuse and will require us to place our
shadow puppets against the surface of the window.
The following shadow play is a variation of the famous fairytale “Red Riding Hood” by the
brothers Grimm.

44
@My_Seasonal_Treasury

WHAT YOU NEED

• Printable shadow puppets

• Printable script
• Scissors
• Wooden skewers
• Kite paper in green, and brown
• Play silks in greens and browns
• Tape

DIRECTIONSZ

1. Print out the attached shadow puppets and cut them out using sharp scissors. Use tape
to attach a wooden skewer to the back of each puppet.
2. Print out the fairytale and read over the tale before acting out the play. This will help
make the process smoother. You can find the fairytale by Googling it (there are even
kids’ versions available).
3. Using kite paper, create a kite paper tree for your forest backdrop.
4. Use play silks and clear tape to create a window “stage” for your shadow play. You may
want to add twigs, pine tree trimmings, or greenery as additional décor.
5. Act out the play using the wooden skewers to move your characters around. Ideally, this
play requires a minimum of two “actors”.
