FURUNO ECDIS TYPE SPECIFIC FAMILIARISATION CHECKLIST

Please use the familiarization ECDIS training software for the training for FURUNO Models
FMD 3100/3200/3300. Also you may read the HELP file, FURUNO Operators Handbook
(available in pdf) or refer to the Operators manual handcopy which is kept on the table.
Please study the various TASKS PERFORMED in the CBT which will enable you to be
familiarized with all the features of the FURUNO ECDIS models mentioned above.
Please complete the this familiarization checklist as you go through the CBT.
Kindly ‘tick’ off in the right hand column, each task when successfully completed by you. Once you
have completed all the tasks, you would be satisfactorily familiarized with the ECDIS type which you
will be using onboard the next ship you will be joining.
On completion of each Section, please contact Course faculty for any difficulty or queries, as
assessment of your grasp of the functions within that section.
Once completed, please inform the Training Co-ordinator who will then inform the Course Assessor
to carry out an assessment to gauge your proficiency in the use of the FURUNO ECDIS system.

A General
1.1 Please read the Equipment Manual concerning the use of
the equipment and ensure that the procedures are correctly
followed.
1.2 Establish whether the equipment is a flag-approved ECDIS. Must be

1.3 Identify the primary ECDIS equipment and the facilities for Must be

type to that of the primary installation, then same onboard

B Basic Operation
2.1 Log In to FURUNO ECDIS Type specific training CBT for
Models FMD 3100/3200/3300
2.1 Switching the ECDIS on and off
2.2 Establish the function(s), position and general operation of
the physical controls and switches, including cursor control,
and the access and selection of menu items. Identify the
com ports for the critical equipment.
2.3 Accessing the main menu and select menu options. Identify
all control panels and task panels. Familiarize with tabs for
each task panel. Navigate between menus.
2.4 Setting day/night viewing modes, brightness, contrast and
colour correction (if available).
2.5 Setting chart orientation - North Up, Head Up or Course Up.
2.6 Selecting True or Relative Motion.
2.7 Selecting vector length.
2.8 Off-centering own ship position.
2.9 Selecting own ship symbol. Drop and return own ship
symbol
2.10 Activate Man Overboard function – interpret course-to-steer
to return.
2.12 Setting anchor watch guard ring & alarm.
2.13 Switching between traditional (paper chart) and simplified
(S-52/ ECDIS Chart 1) symbology.
2.14 Putting equipment in route-monitoring mode and route-
planning mode.
2.15 Selecting chart scales- finding the current scale of
displayed charts and setting the display to a particular
scale. (Scrolling and zooming charts)
2.16 Selecting the Base Display and Standard Display.
Changing display levels and reverting to standard display.
2.17 Determine how to add display other information from ENC
s, including the display of All Other Information.
2.18 Checking the own ship information.
2.19 Selecting the safety contour and safety depth.
2.20 Selecting two- or four-colour contour mode.
2.21 Selecting deep and shallow area display options.
2.22 Setting all other parameters concerning the safety domain.
2.23 Establish how alarms and other alerts are given by the
ECDIS and the procedure needed to acknowledge them.
The status indicators/ alarms include, but are not limited to:
Exceeding off track limits
Crossing safety contour
ECDIS malfunctions
Information overscale
Larger ENC available
Positioning system failure
Arrival waypoint alarms
Dangerous alarm
Off course alarm.

Dragging anchor alarm.


2.24 Changing alarm settings.
2.25 Set up volume of buzzer.
2.26 Determine and understand the position-fix systems that
feed the ECDIS. Determine the method of switching
between sources, such as primary and secondary position
fix systems.
2.27 Determine what other systems feed into the ECDIS, such
as radar (tracked targets and/or raw), AIS, water speed
logs, echo sounders, etc.
2.28 Recognize Consistent Common Reference Point (CCRP)
for the vessel.
2.29 Input the event mark.
2.30 Recognize trouble shooting routines in ECDIS.
2.31 Meet Faculty for assessment and clearing of doubts.

C Charts
3.1 Determine where Base and Update CDs are stored on the ship.
3.2 Accessing the chart directory and to identify whether charts
are ENCs, RNCs or private data.
3.3 Installing/ updating Admiralty Digital Catalogue and order
ENC’s.
3.4 Uploading vector or ARCS charts into the system.
3.5 Selecting a chart for display on the screen by number or
area.
3.6 Loading new chart licence keys/ permits.
3.7 Loading base data.
3.8 Checking the update status of loaded charts.
3.10 Updating charts using the normal cumulative update
procedures. (If applicable, determine how to apply non-
cumulative or electronically-transmitted updates).
3.11 Applying manual updates.
3.12 Accessing and printing Log of Chart Updates.
3.13 Locate charts produced by IHO ( ECDIS Chart 1, names
beginning with “AA”). Know their significance and SAME
NOT TO BE DELETED AT ANY TIME.

D Navigation Tools and Functions


4.1 Displaying the legend of general information.
4.2 Selecting information about an object (Pick report).
4.3 Displaying Zone of Confidence (CATZOC) information.
4.5 Accessing Marine Information Overlays (MIO) available.
4.6 Determine the ‘single operator action’ needed to remove
MIOs from the display.
4.7 Determine the ‘single operator action’ needed to set the
Standard Display setting.
4.9 Accessing all navigational elements and parameters, such
as past track, vectors, position lines, etc.
4.10 Using ERBL and VRM.

E Route Planning
5.1 Loading existing routes and editing same.
5.2 Initiating a new route plan.
5.3 Initiating and planning alternate routes.
5.4 Saving route plans including alternate routes.
5.5 Adding, deleting, copying, editing and adjusting graphically
the position of waypoints.
5.6 Inserting navigational warnings, T& P Corrections and other
relevant notes.
5.7 Marking NO GO areas & other information.
5.8 Carrying out a route safety check and verifying results.
5.9 Loading the planned route and alternatives into the back-up
system.
5.10 Reversing a planned route.
5.12 View and copy route plan as Excel table from route
planning.
5.13 Meet Faculty for assessment and clearing of doubts.

F Route Monitoring
6.1 Loading a pre-planned route.
6.2 Selecting the primary or an alternate route and how to
distinguish between them on the display.
6.3 Determine the single operator action that selects the
charted display of own ship’s position.
6.4 Displaying route information while monitoring.
6.5 If radar or AIS targets can be displayed on the ECDIS,
determine what target vector modes are available and how
to switch between and differentiate them.
6.6 Displaying ARPA/ Radar and AIS MIOs, if available.
6.7 Activating & deactivating AIS targets.
6.8 Displaying AIS information for selected targets.
6.9 AIS target symbols - especially dangerous targets.
6.10 Displaying past position / history.
6.11 Creating time labels along the ship’s track.
6.12 Editing a route being monitored.
6.13 Understand Radii of turn and wheel over line.
6.14 Adjusting ship's position manually to match radar image on
ECDIS display.
6.15 Inputting the LOP to form the reference for an estimated
position.
6.17 Configuring the ECDIS to find subsequent EPs.
