INTRODUCTION

I, Mohd Zaid Usmani, student of Center for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, Jamia Millia
Islamia, batch 2019- 2023 joined my six month compulsory internship program on 19th september
2023 and successfully completed it on 18th September 2024 from Hindu Rao Hospital, Malka ganj ,
NewDelhi-110007.
With over 1000+ beds, Hindu Rao Hospital is one of the oldest hospital of Delhi. Over the years,
it has progressed, bringing in the latest and the most modern medical care in critical and
life-threatening area like Cardiac, Othropaedics, Nephrology, and Neuro Surgery.

For 1 month to gain knowledge and specialist exposure in the field of pulmonary rehab, I was
posted in the Rajan Babu Institute of pulmonary medicine and tuberculosis (RBIPMT) for 1
month from 1-29th February 2024. Rajan babu hospital situated in GTB nagar, is Asia’s largest
hospital for TB. It is one of the oldest, rooting its foundation during British India. It consists of
multiple other specialities, pulmonary being the main, it consists of more than 1200+ beds.

Today the hospital offers tertiary-level care in 42 specialities and has assembled the finest medical
talent – Physicians, Surgeons, Nursing Professionals and Technicians.

The Physiotherapy department is located in Basement and First floor in Dharam shala complex. The
department is equipped with facilities including Exercise Room and Electro Room and functional
therapy room which has functional modalities like shoulder wheel, shoulder ladder, manual cycle
ergometer, hand exercisers, dumbles, weight cuffs, balancing boards, parallel bar and gym balls.

The modalities in the OPD include modalities like Short Wave Diathermy, Spinal traction table with
Tilt table, CPM, Ultrasound, Muscle stimulation machine.

The physiotherapy staff in the department is highly experienced professionals with thorough
knowledge and skills in treating patients. The department is successfully dealing with patients
from neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, cardiology, psychiatry, gastroenterology
departments.
Acknowledgement

I would like to thank almighty for blessing me with the opportunity, zest, passion and
ability to work as a medical professional for six months in a well-known reputed
hospital.

I extend my gratitude to Dr Dharamveer (HOD), Dr Dawar (PT) , Dr. Astha(PT) for


supervising me and guiding me throughout the span of internship. They helped me to
enhance and improve my skills and knowledge.

I would like to thank CPRS, Jamia Millia Islamia and all beloved professors for
inculcating in me the best of morals and values.

Last but not the least I would like to thank my family and friends for always being
there for me at my highest and lowest as my pillar of strength and motivator
throughout my internship period.

OPD exposure during 6months

I was posted in physiotherapy OPD for 1 month during myinternship program. I


thoroughly learned about:

​ Physical evaluation and assessment

​ Planning and treating patients

​ OPD management and record keeping

​ Manualtherapy

​ Operating various electrotherapeutic modalities.

​ Counseling and patient handling.


IPD Exposure during 6 months

Hindu Rao Hospital has wide range of ICUs, wards, nursing homes and in patient
department in which patients are admitted as per the pathology and severity of disease
condition. Extending further I also took a deep understanding in the field of pulmonary
rehabilitation and pulmonary medicine in the rajan babu hospital (RBIPMT) which
specializes in lung related disorders and one of the Asia’s largest hospital of Tuberculosis.

Several areas were explored during IPD postings in various departments:

​ Critical patient handling

​ Rehabilitation

​ Acute management of several cases

​ Working as a part of multidisciplinary team

​ Discharge planning

​ Counselling and motivation

​ Preoperative and postoperative case management

​ Patient’s psychology
ICU CARE

The ICUs are totally isolated and equipped with modern and highly
sophisticated monitoring devices and equipment. Whole of the hospital follow
the infection control policy but extra care is taken forinfection control in the
ICUs. The intensive care unit cater to patients with severe and life-threatening
illnesses and injuries which require constant monitoring and support from
specializedequipment in orderensure normal bodily functions.
The vitals that are constantly monitored f or ICU care include Heart rate, respiratory
rate, blood pressure, ECG, oxygen saturation, urine out flow, temperature and ABG.
The following is the list of ICUs in which I was posted:

● Neurosurgery ICU: This unit provides care to pre or postoperative critically


ill patients who require surgical intervention and requires constant monitoring.
Commoncasesseen during this posting include Subarachnoid hemorrhage,
stroke, gliomas, VP shunt malfunction, sphenoid wing meningioma, FTP
cranioplasty, bifrontal SOL, CVJ anomaly with AAD kyphoplasty C3-C5 with
subaxial cervical kyphoscoliosis, BG bleed, meningoencephalitis.

● Neurology ICU: This unit provides acute and critical care to adultsand geriatric
population having deranged vitals. Common cases seen include BG bleed, stroke,
supranuclear palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease, GBS.

● Medicine ICU : In this unit common cases that are seen include CAD with
HTN, CABG , IWMIwithstroke.

● General ICU: In this unit common cases that are seen includes
appendictectomy, hernia repairs, ileostomy, cholecyctectomy, hysterectomy,
ileostomy, colostomy, koch’s abdomen.

● SNCU, NICU: In this unit common cases are Cerebral palsy, encephalitis
pneumonia, Seizures.

● Pulmonary Rehab:
During our postings in the RBIPMT hospital, we observed and assessed multiple cases and
disorders of lungs and leared about the case presentation, sign and symptoms of the
disorders. With it we also improved our approach in performing multiple airway clearance
techniques like ACBT, postural drainage and other breathing techniques.
Overall experience: My overall experience during six months at Hindu Rao
Hospital was very productive. There are several skills I gained from my
internship experience:

● Medical ethics

● Medico legal case management

● Patient dealing

● Patient Counselling and motivation

● Patient psychology

● Critical patient dealing in ICUs.

● Physiotherapeutic evaluation and intervention

● Disability assessment and certification

● Time and schedule management according to number of patients.

It was a great journey for my personal growth and experience I gained in


terms of exposure with special emphasis on Neurological, neurosurgical,
cardiology and gastroenterology cases. I experienced empathy to the patients
of various diseases with different severity. By concluding this, it was a
wonderful life time experience for my career ahead to be a part of such
reputed hospital.
