Q1. Define the following: -

1. Scale: A scale is the ratio between the distance on a map and the
actual distance on the ground.

2. Sketch: A rough drawing of a place drawn without a scale or


conventional symbols.

3. Plan: A plan is a detailed drawing of a small area drawn on a very


large scale.

Q2. How are maps useful to us?


Ans: Maps are useful to students and common people in the following
ways:
1. They are easy to handle and can be carried everywhere.
2. Many provide a lot of information to planners, sailors, pilots, drivers,
miners, etc.
3. Even the strategies of an army depend on information provide in
maps.
Q3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a Map?
Ans: Advantages: -
1. A map is a representation of the Earth as a whole, or a part of the
Earth drawn on a flat surface.
2. It can show continents, countries, cities and even a local area with all
the details.
3. It is easy to handle and to carry as it can be rolled or folded.
Disadvantages:
1. A flat map cannot accurately show the curved surface of the Earth.
2. When a map is drawn, the shapes and sizes of the continents and
oceans get distorted.
Q4. What are cardinal directions and intermediate directions?
Ans: 1.There are four cardinal directions – north, south, east and west.
2. The directions in between the cardinal directions are the intermediate
directions.
3. They are northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest.
Q5. Distinguish between a small-scale map and a large-scale map?
Ans:

Ans: Maps are of various types, providing different kinds of information.

2. Physical maps: show the landforms and water bodies on the Earth’s
surface, such as mountains, plateaus, plains, etc.
3. Topographical maps or contour maps: show great details of both
natural and man-made features of a small area, with the help of
conventional symbols.
4. Climatic maps: show weather conditions like temperature, pressure,
wind direction, rainfall, etc.
5. Tourist Maps: show details of places of tourist interest like hill
stations, beaches, etc.
6. Thematic maps: show the distribution of forests, crops, minerals,
industries, etc.
