Inflatable Rescue Boat SAFIN 420

Every survival craft shall have sufficient strength to:


– Be launched with a complete load of people and equipment
– Be capable of being launched and towed, in still waters, when the ship is moving forward with a speed of 5 knots.
• Shall have sufficient strength to resist side impacts against the ship’s hull with a minimum speed of 3.5 m/s and water
impacts from a height of at least 3 m.
• The capacity shall NEVER exceed 6 persons.
• The arrangement shall allow its total capacity of people to embark, in a time interval not greater than 3 minutes.
• The recovery time of a rescue boat shall not be greater than 5 minutes
• Shall have the capacity of maneuvering at speeds up to 6 knots, keeping the speed for a period of at least 4 hours.
• Shall have sufficient mobility and maneuverability at sea to:
– Allow the recovery of people in the water
– Tow life rafts and the largest lifeboat on board the ship, when totally loaded with people and equipment

Inspection During Servicing
Visual Inspection of Inflatable Boat

• Inflate the boat and check the boat for any possible damage.. Visually inspect the fabric of the boat hull and buoyancy
tubes for any damage. Mark any doubtful areas for repair with a wax pencil.
• Inspect the rubbing strake around the buoyancy tubes for signs of damage, marking any sections for repair with a wax
pencil.
• Check the mounting of the mast on the transom. Check the expiry date of the light battery and replace as necessary.
• Check the radar reflector is undamaged and fitted to the mast. Replace if necessary.
• Remove the Stowage Bag from its thwart and set aside for later inspection. Check each thwart for damage and that each is
properly marked. Replace any damaged thwarts. If the thwarts are in good condition they may be set aside until the
inspection and testing of the boat is complete.
• Remove the floor and check each component for damage. Ensure the D-rings to which the lifting sling is shackled are
properly secured to the floor. Ensure the aluminum lock strips are undamaged. Any damaged components should be
replaced.
• Check the lifting sling for any signs of fraying or damage and replace a necessary. Check the lifting sling shackles are of a
suitable size and are marked as tested.
• Bow towing patches: check for damage to the D-ring or line. Repair or replace as necessary.

• Painter release mechanism: check the operation of the painter release mechanism and then re-close it. Check the release
handgrip is properly secured in its pocket on the bow buoyancy tube.
• Grab lines and patches: check for fraying or other damage and replace as necessary.
• Carrying handles: check each for damage and replace as necessary.
• Paddle holders: check for damage, ensuring toggles and elastic cord are in good condition.
• Compass mounting: check for damage and replace as necessary.
• Boarding ladder: check for damage and ensure it is securely attached to the buoyancy tube and neatly folded into its
stowage pocket.
• Righting straps: check for damage and ensure it is securely attached to the buoyancy tube and neatly stowed into its
stowage pocket.
• Safety knives: check each knife is undamaged and properly stowed in its holder on the buoyancy tube (bow and stern).

• Rescue quoit: check the quoit is correctly stowed in its holder on the bow, with the line neatly coiled.
• Retro reflective tape: inspect the retro reflective tape strips on the buoyancy tubes and hull of the boat, replacing any tha t
are damaged.
• Check the relief valves for any obvious damage and in good condition.
• Check the inflate/deflate valves for any obvious damage and ensure the valve caps are attached and in good condition.
• Transom: check the transom for any obvious damage. Ensure the engine plate is properly secure and the identification
plate is readable and secure.
• Check the towing bridle fittings are properly secured to the transom and that the towing bridle itself is not frayed or
damaged. Replace as necessary.
• Check the transom drains are unblocked and in good condition. Ensure the drain caps are attached.
• Check the stern towing line is neatly coiled in its bag and securely attached to the towing bridle.
Inspection During servicing
INSPECTION OF EQUIPMENT
Paddles: check the paddles are undamaged and replace if necessary
Boat hook: extend the boat hook and check it is undamaged. Replace if necessary.
Compass: check the compass bowl has no air bubble in it. Ensure the compass swings freely when a metal object is moved near
it.
Stowage bag: remove the equipment from the stowage bag and examine the bag for any damage. Repair or replace as
necessary.
Torch: check the torch is functional and undamaged.
Spare batteries: replace batteries at each service.
Spare bulb: check fiction and replace if necessary.
First Aid Kit: check kit is unopened and that it has not exceeded its expiry date. If the kit is past its expiry date, it must be
replaced.
Thermal protective aids: check the TPA’s are in sealed undamaged bags. Replace if the bags have been opened or damaged.
Bailer: check for damage and replace if necessary.
Sponges: check for damage and replace if necessary.
Repair kit: check contents of repair kit and that the adhesive is not past its expiry date. Ensure the bag is dry and undamaged.
Replace as necessary.
Whistle: check function and that it is securely attached to the valise with cord.
Bellows: check functionality and replace as necessary.
Searchlight: check functionality. If standard torch batteries are fitted, these should be replaced at each service.
Inspection During servicing
Inspection of Inflatable chambers

Needs to be carried out at approved service station.


Boats to be inflated and checked for any leakage, check all chamber relief valves
Any leakage on relief valves and reset pressure .

Note: The repair if any to be carried out under controlled facility where
temperature & humidity is controlled with no direct sunlight
Servicing of Rescue Boat
Very Important
As per MSC circular 402(96)
Annual thorough examinations and operational tests and Five-year thorough examination, any
overhaul, overload operational tests, shall be conducted by certified personnel of either the
manufacturer or an authorized service provider in accordance with section 7 and section 8. of
MSC circular 402(96)

The competent person only approved to carry out life raft servicing will not be able to carry
out above said tests and inspections.
