Our Degree Apprenticeships
Degree apprenticeships are an area The University of
Sheffield has been leading amongst research-led institutions
and we are delighted to continue our commitment to genuine
access of the highest quality.
Our pioneering new degree-level apprenticeship programme will help to plug a vital engineering
skills gap in industry and provides an alternative route into higher education for existing apprentices,
employees or school and college leavers.

We offer two degree apprenticeships:

Degree Apprenticeship
Enables students to combine their studies with full time employment, to complete a
bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BEng).

Top-up Degree Apprenticeship

A 12 month programme to allow students graduating from our Foundation Degree, or a
HND in Engineering, the opportunity to achieve a bachelor’s degree in engineering (BEng).

All of our degree apprenticeships are taught at the

AMRC Training Centre and University of Sheffield
Diamond Building over a full teaching day, on a
day-release model, with further study required by
students outside the classroom.

They apply the study of engineering fundamentals

such as design, manufacturing materials, engineering
principles and applied mathematical techniques,
to the solution of real life problems encountered
across the engineering and manufacturing spectrum.

For those interested in an academic qualification only,

our Foundation Degree, Top-up Degree and Degree can
be taken as standalone qualifications. See page 11 for
more details.

5
Our degree pathways have been developed through employer and academic
collaboration to ensure that they are relevant and well structured for career
enhancement and skills development in the advanced manufacturing sector.
Students will develop critical thinking and robust analytical skills, teamwork,
communication, practical laboratory skills and technical report writing as well
as being able to apply their knowledge to current industrial challenges.

For all of our degree apprenticeships, you can choose from the following pathways:

Degree Apprenticeship
Our new Degree Apprenticeship builds on the strong base of the
existing University of Sheffield degree apprenticeships provision.

It is delivered using a blend of face to face learning - lectures, seminars and tutorials - with online
and self-paced learning and support, to enable the students to combine their studies with full
time employment. It has been designed in partnership with academic staff and employers to
ensure students can graduate equipped to meet the current and future needs of the advanced
manufacturing sector.

The Degree Apprenticeship is delivered in two phases:

In the first 2 years of the apprenticeship the apprentices will complete the foundation phase,
where they will study for a foundation degree. The foundation phase is delivered at the AMRC
Training Centre and the University of Sheffield’s Diamond building. They will complete some
modules which are common across the 3 pathways and also modules which are specific to
their chosen pathway.

Degree Apprenticeship Pathways

Manufacturing Technology
Maintenance Engineering

Following successful completion of the foundation phase, the apprentices will begin year 3,
the development phase, which focuses on applying the skills gained throughout the foundation
phase to the working environment over a 12 month study year. The study year relates to the
apprentices specific chosen pathway and on successful completion of this year, the apprentice
will be awarded with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BEng).

Entry requirements for the Degree Apprenticeship are:

What our employers say...
We find our degree apprentices bring the flexibility that traditional
graduates don’t. We nurture their development throughout the three
or four years of their training which gives us exactly the skills we
need for our business in the future.
Peter Fleming
Engineering Manager, Atkins Global

If I was 16 years old and I was given a hundred choices for careers,
I would choose here every time. You cannot ask for a better
environment for tomorrow’s engineers to create the complex,
customer-oriented values and solutions for industry, the economy
and for the UK than this environment. In years ahead, long after
people like me have retired, I think when people look back at the
AMRC and say ‘What has the AMRC done?’, apart from all the
technologies and infrastructure change, I think people will
remember the AMRC for creating world-class engineers.

Reasons to employ an apprentice
The apprenticeship frameworks are changing and new trailblazer
standards are being developed. The AMRC Training Centre is at
the forefront of these changes and, in fact, is contributing to the
development of these new apprenticeship standards.
The Training Centre has been working hand in hand with employers to develop higher education
apprenticeship programmes, including degree apprenticeships that meet employer needs and
provide opportunities for their workforce, either new apprentices or to upskill existing staff.

We know that the apprenticeship route offers significant benefits:
